My brother said they were told early, doesn’t make sense?

This is an interesting read about the media process/timeline.

www.gq-magazine.co.uk/politics/article/british-newsrooms-queen-elizabeth-ii-death

Very interesting. Highlights what many have said, that everyone knew it was imminent and that there would be no happy outcome that afternoon.

boysarethebest · 11/09/2022 06:15

Fgs, it's obvious that some people were told in advance. Not sure why posters are so sceptical whenever anyone says this. You do not know they are lying and it just comes across as sour grapes that someone might have found out before the rest of us. It's pathetic.

Who said no one knew in advance?

Zonder · 11/09/2022 06:38

Nobody is questioning that some people were told in advance. It's who, and when in advance that people are questioning. It's pretty clear now that from lunchtime pretty much everyone knew it was imminent but it seems nobody was actually told until after 4pm.

Except for the family, friends and neighbours of certain MN'ers who were told last Friday!

@Erictheavocado

My belief is that if there had been any chance of the London based family getting there in time to see her, they would have left immediately - it's not as though they have to ask to leave work or sort out emergency childcare - and would have had a helicopter waiting for them at Aberdeen airport. The fact that they left London so late and then drove to Balmoral, suggests to me they already knew they were too late.

Not sure as to the reasons for the timings but as I understand it the poor weather at the time in that part of the world precluded the use of a helicopter transfer (from the looks of the TV it certainly didn't look great at Balmoral Thursday afternoon.).

Fair enough. I know that normally they drive from Aberdeen to the estate, but was surprised they didn't use a helicopter given that one was sent to transport Charles there from Dumfries House in the morning.

Of course people were told before 4, the government, the media, the public services that would need to be involved with organisation of logistics.

The 'formal' notification to those same people will have come slightly later in the afternoon.

Seems to wind people up no end.

MissMarpleRocks · 11/09/2022 15:23

From what I’ve heard most officials knew by around 3.15. I knew about 3,30 but didn’t pay heed till the official announcement.

In any event it was fairly obvious from the demeanour change of the television presenters & comments.

This thread is bonkers! All these important folk that people claim to know! The ex husband who heads up education (? - a woman is in this job), the senior figures in the home office and in universities!

All these people jumping to boast about how well connected they are. I suppose we all need to believe we are special and a cut above everyone else.

fascinating

@Stripedbag101 that poster I think referred to the ex as 'a Head of Education', not THE Head of Education.

EntertainingandFactual · 11/09/2022 20:44

What does Angela Rayner say after she has read the note? (From 0.30) It looks like ‘Just a warning?’ Or ‘…this morning?’

Magnanimouse · 11/09/2022 21:08

To be fair, it does look like "It's just a warning?". Could also be something about "mourning" though. Still haven't worked out what time this was?

Emmelina · 11/09/2022 21:15

I think it was something something “this morning” from her face after, a sort of ‘that’s so sad’ face.

EntertainingandFactual · 11/09/2022 21:21

Yes, her expression after she said it was a bit ‘Oh no…’
I think they were told she had gone.

Here is a timeline. I think it was around midday in Parliament.

Magnanimouse · 11/09/2022 21:38

Ok, I think I'm probably wrong then. I can't see that they would outright lie though in the 12.32 statement.

Emmelina · 11/09/2022 22:57

It may not have been an outright “she died this morning”, but perhaps a “had a stroke (or other medical incident) this morning”. The tone was definitely set, though!

For a time, she will be gone without our knowing it. The information will travel like the compressional wave ahead of an earthquake, detectable only by special equipment. Governors general, ambassadors and prime ministers will learn first. Cupboards will be opened in search of black armbands, three-and-a-quarter inches wide, to be worn on the left arm.

The information was out in the public domain from around 14.30
Out of respect MM waited until officially announced.

Jaxhog · 12/09/2022 17:52

Why does it matter?

What’s MM?

Considering the BBC had already been on rolling news for around 2 hours by that point, it was hardly rocket science for anyone to guess.

PizzaFunghi · 12/09/2022 21:15

mainstream media

I think there's a difference between who "knew" - as in was pretty certain from all the signs and hints - and who had officially been told early, as in for definite, a proper official annoucement of the death.

Most people were pretty sure when the lunchtime annoucement came that it was imminent, and were fairly certain by late afternoon that it had likely happened, but still had to wait for the formal confirmation. In some ways, you can say they "knew" earlier, because of the black ties, because leave was cancelled, because of this or the other. but I think very few had an actual formal confirmation.

Thatladdo · 12/09/2022 21:29

A vile minor "royal" made a video and blabbed it moments after she was informed. Probably still on youtube, twitter I think also, thankfully it didnt gain traction

jennakong · 12/09/2022 21:41

According to the papers yesterday (sun), Liz Truss was told that the Queen was unwell quite early on Thursday, before she'd even got to the HOC that day, then told on the front bench at lunchtime that the Queen was 'gravely ill - the content of the note that caused so much visible alarm.

William, Eddie et al hadn't even left for Scotland at half past two. Their flight was delayed. Even if she did die early afternoon, I can't see that even the PM would have been formally advised of the Queen's death while the plane carrying her next of kin was still in the air heading to her deathbed, never mind the mass media, universities, the entire civil service and the Mumsnet social circle.

🤷‍♀️ never mind

Lady Colin Campbell released a video on youtube an hour and a half before(4pm) the news was officialy released saying she died of bone cancer and it was "relatively painless" , as far as i can see she deleted this now. rightly so.
