Hi there I’m 32 weeks and 4 days and had a scan today as I was measuring big and having a Homebirth.. the sonographer said my amniotic fluid should be 8cm and mine is 8.5cm slightly over .. I see the word polyhrdromnios on my notes snd now I’m worried sick anyone else had this 🥲

Hello I had this. Please don’t panic. It can be linked to gestational diabetes - have you been tested for that?

I also measured big throughout pregnancy. They will probably want to give you a couple extra scans to monitor it. I ended up giving birth at 37 weeks as I think I went pop - there was so much water that came out 😆

I had severe polyhydraminios in my last pregnancy. They'll do a GTT to check for diabetes and if fluid really high you'll be referred to foetal medicine and have a detailed scan of baby to check if they have any conditions which might cause it. You'll have a few blood tests to check for certain infections. I had diabetes but all other checks came back ok. In severe cases they do an amniocentesis to drain off excess fluid. I almost had this but I was 5 days away from c section so we left it but I was breathless. Obstetrician recommended c section because of fluid level. It was great for me but the obstetrician said they used forceps in section due to amount of fluid. Baby and I were fine and I felt like I could breath again! Just one of those things!

What have you read that makes you think it's dangerous? It's a blood test after fasting for 10 hours or so and then having a glucose drink and a rest for a couple of hours and then another blood test.

Eastendgirl1234 · 08/09/2022 20:11

Not the glucose test having polyhrdromnios and gestational diabetes as can cause complications

I had both. It was fine although a bit worrying & upsetting to find out (diabetes diagnosed earlier, polyh much later on, during one of the scans due to the diabetes). Was not allowed a sweep!
but other than rather a lot of water coming out when the time came, it was fine, normal birth, healthy baby.

Purplepjs · 08/09/2022 20:24

Hi. I had polyhydramnios. I had a normal birth at 39+5. After birth they asked us not to feed little one for an hour so that a nurse could just pop a tube into her tummy for a second from her mouth to check all was well as, very rarely, it can be a sign that mouth to tummy isn’t routed correctly. The nurse was so gentle and skilled, my daughter barely noticed and then was immediately able to come and feed. She was and is perfectly healthy. Her birth was great and all was fine.
I was worried, but the doctors and midwives involved in my care never seemed to be. Please ask your midwife any and all questions you have so you feel like you understand as best you can, and I hope you are reassured by the positive stories on here.

Purplepjs · 08/09/2022 20:25

Also, a really hilarious amount of water came flooding out during birth… we all squealed!!

Youweremybrotheranakin · 08/09/2022 20:33

My babe was absolutely fine. I had extra scans to monitor the amount of fluid and check on babe. The amount of fluid fluctuated over the weeks.

Oh if your waters break naturally I was recommended to go straight to hospital to get checked out as I think the pressure of all that water releasing can cause cord prolapse (when the cord gets flushed through ahead of babes head).

thinking if you. I’m sure all will work out perfectly x

prisscalledwanda · 08/09/2022 20:45

I had it. Had an induction because they were worried about cord prolapse which the doctor has since told me was probably over-cautious. Baby born vaginally and very healthy, no problems at all. I was really scared when they diagnosed it too but please try not to worry, it isn't rare and it doesn't mean anything will harm your baby. Apart from comedically large amounts of fluid when my waters broke nothing was different about my labour. But I do know it's an upsetting curve ball late on when you are at your most delicate and emotional, look after yourself xx

I had polyhydramnios. Had extra tests and scans which found nothing, no diabetes. Baby and I are totally fine. Just got the surgeons feet wet during my section 😳Fingers crossed for you

Eek3under3 · 08/09/2022 21:11

I’ve had severe poly twice. Deepest pool up to 20cm. Yours is only slightly over normal so I wouldn’t panic. Very often it causes no problems and is just one of those things. Sometimes caused by GD, and your dr should also check the baby’s stomach bubble is visible.

I had polyhydramnios with dc2.
Lots of very concerned warnings that if my waters broke when out and about I had to get down on all fours with my bum in the air and get someone to call an ambulance 😳

They broke at home and it was quite frankly the most comical amount of fluid that left my body. Didn't realise that the waters regenerate too, so I was basically a living, breathing niagra falls for 36 hours!

😂😂 and was there anything wiring that caused the polyhrdromnios?

Sorry what was wrong that caused the polyhrdromnios

Hi lovely I had poly, both my children have a genetic condition but my DD has an additional factor causing disabilities and my DS is absolutely fine. Poly can sometimes be linked to genetic issues but mostly it really is just something that can happen. Sometimes it can be caused by gestational diabetes but I was clear both times. One midwife said to me that bigger babies produce more urine hence more fluid, both my babies were good weights! (9lb 6oz and 8lb 13oz)

The polyhydramnios private Facebook group is also very helpful Smile

With my daughter my fluid levels kept rising but with my son they rose for a bit but gradually came back down on their own as the pregnancy progressed. I was still classed as having poly but I was only a little over the norm. As I said my DS is thriving and no issues at all.

zeromango · 08/09/2022 21:40

Forgot to add when my DS was born they checked his swallow by placing an NG tube down his nose (very quick and painless) and all was fine. Sometimes there's a problem with babies swallow which causes a lack of urine output but this is something that can usually be detected on the scans anyway. I remember googling as well and unfortunately you're a mum now so you won't stop worrying even when they're here Wink. Best of luck!

GroggyLegs · 08/09/2022 21:40

I don't think there is a cause, it just happens sometimes.

I had it. No GD. Baby was fine.
Didn't happen with my second baby, he was a much smaller bump!

My waters went in a Costa coffee and it was HORRENDOUS.

Skiphopbump · 08/09/2022 21:43

I had it with my third. My GTT was normal and no cause was found. DSs delivery was fine there was just a lot of water - the midwife broke my waters and got splashed by the force it was running down the sides of the bed!

Eastendgirl1234 · 08/09/2022 21:43

Hi thanks for the reply.. so both children have a disability? Snd was there any complications during birth?

OP posts:
Eastendgirl1234 · 08/09/2022 21:45

When you have the GTT test do you get the results that same day ?
