Hi there I’m 32 weeks and 4 days and had a scan today as I was measuring big and having a Homebirth.. the sonographer said my amniotic fluid should be 8cm and mine is 8.5cm slightly over .. I see the word polyhrdromnios on my notes snd now I’m worried sick anyone else had this 🥲

Yes I had polyhydraminos, I had the GTT test and was clear. I had a normal vaginal delivery with no complications but when my waters went (in the hallway at home in front of my teenage son and a group of friends) it was spectacular. Once she was born they discovered there was a double membrane around her so she was in a sack of water inside a sack of water and they decided that was the most likely cause of the polyhydraminos

She's fine she has autism but so does my son and no polyhydraminos there. Try not to worry.

I was told I had slightly high fluid at 36 weeks, went back at 39 and it was normal again.
felt like a lot of fluid came out of me when my waters went! But otherwise had a normal birth no issues. Gestational diabetes test negative too.

ninnynonny · 08/09/2022 22:12

I had this with my third dc (now 17!) I remember being really scared too but they will monitor you very carefully and if there are any real concerns they will make sure everything is OK. It is scary but it may well settle (as mine did) Try not to worry too much

2 with poly - no problems - all for and healthy. We didn’t know until waters broken even though I queried it, had multiple scans and was showing so many signs I am not sure how it was missed. Baby was fine though and healthy! Youngest daughter I remember in my section everyone commenting on excessive waters..I must have had it then too but it was never noted. Both big babies. No GTT but I’ve read some stuff on insulin resistance and polyhydramnios (amongst other things). My friend had it too and her son is a fit and healthy 7 year old now x

ninnynonny · 08/09/2022 22:14

And a natural delivery - despite the awkward so and so being three weeks late!

kikisparks · 08/09/2022 22:15

I had it very slightly over normal, I don’t know why, I didn’t have gestational diabetes and baby was born completely healthy.

So what caused all your extra fluid please

I don't know. They couldn't find anything at all. I never had an explanation and when baby was born, there were no problems at all and he's 3.5 years now.

Hi lovely I had poly, both my children have a genetic condition but my DD has an additional factor causing disabilities and my DS is absolutely fine. Poly can sometimes be linked to genetic issues but mostly it really is just something that can happen. Sometimes it can be caused by gestational diabetes but I was clear both times. One midwife said to me that bigger babies produce more urine hence more fluid, both my babies were good weights! (9lb 6oz and 8lb 13oz)

The polyhydramnios private Facebook group is also very helpful Smile

With my daughter my fluid levels kept rising but with my son they rose for a bit but gradually came back down on their own as the pregnancy progressed. I was still classed as having poly but I was only a little over the norm. As I said my DS is thriving and no issues at all.

That's interesting about the big babies and peeing more. I hadn't linked it but mine is a big boy, drinks tons and has to wear double nappies to bed or he pees through. Nothing wrong with him, just drinks quite a bit!

zeromango · 09/09/2022 09:06

@Eastendgirl1234 no just one child has a disability, poly can be a marker for genetic conditions but not always, and often genetic conditions don't cause any issues at all. My son was only tested due to his sister, he has the same genetic condition as both his sister and his dad (but my son and his dad are unaffected), and it's another condition causing my daughters disabilities. Both C-sections and births were fine, no problems at all and carried both full term Smile

I had polyhydramnios with my second, my gestational diabetes test was normal. The excess fluid seemed to disappear over the remaining 10 weeks of my pregnancy though. He was born, 10 days late, perfectly healthy and is now 27, with a good degree, a masters and an excellent job, if that is reassuring?!

Amazing.. so there's a chance the fluid can go down? I'm 32 weeks 5 days

I had a mild polyhydramnios number at my 36 week scan, along with a large abdominal circumference, so I had a fasting glucose test the next day. That came back as very nearly too low (so no diabetes). I had a short consultant appointment who didn't see an issue with continuing home birth plans since baby was firmly head down and low. She was a bit concerned about risk of pph from both polyhydramnios and large estimated size and recommended managed third stage as well as approving stretch and sweeps from 39 weeks. Despite the stretch and sweeps, she didn't appear until 41+2 (two days ago) a few hours after a particularly brutal s+s. Perfectly normal (quick) home birth, decided to wait and see about active placental management and it turned out not to be needed. Baby is fine so far, but was 9lb 11, so on the big side, whether that's related or not.

rainydaysandcake · 09/09/2022 12:18

I had this and no other complications. They broke my water and there was a lot of it !

I had weekly scans towards the end of the pregnancy which was reassuring.
