Aldi or Lidl?

I usually do an online shop with sainsbury, but with the price increases,am thinking about switching to shopping in aldi or lidl. Which do you prefer for a full shop, and why?

I used to say Lidl as their bakery was brill. But recently they haven't had as much choice. So we've been going to Aldi

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 10:36

I will add that neither are in a convenient location for me so that doesnt really factor in.

I go to Aldi mainly as it's closer, but would happily go to either.
There are a couple of products I need to buy in other supermarkets so now and again I go elsewhere and stock up on products I don't like or can't get in Aldi (I don't like their brand of pasta for example). In general I do one shop elsewhere for 2 shops in Aldi.
Certainly saves me money shopping in Aldi.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 04/09/2022 10:43

Swapped to Adli over Asda and cut bill by a third.

AnnaMagnani · 04/09/2022 10:43

I go to Lidl as it's nearest me. It's rare I can do a whole shop so we end up going to Waitrose for odds and ends afterwards.

However if I have to do a whole shop elsewhere I annoy DH by announcing 'How much?!' every time I pick up an item, and getting irritated because the checkouts are slow.

Lidl have a loyalty card which has some decent offers and you can get money off shopping when you spend a certain amount

Surelyitscoffeetime · 04/09/2022 10:54

It depends really. We favour Lidl for branded items, bakery and fruit/veg. Aldi is great for cleaning products.

If I had to choose to only use one, it would be Lidl.

ChangedToday · 04/09/2022 10:58

I still mostly shop a Lidl and like the loyalty card but stock availability is quite patchy so I do also use Aldi which is just as convenient. Used to prefer Lidl products across the board, but some products have recently changed for the worse so I'm buying them elsewhere now.

Freddiefan · 04/09/2022 10:58

We shopped at Aldi last time and found it to be cheaper than Asda and they weren't trying to force us to do scan & go. Aldi put extra cashiers on. I supposed if I want to carry on shopping at Asda, I will have to give in but I don't really want to. The queues at Asda tills are so bad, last time we shopped there I went and put the frozen food back in the freezers.

The honey yoghurt at Aldi was very good and reasonably priced and I enjoy the bargains in the middle of the shop.

comfortablyfrumpy · 04/09/2022 11:04

I used to be a Lidl diehard but my local one seems to have stock issues, so now it's Aldi.

I do use my local butcher for meat, abd I get a local veg box but Aldi for everything else.

The only issue is it is impossible to come home without at least one random purchase from the middle.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 04/09/2022 11:08

Lidl & Aldi are equidistant to us, but we prefer Lidl; it tends to be the one that’s least used so I can whizz in & out!

Heatherbell1978 · 04/09/2022 11:08

For me it's a real mix of both (lucky to have both close by) but if I had to choose then Aldi, I can usually get more of what I'm going for. But Lidl's card is very good. I converted around a year ago and can get a family of 4 shop for around 30-40% less than I'd pay at the likes of Sainsburys. Partly due to things being cheaper but the fact they just have one of everything means less new foodie things to be tempted by that I don't need.

LaTangerina · 04/09/2022 11:09

I found the meat etc more expensive from lidl for some reason. I do like lidl though otherwise & they always do a fantastic Christmas range so will be back for that, but otherwise we shop at Aldi. There is the odd thing we have to buy from a regular supermarket weekly like coffee pods and tea.

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 11:10

I suppose I should try both, I really, really love the convenience of a delivery, its about 6 miles to lidl and 7 to aldi, through town so a real pita. I'm writing a list.

Life's loyalty scheme has just stopped the £20 voucher when you spend £200 per month so we're using Aldi and Lidl now. Aldi seems to be better stocked but I like the Lidl 'international' weeks.

Rapidtango · 04/09/2022 11:11

Lidl's loyalty scheme FFS.

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 11:11

I can pop to sainsbury in my lunch hour for top ups.

Rapidtango · 04/09/2022 11:12

And it was a £10 voucher not £20, but still worth having even if you couldn't spend it on wine.

youagainomg · 04/09/2022 11:13

Aldi has more choice but Lidl is closer for me as can pop in and out. I wish they did delivery as that's the only reason why I shop at Asda still.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 04/09/2022 11:14

I’m finding aldi creeping up in price weekly now. Not much difference between aldi and when we’ve had delivery from Asda.

EspeciallyDivided · 04/09/2022 11:15

Lidl’s card is about to change according to Martin Lewis, not sure what difference it’ll make.

I like them for different things, I like that Lidl have self service checkouts for when you are doing a small shop. I prefer Aldi for cleaning stuff but do prefer some foods from Lidl. There is still stuff that is just not the same quality as the other supermarkets though, I bought some Lidl pickled onions recently and they were really watery, no vinegar flavour at all. In general I’d day they are great for basics (unprocessed or less processed) eg cooked meat, cheese, veg, fruit (check carefully), meat, fish, flour, sugar, coffee etc but the more processed stuff doesn’t tend to be as good.

JamMakingWannaBe · 04/09/2022 11:15

Iceland offer delivery. Our store has a range of fresh and ambient products as well as freezer food.

PuppyMonkey · 04/09/2022 11:18

I used to love love love Aldi but our local one has gone a bit downhill. I hate all the fucking fridge cupboards you have to open now and you can’t bloody find anything. Puts me off going as often as I get so stressed out. Still go though as their Unoaked Australian Chardonnay is the loveliest wine in the world.

Needmorelego · 04/09/2022 11:25

@Bemyclementine if you want lower prices and home delivery I recommend Iceland.
(It's not just frozen foods)

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 11:26

No self service in either of ours. There's a nice big lidle near my mum, but it's always packed abd the queues are sooooo slow. Puts me off every time I try and "pop" in.
