I usually do an online shop with sainsbury, but with the price increases,am thinking about switching to shopping in aldi or lidl. Which do you prefer for a full shop, and why?

We have been finding that Lidle has been creeping up in price lately and haven't saved as much. We have stopped going to lidle for the bulk of our shopping and go to asda now, also handy and time saving to get online delivery, it saves our list for next time so only afew adjustments needed and I don't forget anything! It costs us similar to get a weekly shop at Asda and we can get more of what we want from there, they have really nice meat there now; big trays of lean steak mince, lean turkey mince, extra special 90% pork sausages etc, and on deals at the moment. I still pop in to aldi/lidle but only for afew things that I prefer from there eg. Aldi choceur chocolate, aldi/lidl greek yoghurt, bread, huge tub of lidle cheese triangles for the dc, cereal, baking stuff, love lidls tinned pineapple, tinned toms, cocoa and vanilla essence especially. They also do amazing icecreams and imitation magnums that are much better than branded.

I used to love love love Aldi but our local one has gone a bit downhill. I hate all the fucking fridge cupboards you have to open now and you can’t bloody find anything. Puts me off going as often as I get so stressed out. Still go though as their Unoaked Australian Chardonnay is the loveliest wine in the world.

Yes!!! To the Chardonnay, and if you like that, try Pinot Gris. Aldi is the only place I've seen it.

PuppyMonkey · 04/09/2022 12:30

Oh yes the Pinot Gris is a good second choice when the Chardonnay is unexpectedly unavailable. Don’t like any other PG but that Aldi one is yum.

Neither. Aldi looks like a jumble sale near us and Lidl is too expensive.

Asda does me.

Oldrockingchair · 04/09/2022 13:58

are either of them really much cheaper than Tesco?? For example, I buy the cheap range in tesco so tinned toms are 28p and 500g of spaghetti is 32p. Can Aldi really be cheaper than that? We are vegetarian/vegan so meat/fish etc not an issue.

Bemyclementine · 04/09/2022 14:11

@Oldrockingchair I'm wondering this, I've just been to Aldi. Spent mire than I usually do . Need to check prices again sainsbury, but from this first shop I'm not convinced!

At the moment, it’s called Koolibura Chardonnay but it has been various other things, including Padthaway… it’s their Limestone Coast Chardonnay.

I used to buy it online in bulk but it seems to only be available in store now - I think they’ve realised I buy so much of it, it’s better for them to lure me into the store and encourage me to do my big shop there.Grin

Generally I go to Lidl because it's closer. But I go to Aldi sometimes if I need to stock up the freezer as they have a larger range of frozen food.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 04/09/2022 14:27

I prefer Lidl, wider aisles, bigger and cleaner, cheaper and not a mega rush at the checkout.

Which? says Lidl is the cheapest.

Normally a huge Lidl fan, but as others have mentioned, there seems to be stock problems lately

However, there are really great things at Lidl - the 45p fizzy water for a pack of 6 is such a bargain, and I prefer the laundry detergent at Lidl rather than Aldi.

gogohmm · 04/09/2022 14:31

Lidl because it's under 5 mins walk away. We both walk up on a weekend then I top up as required during the week. Good bakery too
