What do you think this winter will really be like?

I've done a bit too much doom scrolling tonight. Our landlord has just put our rent up by 120 pounds due to inflation and our fixed energy bill ends this month. I am starting to grow really concerned on how we are going to manage, as well as society as a whole. So many people are going to be in so much trouble I don't understand why there seems to be no plan!

What do you think this winter will really be like? The catastrophic rolling blackout, schools with 3 day weeks scenario, or do you think the government will do something to fix it. Somewhere in the middle of the two? Societal unrest?

I've never felt so uneasy living in this country before.

Please don't worry. Boris was very clear about this - it will be all right.

Meanwhile, prepare for worst and hope for best.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/09/2022 23:39

I take it you don't remember the mid sixties?

Tbf you'd have to be quite elderly to remember the mid 60's with much clarity

Confused

No I wasn't born in the 60s, and I'm not from the UK originally.

And as far as I can tell all Boris has done has advised investing in a new kettle and doubled down on how much of a mess it's all going to be.

Didn't you know with our new kettles we'll all be driving round in Ferrari's by the end of the year 🤑

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 03/09/2022 23:56

I think things will become much clearer after Monday as the new PM will likely announce plans pretty much straight away. I don’t think things will be brilliant but I do genuinely think enough will be put in place that most people will muddle through this winter and I do think support will be put in place for businesses and services/schools etc.

mibbelucieachwell · 04/09/2022 00:00

I think the government will step in to mitigate the increased cost of energy in the home.

As for help for businesses, it's hard to say.

Blackouts are possible as we have hardly any storage capacity for gas.

In the event of unrest/rioting I think Liz Truss will really clamp down hard and our government will gradually become significantly more authoritarian. It's going that way anyway, with the right to protest curtailed and journalistic freedom curtailed.

I really really hope the conservatives aren't re-elected.

FayeGovan · 04/09/2022 00:00

Christ ive got a new kettle and im still skint wtf

BarbaraofSeville · 04/09/2022 05:16

Yes I think something has to be announced in the next few days from the new PM.

There just has to be more support for households and businesses.

Households because otherwise there will be huge amounts of poverty and middle income people's disposable incomes will be wiped out and consequent knock on effect on economy.

Businesses facing double whammy of reduced demand and soaring costs. I'm seeing reports on massive utility increases especially for food businesses. Eg a small takeaway increasing from £10k pa to £60k or a larger restaurant from £60k to £420k.

There's also worries in heavy industries like steel and glass making that are facing multi million pound increases in their energy costs.

This is devastating on all scales and will cause profitable businesses to go bust without help.

But we also need to plan to use less energy even if we can afford the increases due to risk of shortages.

Boris also suggested buying a new kettle to save 10 pounds a year................

Mind-boggling!!

Zippedydoo123 · 04/09/2022 06:16

Slightly off point but I don't get all this talk of kettles. Mine is a bog standard kettle. Nothing special and a few years old. It literally costs me one pence to boil enough for one cup of tea.

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2022 06:17

I think it's going to be to be ok. Not great, but not absolutely terrible either.

I think that things will become much clearer this week with the new PM. There's pretty much been no government over the summer so they have a lot to do!

Lol
Won't be holding my breath for Truss to sort anything out. Dead in the water already imo.

Why don’t you educate us and tell us all the things Boris is doing/has done to sort out the energy pricing and cost of living crisis?

Okaaaayyy

felulageller · 04/09/2022 06:41

Truss will want the credit for 'saving' the nation but she's anti what she calls hand outs.

A VAT reduction will help everyone but other tax cuts will mostly help middle to high earners. ie not those at most risk of hypothermia/ fuel debt.

I'd suggest stocking up on candles!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/09/2022 06:44

why did a poster say mid sixties?
it was 70s with the 3 day week
shopping by candelight
power cuts.

Greycatclub · 04/09/2022 06:54

The kettle thing is a non point - I’m far from a Boris fan but it was simply an analogy when discussing the future and savings from nuclear energy. It was never advice. You need to look beyond the headlines

Tellmewhatyoureallythink · 04/09/2022 06:54

I remember the mid-sixties very clearly (though I was just a child!) We will get through this because we must. Stop listening to Boris’s nonsense, it’s not helpful. We will hear shortly what plans, if any, the incoming govt has to tackle this crisis, that’s the time to start making concrete plans. Half the problem has been that we’ve been living in a state of limbo for weeks now whilst the Tory party have been fiddling while Rome burns instead of getting on with the actual job of governing the country.
