Has anybody noticed a gradual reduction in motor traffic over recent weeks?

It goes without saying the reasons why this might be the case. I just wonder if others have noticed this? We live in a rural location, with a main road nearby which can be heard from outside, about 3 miles from a small town and close to links to dual carriageways to a small city. Out and about, and from home, there seems to be a very tangible drop off in car use. Is it the same near you?

Yes. We were commenting that it was almost down to pandemic levels. It seems to peak at weekends and especially bank holidays, but off peak daytime is really quiet.

PowerHits · 03/09/2022 17:33

No! My commute just gets busier...

FelicityRelaxington · 03/09/2022 17:34

No. Commute getting worse and worse. I thought home working had taken off! Also road works every bloody where.

Floralnomad · 03/09/2022 17:34

I’ve not noticed this , I was out and about this week and commented to my daughter about how busy it was .

mrsed1987 · 03/09/2022 17:35

Nope, it has been better coz of school holiday but as they are back on Monday its only going to get worse again

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/09/2022 17:36

Yes, but then we do usually notice this during school, holidays, especially summer holidays.

BMW6 · 03/09/2022 17:36

Not around us

DontKeepTheFaith · 03/09/2022 17:40

It’s always a bit quieter in the school holidays, Monday is going to be shit again! It’s worsened this week for sure, it will be back to normal chaos on Monday😫

KassandraOfSparta · 03/09/2022 17:41

Absolutely not in Glasgow. Busier than ever.

Qik · 03/09/2022 17:44

Commute times do not seem any different. Then it suddenly drops off in the evening before 7pm. Then this morning - a Saturday - a significant reduction compared to 'normal' whatever that is. Maybe it is the new normal. The acid test will be tomorrow I think. This is the busiest day on the A road that links our local town to the next slightly larger one. In the past I put the volume to people visiting friends for Sunday lunch, going to Cineworld, bowling, relaxed shopping etc. If it is quiet for the next three Sundays it will be quite telling.

Sorry for all those stuck in poor commutes. It is not great is it that everybody converges on the roads around the same time.

No, our roads are hideously busy

quiteathome · 03/09/2022 17:50

No, probably a bit quieter at certain times due to holidays. However what I have noticed is that people seem to drive as if they have a death wish. I am sure people are getting more and more impatient and aggressive.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/09/2022 17:52

Our roads are rammed and people are behaving like idiots. There are road works everywhere and more planned in the next week. Temporary traffic lights, diversions and no one ever seems to be actually doing anything.

SparrowsNest · 03/09/2022 17:59

No quieter than usual.in school holidays - will be interesting to see what happens next week.

ChicCroissant · 03/09/2022 17:59

No, quite the opposite!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 03/09/2022 18:02

Was really quiet here during the summer holidays, they all went back on Tuesday (Leicester, we have a different hol schedule) and roads are busy again.

icebearforpresident · 03/09/2022 18:12

Husband and I were in the car today and mentioned that the roads were particularly quiet but that was purely down to the fact we live in south west Scotland and the old firm game was on. By the time we were heading home again a few hours after the game ended traffic was back to normal.

icebearforpresident · 03/09/2022 18:13

Day to day not seeing any difference here.

Lipsandlashes · 03/09/2022 18:14

Definitely not but then we are surrounded by the M25

VirginiaWool · 03/09/2022 18:17

I think it's normally quieter at rush hour during the holidays and this is the same.

One thing I did notice though is that I was out on Thursday for a couple of drinks and lots of bars were really quiet. For a Thursday after payday in the holidays, that is unusual.

Qik · 03/09/2022 18:17

That is all very interesting. Obviously je suis putting 2 with 2 and making 5. Yet it is quieter here than it normally is outside commuting times. I put that down to cost of living crisis and people needed to throw money at their home gas bills rather than their car petrol bills. Reducing discretionary spending etc. Maybe it is just round here.

senua · 03/09/2022 18:22

Quieter here, too. Semi-rural.
I wasn't sure if it was school holidays or something else (eg price of petrol / general cost-of-living worries).

Justcashnosweets · 03/09/2022 18:22

No. My commute takes me on a main road to Edinburgh and it is constantly busy. Even the odd hours I travel for shift work.

TheVanguardSix · 03/09/2022 18:30

Funnily enough, where I am in West London, it's the worst I've seen in years and drivers are behaving like total arseholes. I was on the bus yesterday and it took us 15 minutes to navigate the roundabout. Awful.
I am just off the A4 which is never a nice road to live near but honestly, it's been terrible. Roadworks from August to December are to blame. It is dreadful.

Freedomfighters · 03/09/2022 18:32

No, if anything, it's been far busier. And the driving has become more aggressive. Probably because it's busier.
