Mortified. Can I tell you what I did?

So I have been doing a long student placement after a grueling course (I have 3 young kids.) It has been such a hard slog. I am getting towards the end of my placement and have started at a new location with a new manager for the final stretch. I met her today for the first time ever. And what did idiot here do?
I've taken my managers phone home.
My DH noticed an extra phone on the kitchen bench. I've had it for hours.
Obviously calling her to tell her I'm not a opportunistic theif hasn't worked, with me holding her phone and all. I've had to call my previous placement manager to help me. Who has had to individually message several staff on a Saturday night (in Aus) to tell them what I've done and try to contact her.
Kill me now.

Oh god nightmare.. hope you get it sorted

Thepossibility · 03/09/2022 15:46

Apologies, thief is what I am, not a theif.

Oh no! She’ll probably be really pleased to get her phone back at least.

PolkaDotMankini · 03/09/2022 15:57

Oops. I hope you manage to reunite them and she doesn't hold it against you!

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/09/2022 15:57

😂. You will dine out on this for years. Excellent.

Thepossibility · 03/09/2022 15:59

I hope she is, I just can't get over how dodgy I must look. It's a very small setting and my first day!
And I had to get other people involved.
The shame.

Oh that is funny OP 😂😂

I did something similar a while back. I had been staying overnight at a b&b before doing promo thing to promote a new service the next day - think stall, demo, that kind of thing, with people from the specialty invited to come and see it. I’d been going round the country doing this and was in a small town where everyone knew everyone. I packed everything into my suitcase and headed to the venue only to have the owners of the B&B appear to tell me (in front of everyone) I’d taken the remote control from the TV in the room - and I had to unpack my suitcase there and then (sure enough, there it was) to hand it back to them.

I didn’t steal their stupid remote control of course, I’d obviously bundled it up with everything else as I was rushing to pack - but I could see everyone looking at me like ‘how could you, you thieving incomes’. V embarrassing!

Oh no! Totally something I would do. Has she not tried ringing it?

Thepossibility · 03/09/2022 16:04

Oh yes. There have been plenty of missed calls on the locked phone. My DH has hidden it now because it was stressing me out.

Surely next time it rings you should answer it in case she is ringing it from a friend's phone.

girlmom21 · 03/09/2022 16:08

Why didn't you just answer it?

rainbowandglitter · 03/09/2022 16:09

Can't you answer it? You can answer a locked phone

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 03/09/2022 16:10

She’s ringing her phone to see where it is! Answer it! Not answering it looks more dodgy.

newbiename · 03/09/2022 16:11

Why haven't you answered it ?

Josette77 · 03/09/2022 16:13

Answer the phone!!

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 03/09/2022 16:15

Email her a grovelling apology and ask how you can return it to her asap.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 03/09/2022 16:16

I don't understand why you didn't answer it??

longestlurkerever · 03/09/2022 16:17

If you can't answer it can you call the number that's ringing it back from another phone?

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 03/09/2022 16:17

But other than not answering it for hours, it was just an accident, shit happens. Please tell me it's at least something like your own?

PiggieRats · 03/09/2022 16:18

Hope she isn’t too angry!

TeaAndCock · 03/09/2022 16:18

If you'd just answered the phone you could have apologised profusely and arranged to get it straight back to her without involving the other staff. You're making things worse by ignoring and hiding the phone. Answer it next time it rings.

Pepsipepsi · 03/09/2022 16:23

Another thread that goes from funny and lighthearted to wtf baffling. Answer it!!

No, up until now you were a stressed, tired person who made a mistake. NOW she will possibly think you’re an idiot, as do most of us, it would appear. Answer the fucking phone! You can answer a locked phone, ffs! It’s her trying to find her bloody phone OR a personal contact that could call her directly, and she could have picked it up ages ago! You have some excuse (stressed, exhausted) but what the fuck is your DP thinking not picking up either. Honestly, the pair of you. Don’t go into a life of crime; you aren’t cut out for it. She’ll know you weren’t trying to steal it because no actual thief would do this - leave the phone on, let it ring, and just… stare at it. It’s hilarious and horrific all at once.

PowerHits · 03/09/2022 16:30

🤦🏽‍♀️

The original mistake was unfortunate but not answering it is deliberate! That poor woman, I'd be so pissed off if I was her, it could've been all sorted by now.
