Have used eBay for 20+ years but feel people aren’t viewing / watching as they used to…

are people moving to Vinted?

has anyone else noticed less movement / views etc on eBay in the last few months?

I have more or less given up with it mainly because things are overpriced.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 02/09/2022 19:17

I definitely feel that there’s less of an audience. Probably a mix of Vinted and Facebook marketplace, among others, due to the fees. I wonder if it might pick up a bit as people try and sell things this winter to cover bills, or to look for bargains for themselves. But certainly for clothing a number of my friends have recommended Vinted to me.
Prices in general seem higher, yes, I guess people want to make as much as they can back.

applepiesuxx · 02/09/2022 19:23

Thanks for your posts. I’ve noticed over the last 6 months if you watch things then sellers generally offer a discount. Which got me thinking that if this the trend then maybe things are overpriced to begin with to encourage this pattern of behaviour.

I wondered also if more would post September onwards for Xmas/helping with extra costs.

Have you used Vinted? Is it a similar platform?

After using ebay for years I recently moved to Vinted for selling and buying and I won't go back to ebay ever again now unless they make big changes.

Applebark · 02/09/2022 19:26

From a sellers perspective Vinted is much better than ebay. No fees you don't have to pay for postage. Money clears into your account straight away and you can set the price and leave it there for months without having to resist all the time.

I haven't looked at ebay to buy anything for months. Certainly not clothes anyway.

Invisimamma · 02/09/2022 19:28

I've moved over to Vinted. The fees on eBay seemed to be getting ridiculous. I have to price things a bit cheaper that I might get at auction on eBay but at least I get to keep it all. Postage is far easier and more reliable too.

I had one item not arrive and both me and buyer got our money.

zeromango · 02/09/2022 19:46

I use Vinted for buying and selling now it's great. I've made a fair bit already it's slow and steady but I like that as I'm only selling as a hobby and to make a bit of pin money while on maternity leave. eBay was getting ridiculous with fees and truthfully I rarely use it now except for things with free postage (books for example)

SwelegantParty · 02/09/2022 19:53

They've changed the way they record views - apparently there were a lot of bots pushing up the counts (no idea why!) and they've got rid of them. Plus they only record views in the last 30 days.

Metabigot · 02/09/2022 19:55

Nope. Sold £100 of stock today so all good for me.

OddBoots · 02/09/2022 20:00

I prefer buying on Vinted.

With Ebay you have to add a time factor in whereby if you really like 'item x' but that doesn't end until tomorrow and there is 'item y' which would be my second favourite but it ends today so which do I bid on? - that puts me off.

Noodledoodledoo · 02/09/2022 20:01

I have gone back to ebay, Vinted nothing sells for me unless I price it really cheaply, Facebook is full of timewasters, eBay I just keep it on there till it sells.

Im debting a car boot sale - as I really could do with some income from the stuff.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 02/09/2022 20:02

I've moved to Vinted.

CuriousMariette · 02/09/2022 20:02

I thought those discount offers were automatically sent out depending on how the seller set up the ad? I’ve found things always slow during the nicer weather when a lot of people are out and about.

IWasFunBeforeMum · 02/09/2022 20:05

There's just too many products on there. Along with fees (none on Vinted for seller) I've completely abandoned eBay. Made about £190 in 10 days on Vinted which is surprising but nice!

They are not automatically sent to the buyer. The option to send an offer is sent to the seller. Seller then chooses whether to send offer send what price.

BeastOfBODMAS · 02/09/2022 20:09

I’m doing ok on eBay at the moment but having a clear out of my own stuff and pricing it to sell. I guess it’s a lot harder if you’re buying stock and trying to make a decent margin, to compete with people like me just trying to get any savings in the bank at all

Astounding · 02/09/2022 20:09

I find as long as I start at a really cheap price most things I put on eBay are selling. I've got a small Zara bag on at the moment that's had 178 views and 7 bids so far. It's still being sold in Zara now and I started it off at £2.99 so really cheap. I've also just sold an empty perfume bottle for £5.50 ( started it off at 1.99) which I didn't expect to get and a top that ends in 20 mins and I think will get £5 for. I only sell if there's an 80% selling fee offer . It's not a great amount but it's stuff I don't wear or use so every bit helps.

CarpeNoctem · 02/09/2022 20:12

I used to sell regularly in the 2000s-2010s. I offered regular postage to keep costs down for the buyers. Stopped selling after multiple CFs claimed they hadn't received items (there was no way of proving this since I was using standard postage) and started asking for refunds etc.
The last thing I tried selling was a table and chair set. "Local pickup only" written clearly in the item title, description and postage options. The item was "won" by someone who promptly requested delivery. Relisted the item and the same thing happened again.
I occasionally still buy from eBay but refuse to sell on there any more

woodhill · 02/09/2022 20:13

Do people really buy empty perfume bottles?

Ilikecheeseontoast · 02/09/2022 20:14

exactly this. Vinted much quicker, easier and cheaper!

Yourstory · 02/09/2022 20:15

Amazon are selling so many more products now and are so much more popular nowadays. Going back a number of years and I only used to look there for books. Now I tend to look there for most things before ebay.

applepiesuxx · 02/09/2022 20:40

I’m so pleased I posted as I had no idea. Your views have been so interesting to read. I had no idea about the bots on eBay, genuinely thought I had that number of views which is why now, when I have only a handful, I’m left wondering what’s changed. I list things I no longer use just to top up my money and recycle items. Maybe I do need to try Vinted. I just don’t have much free time so thought it was quicker to list on eBay, a platform I know well.

I sell vintage and antique collectables. So ebay gives me access to a national and if i can be bothered international audience. Is vinted only for clothes?

I was thinking that but then everything I listed last weekend has been bid on already and it doesnt finish until Sunday so that's very unusual for me. I think the bank Holiday and kids goinf back to school soon has got people hunting for autumn baby clothes I guess, glad I kept them from last winter.

DomesticShortHair · 02/09/2022 20:46

I lost faith in eBay. I ordered an item, it was supposedly delivered by Yodel (it wasn’t). eBay took Yodel’s word over mine and refused to refund me. Bottom line is, I now only buy things from there now that cost a couple of quid max, and even then, only if I can’t find it somewhere else.

i used to spend a small fortune, due to my complete lack of willpower or ability to save money.
