I think ebay is shite but you get a bigger audience so i continue to use it.
Gumtree and Shpock are good but more local
Amazon fees are outrageous so i stopped selling on tbere a few years ago
As a buyer I surf them all

RedRobyn2021 · 02/09/2022 20:55

I personally prefer eBay

Meseekslookatme · 02/09/2022 20:58

I used to spend thousands on ebay, but it's full of businesses and scammers.
Enough to totally put me off bothering now.
I love vinted

What's the protection for sellers on Vinted? If the buyer says it doesn't arrive for example.

Celeryfavour · 02/09/2022 21:15

I have a long list of saved searches on Ebay which I still check daily in case something I'm looking for comes up, but it seems much more expensive recently - starting price is never 99p anymore. Perhaps because there are fewer watchers so no bidding wars.

I've bought a few things on Vinted, I like it but wish I could use PayPal.

PlanetNormal · 02/09/2022 21:21

I've also just sold an empty perfume bottle for £5.50

Why on earth would anyone buy an empty perfume bottle?

The money is held until you confirm the item is all good.
The transactions are kind of done using a form of DM with prompts etc.
Disputes can be resolved with that, vinted can use these transcripts if there's problems

fernz · 02/09/2022 21:30

I still buy from eBay regularly but mostly BNWT items and I'm quite specific about what I search for and view. In the past I may have spent more time browsing and bidding on lower cost second hand items.

I'm more likely to buy if it's Buy Now or Best Offer as the app notifications rarely work on my phone so I miss auction end times.

Is that more open to abuse? In that buyers have the item at that point and you don't have the money

It's quite personal and there's a rating system same as ebay.
If either side cancel they get negative feedback too so there's less mucking around.
I've ordered quite a few things and only had one glitch (missing parcel) that was resolved easily. Sale didn't complete, seller was able to claim from parcel carrier and I got a refund from vinted.

Meseekslookatme · 02/09/2022 21:42

Also, I think vinted are a bit less "computer says no" than ebay

Fill with water and sell as genuine?

Feetache · 02/09/2022 21:46

EBay isn't cheap anymore.

Believe me, they do!

Some bottles are highly collectible, some are used as props or 'for show', others might be refilled and some are just really pretty.

Blossomandbee · 02/09/2022 22:27

Apps like Vinted, Depop and Facebook marketplace are more popular now.
eBay have driven sellers away with high fees and very little protection. For this reason I wouldn't sell on there myself.
As a buyer, if I want something new I tend to use Amazon and get free delivery. Secondhand I don't want the faff of bidding on an auction, I prefer buy it now but that limits choices again.

Astounding · 02/09/2022 22:39

Do people really buy empty perfume bottles

I mainly wear Jo Malone perfume and when I finish them someone always buys the empties. One bottle was a limited edition and was patterned and there was so much interest. It was crazy! I’ve even sold half used bottles on eBay too. I bought a Jo Malone perfume and after a while decided I didn’t like it. It sold for about £14. Empty bottles that come with the original box and bag do pretty well too. So if you’re thinking about selling your empty bottles keep hold of the box and a bag if it comes with one.

SierraSapphire · 03/09/2022 07:25

I gave up selling on eBay a couple of years ago as I didn't seem to be getting as much for things. I liked though that you can set all the auctions to finish on the same day and make one trip to send them instead of this being erratic as on Vinted (or DePop when I used to post things for DD).

As a buyer I still find eBay more satisfying to search for things on than Vinted, I wonder whether Vinted is aimed more at the 20/30 something market, and I'm a bit older.

lochmaree · 03/09/2022 07:58

I used to use ebay a lot as a buyer but its too expensive compared to other places for most things. one thing it is good for though is customer return electrical items, I've recently bought an instant pot, a phone and a kettle on ebay. all customer returns for much less than they retail new for. I love vinted now though, it's great for kids clothes, ebay is too expensive - often you may as well just buy new than buy from ebay. as a seller I tend to use marketplace as then I don't have to post stuff often.

I only use the courier options and these can be tracked via the app so you can see when it is delivered or arrives at the pick up point.

Ebay was terrible for people 'not recieving' things.

The only thing about Vinted is how 'very good' condition means very different things to different people. You get listings like "condition - very good - got some felt tip pen marks on the sleeves and the stitching has come away from the neckline but lots of life left" drives me mad!

Or something listed as new without tags and in the description says "Only worn twice".

But for the most part it's great and soooo much easier to list and what you sell for it what you get, no fees. In the end using Ebay I was paying ebay fees and then Paypal fees so it was hardly worth if for me just selling the DC's old clothes.

lljkk · 03/09/2022 08:15

Opposite, sorry, I sold 4 items in last week, which is a lot for me, at least compared to preceding 5m. All clothing.

Stuck my toe into Vinted maybe 18m ago, but nothing went.

anon2022anon · 03/09/2022 09:10

I listed something on eBay last week after using Vinted for months- it's so much hard work to list on there now, Vinted is so quick to use

tectonicplates · 03/09/2022 09:28

I've been selling my old stuff on Ebay for years. I ditched auctions years ago and sell everything as Buy It Now and just leave it to sit there.

I used to sell about 2-4 items per month, but now I've only sold two items in six months! It's very unusual, and I believe it's been caused by their new page counting system.

If I move over to Vinted, would it be advisable to use the same username there as on Ebay, or should I use a different name? I've been meaning to give it a try for ages. And am I right in thinking that buyers pay the postage fee separately? At the moment I give free postage on Ebay as it gets you seen more.

holidaynightmare · 03/09/2022 09:45

@applepiesuxx

I've not had much joy with vinted but my stuff always sells on eBay

With the cost of postage tho I've moved towards selling my bits in smaller Bundles tho as it seems to shift better than doing items one by one.

I've put some toys and games and clothes on this week and they have all sold - some new some old. I think people will look at eBay for an option does Christmas definately tho one lady messaged me as I was selling some pyjamas and she said she loved them and was putting them in her sons Christmas Eve box (they were crimbo ones used I put in a bubble with some other Christmassy bits) so people are looking.

Applebark · 03/09/2022 10:09

@tectonicplates for the postage you select the courier companies that you would use in your settings. Evri, yodel, royal mail, ups etc. When you list an item you select the size of the item. When the buyer pays for the item they select the courier they would like to use and they pay for the postage label. Price is worked out automatically. Vinted will give you instructions on what to do next but usually it's just package your item, take it to the drop off point where they scan a qr code and print out a postage label and they stick onto the parcel. Both the seller and the buyer gets the tracking information. As a seller if you accept Royal mail you have to buy the postage and you upload the postage receipt but there is no tracking.

tectonicplates · 03/09/2022 10:28

What if you want to send by Royal Mail signed for? And who pays for the postage?
