This game is usually rigid in its use of American spellings so it was odd to see an English word yesterday.

Not always - IIRC there was one topic on redactle, 'Indus Civilisation' which was spelled the U.K. rather than US way, but with one subsection using 'civilization'. It may be that it depends who has done most of the work on the piece.

There also isn't standardisation of things like BC and AD versus BCE and CE .

I think it was "Cradle of Civilisation" but both spellings were in the article.
