Mine is Mexico

I know it’s near the equator. I know Canada is north of America. Yet everytime I think of Mexico, I randomly think it’s North America before I have to remind myself no, it’s south.

I always thought Bermuda was near Cuba.
I keep looking at it on a map and it just doesn't register that it's nowhere near Cuba 🙈

I always thought Billericay was a quaint Scottish seaside town similar to Balamory!

I'm with 52 states 🤣🤔

I thought it was in Wales and still have to correct 😳

That Barnstaple isn't in Yorkshire and Pontefract isn't in Wales. I was 50 until I realised this and conclude that both of these places are in the wrong place. 😊

Well. I thought Pontefract was in Wales until about 30 seconds ago when I read your post and googled it. 😶

OP

Mexico is not just in North America its full name is "Estados Unidos Mexicanos", in English this is officially, "United Mexican States" but can also be translated to 'united states of Mexico'.

Yes it is in North America, then you have central America, then you have South America.

BUT

Mexico, Central America and South America are sometimes referred to as 'Latin America' although 'Latin America' actually refers te the languages spoken ie French, Portuguese and Spanish. So includes Cuba but not the Falkland Islands or Belize.

Pontefract isn't in Wales??? Just off to google...

I thought Gorbachev was dead I was surprised to find out he hadn't been but now is dead so I was wrong now im...right?

I thought he died years ago!

KickAssAngel · 03/09/2022 05:23

I know that if you want to heat up(or cool down) a car, it won't get hotter more quickly by turning up(or down) the heat. But I still do it.

Two things my DM told me when I was very young which I believed for years.

  1. Mulligatawny soup is made from dead owls.
  2. Golden syrup is made from dead lions.

She was very convincing was my DM.

The fell nearest my house is called Pen y Ghent (North Yorks). I always think it sounds like it should be in Wales.

Justcannot · 03/09/2022 05:48

Also have to correct myself thinking there's 52 states. I think it's because there's 52 weeks in the year, and 52 cards in a pack, but that's not a good reason as there's no relationship between those things!

I'm a geography teacher, and still always have to double check where Guyana is (S. America, not Africa).

hop321 · 03/09/2022 06:48

I thought there were 52 states....

Embarrassingly I had to Google how many days in a year recently as 365 started to sound wrong,

I also have a mental blank over the number of cards in a deck, even thought I know it's 13 times 4

balalake · 03/09/2022 07:17

52% of those who voted in June 2016 know something is wrong but won't admit it.

I can see where that belief comes from.

I remember reading (may have been apocryphal?) that, when they first introduced jars of baby food into Japan, nobody bought it, as they were horrified, thinking that the pictures of babies on the label denoted the contents, rather than the intended consumers!

Still, all these years later, The Apprentice candidates still thought it would be a very good idea to make jars of baby food with the apparent slogan '1st time dies' emblazoned on the jar!

I think Belfast sounds like it should be in Scotland.

I know it's not, but it takes my brain a second to think Ireland and not Scotland when I hear Belfast.

I looked him up on wikipedia about two years ago and I'm sure it said he had died a long time ago. It's strange how others thought the same.

Chewbecca · 03/09/2022 12:11

Elgin Marbles also belong on this list.

Arkansas. I know it's not pronounced "Ar-Kansas" but my brain still goes to that for some reason

Very much school playground squabbling.

For some reason, despite knowing there are 50 US states, I often think there are 52.

Me too! I don't know where I have this idea from but 52 seems to make more sense to me?Grin
