Mine is Mexico

I know it’s near the equator. I know Canada is north of America. Yet everytime I think of Mexico, I randomly think it’s North America before I have to remind myself no, it’s south.

I thought Gorbachev was dead I was surprised to find out he hadn't been but now is dead so I was wrong now im...right?

Yes me too! I also sometimes thought Putin died years ago. Did he keep coming back? Not back to life 😂 but like he was President then not then was again? I’m gonna have to Google it

SpinningWheelOfFortune · 02/09/2022 20:10

I always get shoulder and elbow mixed up. I obviously know which is which, but always have to pause for a second before saying either to check I'm saying the right one.

SleepingAgent · 02/09/2022 20:11

@PollyCreo Delaware!

Onehotmess · 02/09/2022 20:12

I’m sure she means it goes Canada, USA, Mexico but she sometimes thinks Canada, Mexico, USA

meateatingveggie · 02/09/2022 20:16

I've just had to Google where Hawaii is. It's clearly moved since my teenage dream of honeymooning there. ( we went to wales)

DWMoosmum · 02/09/2022 20:19

That it's illegal to have ketchup on a Sunday dinner!

If you wear red shoes it means you don't wear knickers!

If you can't fight, wear a big hat.

These were all passed down through the family 🤣

@PollyCreo Delaware!

That's the one! I always forget the Carolinas too 😅

Xiaoxiong · 02/09/2022 20:25

That it's pronounced "por-TA-ka-bin".

I say it correctly now but it takes a moment of convincing myself every time I see it that it's not por-TA-ka-bin. There's one along the train line on my commute with the word written in huge letters across the side so I should have practiced enough by now. But no.

This is one of those Mandela things. I'm convinced I was taught that there were 52 states in school.

Is it because 2 states are not contiguous ie Alastair and hawaii so people think to add on 2 and make 52?

Metabigot · 02/09/2022 20:26

When they announce on the radio traffic due to a ‘shed load of..’ I thought they meant like loads of it ‘ ‘ I’ve got a shed load of dvds’ not that the load has been shed onto the road 🙈 I still don’t ‘hear’ it how it’s meant

Wait what?! Portacabin how do you pronounce it?!

Metabigot · 02/09/2022 21:17

Is it not POR ta KA bin as in a portable cabin?

Kerrrmieee · 02/09/2022 21:22

Porta cabin

I'm confused too, can't see any other way of pronouncing it.

Kerrrmieee · 02/09/2022 21:25

Porta-cab-in
Porta cabin
Portacabin

Are we not all pronouncing it the same? 🤣

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/09/2022 21:32

I always thought Billericay was a quaint Scottish seaside town similar to Balamory!

I used to think Billericay was in Greece - I think I was confusing it with Faliraki!

When they announce on the radio traffic due to a ‘shed load of..’ I thought they meant like loads of it ‘ ‘ I’ve got a shed load of dvds’ not that the load has been shed onto the road 🙈 I still don’t ‘hear’ it how it’s meant

I remember Graham Norton pondering on exactly this on his Radio 2 show, just after a traffic bulletin where they mentioned a shed load on a major road!

Also, sort of loosely related to portacabins, I can now never see a portaloo without remembering the ongoing Ant & Dec sketch 'Men In Brown', where one was used as a gateway to a secret spy facility and referred to as 'Portal Double Zero' Grin

Xiaoxiong · 02/09/2022 21:33

Yes you are all correct, it's is POR-ta-KA-bin. As in, a portable cabin.

But I find it almost impossible not to say por-TA-ka-bin. I know it's completely wrong but I still see it when I see the word Portakabin and it takes real thought to say it the way everyone else does!!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/09/2022 21:36

It IS pronounced POR-tuh-ka-bin, but PP mistakenly thought that it was pronounced por-TA-ka-bin.... if I've understood correctly.

Are you thinking it's more like por-takker-bin, rather than porter-cabin?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/09/2022 21:37

X-posted with Xiaoxiong.

Libre2 · 02/09/2022 21:43

OP - I knew you what meant in your example and I am exactly the same - despite working in travel and therefore having world maps in both my office and kitchen!

sjpkgp1 · 02/09/2022 21:43

That if you flushed the toilet on a plane whilst still sat on it (why? first of all) all of your insides would be sucked out.

I know the old Rowntree's factory in York is now flats. I know this, because I pass it when I work in the area a few times a year.

BUT STILL - when I took the dc to the "York Chocolate Story" attraction (very good by the way) last week, I was expecting it to be in the old factory, not in the middle of the city.

Kerrrmieee · 02/09/2022 21:57

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll let's never holiday together 🤣 ooh Billericay - lovely!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/09/2022 21:57

I'm on an app called Pitch Hero. It tells me when DD's football matches are, scores etc.

For three years I have been pronouncing it "Pitch-Eroo", like Bukaroo.
