Did I dream this? Does anyone else remember?

I first joined MN 12 years ago (have had maybe 4 accounts since due to changing e-mail addresses etc).

Back then, did DS12 mean my 12 year old son or my 12th born son? I'm absolutely convinced it was the latter.

Somehow over the years, and I'm not sure how, the number seems to have morphed into the age.

Just returning to MN after a gap & it's really noticeable.

What's Bunty?

What's Bunty?

Bunty was a girls' comic.

(I am also old enough)

Yes I recall DS1 and DD3 would imply first born son and third born daughter when I joined 18ish years ago.
Today I would read it as you Son is 1 and your Daughter 3 years old.

Thank you. I thought I was going slightly mad.

Yes DD3 used to mean 3rd daughter and now means 3yr old daughter. I remember it too.
So instead of using DD2 I would now write DD9, even though I haven’t got 9 daughters!

stayathomegardener · 30/08/2022 23:59

We were never allowed to have Bunty magazines as DM disapproved.

Only ever got to read them in the Dr's waiting room.

Kerrrmieee · 31/08/2022 00:01

Jackie was so exciting when you were old enough to progress from Bunty.

HaveringWavering · 31/08/2022 00:02

Er, DS[number] still means the order in which they were born.

People using it to convey an age are in the minority, and incorrect.

Kerrrmieee · 31/08/2022 00:03

I still think DD1 DD2 means first daughter second daughter. I probably don't notice, but DD12 would catch my eye 🤣

It was. And Just17 later on.

I used to read Mandy. It was the Betamax to Bunty's VHS

Missmarps · 31/08/2022 00:03

My grandad used to take me to the shop to buy Mandy and a 10p mix for a treat sometimes after picking ne up from school 😁

Kerrrmieee · 31/08/2022 00:04

Did Bunty used to have a sewing pattern pull out? Something did!

I wasn't allowed J17, it would have led me astray apparently 🙄

Do you think it's in the minority? It may depend which topics you look at but all I seem to see is DS13, DD8 etc.

Reading Just17 at the age of 12 in middle school. We were so grown up.

The problem page!

ThatsRoughBuddy · 31/08/2022 00:05

Yes, we'd write DS2(7) to indicate second son who is 7. No idea why it changed.

mrsfollowill · 31/08/2022 00:15

Oh I used to get Bunty and MIndy. The day I bought a 'Jackie' I was told off by my mum as it was 'too mature' for me- I also used to get 'Tammy' magazine and 'Jinty'. They sort of morphed into 'Girl'. Loved my mags in the 80's - was no internet then though Grin.
Into the 90's started a full time job and then started buying Cosmo- stopped buying by 1998 as saving for a house deposit and thankfully the internet emerged and I no longer felt the need to read the tedious crap they peddled.
I have a few vintage (circa 1981/1982) 'annuals' - Debbie, My Guy, etc- thought they may be worth something one day but seem to be £3.99 on ebay- they cost that back in the 80's

LondonQueen · 31/08/2022 00:20

Yes changed over the last few years.

My thoughts too

Droo · 31/08/2022 00:39

Bunty and Jackie were fine in my house (although I preferred Misty) but My Guy caused problems because of the swearing in the photo stories.

BadNomad · 31/08/2022 00:39

It's both and depends on if the ages are important to the story or if it's just to differentiate between siblings rather than being a trend. Like how some people say DC when the gender of the child(ren) isn't important to the post.

DH and I have six children between us. I have DD12, DD14, he has DTSS17, DSD18 and we have a DS4 between us.

Or

I have two DD and one DS. DD1 is shy. DD2 is contrary. DS is my angel.

watcherintherye · 31/08/2022 00:41

Does anyone remember June and Schoolfriend?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 31/08/2022 00:48

Team Bunty, Jackie & Just 17. Oh and Smash Hits too.
Sorry, what was your question?
