Did I dream this? Does anyone else remember?

I first joined MN 12 years ago (have had maybe 4 accounts since due to changing e-mail addresses etc).

Back then, did DS12 mean my 12 year old son or my 12th born son? I'm absolutely convinced it was the latter.

Somehow over the years, and I'm not sure how, the number seems to have morphed into the age.

Just returning to MN after a gap & it's really noticeable.

Oh yes, I think it was dd1 and dd2 but I have a dd and a ds so I didn't really care.

Mythril · 31/08/2022 00:51

Yes people overwhelmingly use it incorrectly now and it grates a bit!

AlexandriasWindmill · 31/08/2022 00:55

I know someone who was in a Jackie photo story! I loved Bunty and Mandy and Misty. In fact I still remember some of the stories from the Misty annual that traumatised me 😱

I think the majority still use the number to mean birth order rather than age.

JestersTear · 31/08/2022 00:59

I think I got a Mandy, and there was a horrible story in there that really upset me (I can't have been older than 9) and so I wasn't allowed it anymore.

Along with Bunty, I still got the Dandy and the Beano lol
Moved on to Jackie and No1 (music mag- with lyrics!)

whatwouldAnnaDelveydo · 31/08/2022 01:00

Yes, I remember the DC[number] thing. I felt like everyone was upper middle class here in 2009. Everyone told me to LTB from 2010. I did it in 2019.

Caminante · 31/08/2022 01:01

Oh I remember buying the first edition of Just17, so exciting! I think there was a bonus magazine or supplement and a few gift but can't remember what it was. I was actually 17 at the time 😄

Time40 · 31/08/2022 01:05

Did Bunty used to have a sewing pattern pull out? Something did!

Bunty had a cut-out doll on the back page, with lots of cut-out clothes. If you were really keen, you stuck the doll to cardboard in order to make it easier to dress.

AlexandriasWindmill · 31/08/2022 01:09

I loved the cut-out dolls.

BadNomad · 31/08/2022 01:10

Oh! I remember my mum buying me Just17 and More for the first time. Clearly, she never looked inside More. "Position of the Fortnight". 😮

I still haven't tried half of those. I don't think I can fold like that any more.

Berlinlover · 31/08/2022 01:11

Does anyone remember Hi?

AlexandriasWindmill · 31/08/2022 01:15

It is bizarre to think about the position of the fortnight. I remember looking at the drawings and trying to work out what was going on 😄
Pretty soon I switched to music mags like Q. I thought I was so cool. 😎

Kerrrmieee · 31/08/2022 01:17

Smash Hits, originally edited by one Neil Tennant.

Who's surname happened to be nicked by a certain David for his RADA thingy.

Oh yes pop pickers, still got it 🤣

ClaryFairchild · 31/08/2022 01:19

If you want to do age you'd do DD(12) not DD12.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 31/08/2022 01:20

It's always been a contentious point. At one time people used to mainly mean which child it was DD2 (second daughter) it was often DD2 (8) Then lack of a space after Dd/DD tended to refer to birth number rather than she, with a gap denoting s
age.

I think. DD3 (6) makes the most sense, but you just have use the context to try to work it out.

someone posted DS12 blah blah the other day and I was so tempted to say that after at least 11 other children you'd think you'd be used to it by now 🤣

ideasmirrour · 31/08/2022 02:17

Been on MN ten years and it’s always been used in both ways — you just work out which from the context. I don’t find it an issue!

sofap · 31/08/2022 02:27

Honestly it depends on context? If someone is referring to DD1 going out drinking every night and DD2 staying in and doing homework (as an example) you wouldn't think they were 1 and 2 years old.

I wasn't on MN at that time but I'm sure i've seen threads even very recently some of which use the numbers to refer to age and some which use it to refer to the order which they're born.

Undertheoldlindentree · 31/08/2022 02:42

Team Twinkle!

VashtaNerada · 31/08/2022 04:04

Drives me mad too! It was always DD2 (12). We used to have an actual document on here explaining the acronyms for anyone new - what happened to that?

Sandunesandseashells · 31/08/2022 04:04

watcherintherye · 31/08/2022 00:41

Does anyone remember June and Schoolfriend?

I do, but I think it was through my mum having read it (She’s 17 years older than me). I used to read Mirabelle, my middle sister (DD2!) read Jackie and younger sister (DD3) read Twinkle.

Sandunesandseashells · 31/08/2022 04:07

Now I think about it, she still had the June and Schoolfriend annuals which I read.

Onceuponatimethen · 31/08/2022 04:08

Ooh op Bunty! Sqeeeee the Four Marys!

Back to your question, people are using it for my DS is 1 = DS1 but people are still also using it the RIGHT way as DS1 = eldest son.

SavingsThreads · 31/08/2022 04:47

I only joined 4 or 5 years ago and it was still the 'right' way around then. seems to have suddenly gone

startfresh · 31/08/2022 05:03

This confuses me as used separately. I always feel it should be birth order (age) for example 3rd born, 12 year old daughter could be:

DD3
DD(12)
DD3(12)

To distinguish but that's just me.

startfresh · 31/08/2022 05:04

Should have read to the end but phone dying! Oops.

aramox1 · 31/08/2022 05:04

Yes it used to be dd(14) vs dd1. Confusing.
