Otley, Horsforth...other?

Hello. After several months of contemplation I have just been offered a job in West Yorkshire. I am relocating from the South with my primary school aged child for a better QOL (single parent) and I would be really grateful for your views/ information about good and bad bits of living, school, property costs in these areas. I will be commuting into Bradford for work. Thanks so much for your help!

As others have said your commute from either Otley or Horsforth to Bradford would be an absolute nightmare. I'd say Ilkley too for the train, schools and more for teens. And they have a Betty's 😁

EC1977 · 30/08/2022 17:16

Guiseley would be perfect for you, own train station with direct train into Bradford, takes around 6/7 minutes. Schools are excellent, plenty of green spaces and sports club. House prices are a little cheaper than Horsforth but probably more expensive than otley. A wonderful place to raise children 😊

belle40 · 30/08/2022 17:21

Thanks so much everyone. I am very busy on Rightmove at the moment. I will definitely look at Guiseley too.

Calverley?

RampantIvy · 30/08/2022 17:24

I would look at properties near stations on the Wharfedale Line - Shipley, Baildon, Guiseley, Menston, Burley in Wharfedale, Ben Rhydding and Ilkley.
Otley is a lovely market town, but if you want to commute to Bradford I would drive to Menston and get the train from there. I'm not sure what parking is like in Menston these days. It is many years since I lived in that part of the world.

Trying to think rural & villagey for you... Denshaw, just off m62, Haworth, Oakworth, near Hebden Bridge 'on the tops', Mytholmroyd, Cullingworth, Ripponden, Barkisland.
Good trains and M62 between Leeds & Manchester, so two big cities for weekend exploring.
Personally I'd drive up and drive around for a few days. I'd also probably rent for the first six months so you can do more exploring & look for the right place for you to put down your roots.

Nellynoo182 · 30/08/2022 17:30

Just to say we live in Horsforth (moved from Shropshire 7 years ago) and bloody love it. Lovely place, feels so safe, park is lovely, the restaurants and bars in town street & new road side are fab. Easy access into Leeds, great schools. We just love it here! 😊 best of luck with your house search!

SpringCalling · 30/08/2022 17:37

Ilkley had an amazing tennis club - check it out. Cricket too.

I've been walking up that way recently, also Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden. Gorgeous countryside and houses and some nice looking villages with a good range of independent shops, but very steep and looks like it would be a challenge to live round there in winter.

ethelredonagoodday · 30/08/2022 17:50

We have friends in Menston, they're very outdoorsy and love it there. One child is at primary in the village, another is at Ilkley Grammar School.
As others have said, Ilkley probably ticks all your boxes, but is pricey.

Delatron · 30/08/2022 17:51

Menston is a lovely village with a good primary school, quick train links to Bradford and Leeds and the secondary school option in Guiseley is good (or there’s St Mary’s/ Ilkley Grammar).
Guiseley is bigger but a nice town for kids to grow up in.

Ilkley is beautiful; the outdoor pool, loads of lovely cafes/bars etc. Amazing walks on your doorstep yet a quick train ride to Leeds or Bradford.

Worth also looking at Baildon.

As another poster said I’d basically look along that Wharfedale train line in to Bradford.

FixTheBone · 30/08/2022 17:57

Calverley is a good shout, 2 miles closer to bradford, but in the worst traffic possibly 20 minutes closer in terms of commute. Unless you're commuting into Leeds, traffic is pretty reasonable outside weekday rush hours.

Apperley bridge is another option - new railway station, new houses, right on the canal, closer to bradford and has woodhouse grove school on the doorstep.

dinksandbinks · 30/08/2022 18:11

Horsforth ticks a lot of your boxes. It’s a 15 min drive to New Pudsey station, with a good train service to Bradford. It has good cricket and tennis clubs, it’s a bit more diverse than Otley (that’s not saying much though, both are very white), lots of independent businesses. All the primary schools are fab, the secondary school is good from what I’ve heard. The parent scene (🤣) is really good too and there’s a lovely park.

Calverley is a good shout for a more rural feel, and it’s closer to Bradford, though there’s only one primary school and I don’t know what catchment it’s in for secondary.

I do like Guiseley, but it doesn’t feel as rural as Calverley and it feels big compared to Horsforth. Also very white.

If you cycle, there is the Leeds Bradford cycle superhighway, which is pretty good as far as the north goes for cycling infrastructure. Check out the route and see if it goes near your building.

I commute by train North Leeds to Manchester from New Pudsey and tbh I love it. It’s my one time of day where nobody is hassling me, other than ticket checks 🤣

Quitelikeacatslife · 30/08/2022 18:37

Just had quick search on Rightmove, if looking at ilkley keep your search tight as you get Keighley coming up which you don't want.
If you look at Baildon post the link and I'll look where it is.

Ooo, well remembered, the cycle path! I hate cycling but every tells me I'm so lucky to be so close to a direct path into Leeds and Bradford. Unless they are anti it and then they try to tell me what a waste of money it was.

GeordieRacer · 30/08/2022 19:41

I'd look at Skipton. Nice town, great schools, direct train through to Bradford

PatsyJStone · 30/08/2022 20:00

It's really not bad in winter, enough snow plows & gritters around. If you're in the more remote areas lots of farmers have the contract for gritting so keep the country lanes clear as much as possible.

seasidemum1 · 30/08/2022 20:17

Used to live in Otley - far prefer it to ilkely, it's got a lovely folky, hippy vibe. If you're on the right side of otley you can get to menston station easily and there is plenty of free parking. If you're outdoorsy I would definitely prefer otley to farsley, Pudsey etc, you're into the dales so quickly and also can get to the lakes relatively quickly. Agree that saltaire also very nice, personally I find Ilkley thinks the world of itself but other areas have more character.

belle40 · 30/08/2022 21:18

If I were working in Bradford, I'd look at Saltaire, Bingley, Baildon area. Good train links into both Leeds and Bradford, and lovely countryside.

Otley probably isn't ideal for a commute into Bradford.

I agree with this. I don't live in Otley or Ilkley, but very near both, and I would choose Otley over Ilkley.

RampantIvy · 30/08/2022 21:27

I used to live in Guiseley. This thread is making me feel nostalgic. I often go back for Otley show.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/08/2022 21:36

I work in Leeds. A lot of my colleagues with young families live in Guiseley.

Octomore · 30/08/2022 21:36

One thing about Ilkley that put me off when we were house hunting is the access by road. There is basically one road in and out of the town (A65), and at any vaguely busy time of day it's totally rammed.

Skipton and its surrounding villages are lovely and good for access to both Bradford and Leeds. The commute would be a bit longer than the Saltaire area, but the access to countryside is fantastic - you can be in the Dales in minutes. Skipton has grammar schools, so it depends whether you would want that system.

Nordstrom · 30/08/2022 21:44

The Wharfedale train line to Bradford (approx 30 mins) starts in Ilkley. It stops at Burley-in-Wharfedale, Menston, Guiseley, Baildon, Shipley then you are into Bradford proper.

Of those places, if schools are a priority then you want Ilkley, Burley or Menston. All great areas for families and what you are looking for.

Feel free to pm me if you want some more info Smile
