South London, not central London.

Standard pub. Saturday night.

One medium white wine, one pint of beer
Packet of nuts and olives.

DH (pub landlord in central London) says drink prices were ott but NZ sauv is the most expensive wine to drink in a pub (usually about £10 a glass)

£10 a glass is 'relatively' cheap!

There is such a thing as a 'medium' glass of wine in 1 or 2 places have been.

There is a bar/pub at Amsterdam Airport that is more expensive than that. We needed somewhere to wait for our flight home yesterday and DH paid £50 for 1 large glass of house white, a large Heineken, four tiny chicken wings and 4 cheese bites that were tiny, that had the texture of spring rolls, they were bar snacks not meals to keep the teenager happy so the drinks were about £25 and snacks £25. The DC wanted tap water so no drinks to buy for them. I was really surprised my DH spent this but he said it was because we were essentially paying to sit somewhere for 2 hours.

We’re going to end up with dodgy gin palaces ( aka Spoons) versus nice pubs. If we aren’t there already.
My very lovely local doesn’t have much below £5 a pint even for bitter which is normally cheaper than lager or cider.
Given supermarket alcohol hasn’t gone up that much I can see a real change coming in going out for a social drink.

StellaGibson2022 · 29/08/2022 23:52

I can too!

Septemberslooming · 30/08/2022 00:03

£22, although nuts and olives are pricy so it's difficult to judge.

NZ Sauvignon Blanc is at an absolute premium at the moment. It’s not just the low harvest, but the rest of the world has finally woken up to it too. So it’s massively in demand at a time when supply is low. We charge £8.70 for a 175ml where I work, and that’s in North Wales. In comparison, a Chilean is £5.65.
Pint of moretti is £5.40 for context.

OP - was it Balham? Was it the Avalon, Devonshire? A fancy wine bar place?? Tell us!!

Could have been the Devonshire. It was empty but nice decor. Just off the main road. Honestly don't know for sure but Devonshire rings a bell

I don't live in London was just visiting and glad to go back oop north!

I was at my cousins wedding a couple of years ago and paid £10 for a large glass of wine ,we live in greater manchester, it was admittedly a posh hotel but I was horrified .at the prices.

Oh I hate that, when you're invited to a wedding and expected to 'party' (and hand over cheques & cash) and there's a ridiculously expensive pay bar.

Tarkan · 04/09/2022 16:03

Our local has just put their prices up for a pint because of the cost of the gas for the pumps but we're still only £6.50 per round (pint of lager for DH, 187ml bottle of white wine for me). We're in NE Scotland in a smallish town but even other towns near us seem to cost a lot more. It's years since we've been to London but even when we go to Aberdeen or down to Glasgow the price differences take a bit to get used to as we're so used to getting a good bit of change from a tenner. I paid that at the Radisson in Manchester a few months ago although thar to me is more palatable in a posh city centre hotel than a London local.

OP there's no such thing as a 'standard south London pub' prices will vary hugely by neighbourhood. My favourite pub in Catford still charges 4.50 a pint.

What pub is this? @dreamingbohemian
My friend’s local has just started charging £6.10 for a pint, which is a bit crazy. I think he’d be happier with £4.50!

ALongHardWinter · 04/09/2022 18:12

Bloody hell! 😯 I paid £18 for a pint of beer and a large glass of wine in a Putney pub about 6 months ago,and I thought THAT was outrageous!

Blythe Hill Tavern! Old-school Irish pub. Lovely place.

Perfect - that’s not far from him at at all @dreamingbohemian thank you, I’ll pass it on! 🍻
