South London, not central London.

Standard pub. Saturday night.

One medium white wine, one pint of beer
Packet of nuts and olives.

£12 for a 175ml glass of wine? 😱

I live in London and this is insane

Rina66 · 29/08/2022 19:31

A medium wine £12 - how much for the bottle????

What kind of pub?

We were in London a few weeks ago and didn't pay anywhere near that much. Were the olives hand picked by virgins in the dew of Eden?

Standard pub in s London.

Olives weren't fresh, in a sachet thing. I didn't realise how much they'd be until too late.

Bog Standard dry white wine. Camden helps lager I think

I got charged £12.50 for one of those small bottles of Prosecco last week!!!!
200ml!!
Who on earth is prepared to pay these prices, I will never go back! (Surrey, village pub).
It's a shame as everyone wants to support local businesses but I just felt like a real mug!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/08/2022 19:35

Blimey. The wine sounds ridiculously expensive.

I do live in London and expect a 175ml glass of wine to be £5 or 6.

did you choose the most expensive one? Also, was the pub somewhere posh?

Funnily enough it was the olives I winced at more. Not fresh, tiny sachet thing...

Blimey, this is why I rarely venture out, let alone into a big city.

dropthevipers · 29/08/2022 19:40

These places are taking the piss and deserve to go out of business. You can get an entire bottle of low end single malt for that price. Fuck them.

It was not mega posh, but reasonably affluent area I guess. I asked for a new Zealand sauv as that's pretty much my tipple.

Maybe they had a very expensive nz sauv on the menu and fleeced me?

My guess was 17-18 quid for the drinks, wouldn't have known about the nuts or olives (I'm a cheese n onion Seabrooks kind of gal) so I wasn't far off.

I can still remember the first time we paid over a fiver for a glass of wine up here (W. York's). My DH carried it two handed from the bar like it was the foreskin of the baby Jesus

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/08/2022 19:41

Did they put a service charge on too? Always makes me wince a bit at how much difference that can make!

Well don't go telling friends and family that these are normal London prices, because they categorically are not. Without the olives, and in central-ish London, I rarely pay more than £15. It sounds as though there was an error in the bill.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 29/08/2022 19:54

These aren’t typical London prices though are they. I was there earlier this year and there were plenty of local pubs charging 4-5 pounds a pint, although you’ll get run for more for wine or a G & T obviously. Plus you do have the spoons option, of which there are a lot of good ones to go with the shit ones.

oakleaffy · 29/08/2022 19:55

£15??

'Earlier this year' is like a century ago the way things are rising at the current time

Christ. I bought a bottle of perfectly decent wine in tesco yesterday for £5 with a clubcard saving. Note to self, never go to pub again.

North Wales. At the bar the price list had Chilean sauvignon blanc £6.85 new Zealand £2 dearer. To be fair NZ had failed crops last year so the price went up considerably

Pub was pretty empty on a Saturday night and I think I know why..

Old joke. A gorilla goes into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender is surprised but pours him one, which the gorilla drinks down. The gorilla then asks, "What do I owe you?". The bartender, recalling that he's heard that gorillas aren't that intelligent, tries it on and says, "That will be $20".

The gorilla puts a $20 bill on the bar and starts to leave. The bartender says, "We don't get many gorillas in here." The gorilla replies, "At $20 a beer, I'm not surprised".

😁

upinaballoon · 29/08/2022 20:12

Itstrueiagree · 29/08/2022 20:16
