Car parked outside my house...

A parking thread!!!! No, not really.

There is a car parked outside my house and it has been there for ages. There is a weed about a foot high growing through one of the wheels so it's definitely been there all summer if not longer.

I'm not a believer in the space outside my house being mine as the road has a lot of residents and the lady next door has a baby so usually I park up the road but this one is annoying me now!

I looked it up on the DVLA website and the tax expires on 1st September so obviously it's legally entitled to be there until that date. Is there anything I can do about it after 1st Sept?

It needs to be insured and MOT'd too if it's on a public road

Both can be checked online

Frazzled2207 · 29/08/2022 16:21

Yeah I’d check if it is insured.
if it’s not I’d call the local police non emergency number.
our local police tweeted today that they had towed away a non insured vehicle that had been parked somewhere for ages so they def do sometimes act!

KindergartenKop · 29/08/2022 16:25

It's MOTd but I don't know where to check insurance.

JudithHarper · 29/08/2022 16:27

askmid.com to check the insurance

jtravis1 · 29/08/2022 16:32

Well if its not taxed, then the authorities can clamp and tow it away.

KindergartenKop · 29/08/2022 16:32

I searched the website and it says you are committing an offence if you're searching for the insurance status of a car unless it's yours/an employer's/you work for insurance.

I doubt that The Sweeney are going to smash your door down if you check a car that is not yours.

Yes as above report to the council as abandoned. I had to do this recently to a car parked outside my house for months. The council came next day and stuck a notice on the windscreen and then I’m assuming because no one got in touch they had a tow company come and pick it up a few weeks later :)

IcedOatLatte · 29/08/2022 17:13

You can report online via the Gov.uk website I think

Surtsey · 29/08/2022 17:15

Agree with others, report it to the council.

Lulibee · 29/08/2022 17:15

teport to the council as abandoned, you’ll find it is removed sharpish - usually by the owner. I had to do this a few times a few years ago, same culprits, neighbour thinking he could get allow his mates to leave their large vans in a residential parking bay for 4 cars. Was amusing watching people turn up to move them.

DoverWight · 29/08/2022 17:25

The council are unlikely to act until the tax & mot are expired, but once that happens do report as an abandoned vehicle.

MyCatsSlave · 29/08/2022 17:37

You can report it to the council as an Abandoned Vehicle once the Tax has expired. A vehicle does not need to be insured or have a valid MOT to be parked on the highway, they are just needed to drive on the highway.
The Abandoned Vehicle process starts with a 7 day notice to owner being put on the car. In reality though it’s normally 10 days before the officer returns to see if the vehicle is still there. If the vehicle is claimed by an owner the abandoned vehicle process is stopped and if there is still no valid tax then it will be referred to DVLA. If no one claims it and it’s still there after the 10 days, then the case can be sent to the scrapyard to have the car lifted.

Thank you!

Wrong!

From the CAB:

"You must also have insurance if you leave it parked on the street, on your driveway or in your garage."

A vehicle MUST be insured in order to be parked on a public road given there is still a risk of accidents. Even with a stationary parked vehicle.

Insurance is NOT just for driving purposes.

We once had a car parked outside our house for ages and ages.

It turns out it was a women fleeing domestic violence. She was staying with her mum who lived 5 mins away but didn’t want her car parked outside her mums house. I felt terrible for being annoyed.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/08/2022 22:39

Report to the council as an abandoned vehicle. They will eventually tow it away.

Swannning · 29/08/2022 22:44

My car was stolen and abandoned, the insurance company paid out and then several weeks later I got a call from the police to say that someone had reported that my car was outside their house and hadn't moved for months - it could be something like that?

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 29/08/2022 22:46

Why do you sound unsure? If it was parked outside your house for so long, you must know? If it's abandoned, report it as pp says.

LimboLass · 29/08/2022 22:51

Is there anything I can do about it after 1st Sept

Trim the weed. Might as well make it look presentable.

AdobeWanKenobi · 29/08/2022 23:02

Good luck getting anything done tbh

up the road from me is a parked a car. It’s there almost every evening but does come and go. It’s never had any tax, mot or insurance in the 18 months it’s been there. It’s driven by several people and always has new damage appear so it’s been involved in a few accidents.
It’s clearly some kind of pool car for the local dealers.
The police tell me unless they see it moving they can do nothing. The DVLA don’t seem interested either. I assume when it’s involved in a serious collision they might take a little interest.

Vegay · 29/08/2022 23:12

You can check MOT and tax on the DVLA website, not insurance. You've done this I think. When the road tax runs out, the vehicle needs to be declared as SORN. It is a legal requirement to tax your vehicle or make it off statutory off the road, so if the tax runs out on the 1st Sept, phone the council. The owners are then committing an offence.

KindergartenKop · 30/08/2022 09:54

@grapehyacinthisactuallyblue I don't keep a note of exactly which car is parked outside my house every day. As I said, I usually park down the road because the lady next door has small kids to get in and out so I leave the space for her. Road has lots of flats on so there's a variety of cars parking along here.

I used this to report an abandoned vehicle. Use for fly tipping, overflowing litter bins etc. www.fixmystreet.com
