CF sitting in our reserved seats

We made them move, obviously, but now I'm getting death stares off one of them while they stand in the gangway of the rammed train. Apparently, they didn't think seat reservations were a "thing"

Awkward, long journey ahead!

Last time this happened to me, it was two of them, they moved the reservation cards and the guard didn't want to know. Nothing I could do about it.

how long ago did you last travel? also from what I remember on the cards it had the seat number as well, so moving them wouldn't make a difference

God we reserved seats once as it was a really long journey. Got on the train and it was packed and someone was in our reserved seats on his laptop. We did the to find somewhere else we could sit together but there were only single spaces.
We explained to the CF and asked if he could move. He was gobsmacked we had dared asked him to move. He wouldn't And said for us to sit somewhere else.

A member of staff came to ask if there was a problem so we explained we had reserved the seats. She said we were being very unfair asking him to move, especially as he'd already opened his laptop!! And she asked us to sit somewhere else even though we'd reserved them.

I was fuming. She then asked him to move but gave him a free drink and snacks for the 'inconvenience'!

We had this on our flight home on Saturday, the couple had pre booked seats but mistakenly got the wrong ones and were sat in ours.
The stewardess asked if we wanted their seats - no thanks I’ve prepaid and want mine. Thank god I did as we had a spare seat and could spread out.

I am in the camp who think it's absolutely daft to complain about people sitting in reserved seats (so what if they had tea or whatever? So long as they move, they're being sensible).

But frankly I would have been amused rather than annoyed by someone being pissy about moving. I used to bloody love it when I commuted regularly and there seemed always to be some pompous man insisting he needed the charge socket to work. Yes, and so do I, and I booked the seat with it. Smile

I think there ought to be a long German word for the perverse pleasure of being righteously smug when someone else has been mildly dickish.

There isn't'one? If not, the Germans are really falling down on the job!

Avanti West Coast have been shite with their reservations this month following the cancellation of some serviced.

Travelled to London last Tuesday in seats booked in June. 3 people came up and said we were in their seats. 1 was a bit of a knob and insisted he needed the table for the sockets (there's sockets by the other seats mate). The other 2 were fine and acknowledged it was an avanti fuck up.

Got knows what the return journey will be like on Wednesday.

You were actually in the wrong! Avanti re-did all timetables for august in august at very blaming 'unofficial strike action' - and announced that all reservations made on trains booked prior to august were invalid. They then issued new reservations to people travelling on ticketd bought in august on the new timetable. That means there are frequently two sets of people booked in the same seats on the same train.. Your seats were booked in June and were therefore no longer valid.
avanti to blame. They are a shockingly short company.

Well that's useful to know, but they did not tell us any of this. The only advice we were given in an email was to check that our booked services were running, and if they weren't, we could use either the service before or the service after. And given that the original services were running its not a great leap that our original reservation is still valid.

GrunkleStan · 31/08/2022 08:54

@Notfancyfree

Nothing in this email to indicate that this reservation is not valid. Email sent on 9th Aug.

I was once on a train when some people sat down at a table and took the reservation tickets off the seats. A confused elderly couple got on a bit later and wondered where there reservations were. The family sat in their seats swore down that the seats weren't reserved and were quite nasty to the couple. Luckily the guard resolved it.

I was travelling yesterday and a young female had to ask a dad and his son (about 12) to move seats so she could sit in her reserved seats. The dad made a bit of a fuss- the daft thing was he and his son had reservations for the aisle seats, but they wanted the window seats (and then spent the journey with their heads in books!). The young lady was was polite but firm, and handled it really well.

im not blaming you. You were technically in the wrong but avanti has done absolutely nothing Toni form anyone about anything. The train we were in was full of arguments for exactly this reason. No one knew!

gatehouseoffleet · 05/09/2022 14:44

I thought of this thread yesterday when I came back from visiting my mum. It was chaos due to several trains being cancelled. I was lucky enough to find a available seat (hadn't reserved as only decided to travel last minute) but I thought a woman was going to try to get me to move because she'd booked my seat on a cancelled train - what's the MN moral consensus there? She didn't appear to have a disability and wasn't elderly.

But the guy behind me said he was getting out at the next station so she could have his seat. However, the woman sitting next to him wasn't very happy about allowing this woman to sit there, saying "well only if it's available". There are green lights if a seat is available!

harriethoyle · 05/09/2022 14:59

I asked a woman with her feet on a free seat if I could please sit down? She took her feet down very grumpily and her DH then barked at me "you could have said please!" When I had! Even she looked taken aback and said "she did" at which point he huffed and turned away. It was bizarre 🤷🏻‍♀️

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/09/2022 15:06

When I was a mature student, I booked a seat on the train from Crewe to London, to see my (future) dh. The seat was the forward facing window seat in a bay of four round a table, and when I got on, three people were already sitting there, including one in my window seat. I wasn’t too bothered about having the exact seat, so went to sit down on the free aisle seat, and the man in my seat snootily told me I couldn’t sit there, because they had reserved it. I replied that I had reserved a seat too, and he was sitting in it, so please could he move - and he did.

During the journey, I overheard them talking about the course they were travelling back from - which was an assertiveness course. I did wonder if I should suggest they ask for their money back, as they’d been out-asserted by a shy, unconfident student!
