Is anyone thinking of cancelling Amazon Prime due to the price increase?

I pay the yearly subscription fee so I am tied in until next year but I am thinking of cancelling.

We use the amazon music mostly so I would need to find an alternative to that. Does anyone know one that is free?

I do use next day delivery but even that is hit and miss with deliveries taking up to two days.

The TV we've found, is awful!

We have an Alexa which we use all the time so I am hoping we can still use her if we cancel!!

I cancelled mine over a year ago and I don’t miss it one bit.

I still get deliveries in good time and most are free or work out cheaper than if I had the subscription.

We pay £3.99 per month for the Alexa - can't find out what it's supposed to give us, but we can now only get it to play songs rather than "stations" if we're signed up to Prime. So, if we stick with Prime can we cancel the £3.99 charge and still get full services on the Alexa, does anyone know?

Do you have more than one Alexa speaker? IIRC, my sister had to pay £3.99 when she got a second one to be able to use two speakers for one account. I could be mistaken but I seem to remember her being annoyed it was gonna cost more money as one was a Xmas for her eldest

musicviking1 · 29/08/2022 12:13

I will be cancelling, more and more often things I want are cheaper elsewhere and are never available on next day delivery. I don't use the music as I prefer apple music and I will never ever use a cloud subscription to store my photos anymore as I've been stung once too ofter or held to ransom, so I use external hard drives. I hardly watch anting on amazon prime I prefer Netflix.

Deliveries (to us) are really fast and we don’t have Prime. They’ve cleverly created a myth that you need prime to get stuff quickly I think!

I agree!

I think people don’t realise what a con it is until they’ve got rid of it.

ehb102 · 29/08/2022 12:15

I did some calculations and think the benefits are worth me not having to drive into town and pay for parking, or pay for the bus.

Fifife · 29/08/2022 12:16

I was thinking of this but then LOTR is coming out so I will wait

iRun2eatCake · 29/08/2022 12:16

I really use my Prime delivery. Also l use the music for running.

Not found much success with TV/films but have screenshot @Skinnermarink suggestions.

Please send other recommendations!

I have recently discovered Amazon Household and have added my sister to it... so two households for one cost. Need to trust the other person though!

ouch321 · 29/08/2022 12:18

Mine runs out in March and won't be renewing I think. It does have lots of benefits but the price jump is too much - it's hardly like Amazon is struggling and needs to make ends meet is it.!!!!

iRun2eatCake · 29/08/2022 12:18

I don't have Netflix but do have Sky just in my bedroom though.

Disney... again share login with my sister

WildFlowerBees · 29/08/2022 12:19

I'm cancelling mine in the hopes they offer me a nice bribe to rejoin.

TheChosenTwo · 29/08/2022 12:19

I think I’m going to cancel only because after years of dh and I both paying for an annual prime membership I have very recently discovered that you can share membership in one household! I can’t actually remember how to do it but I’ll figure it out, I’m annoyed that we’ve both been paying it unnecessarily but because I made the discovery I shall cancel mine in September when up for renewal and share his 😂
never use it for the music/tv/reading stuff, only ever shopping.

TheChosenTwo · 29/08/2022 12:22

And I do get pissed off that things I want on prime (ie next day) are more expensive than waiting a few more days and getting stuff not on prime - I always thought that paying for the actual prime membership was the price inflation so that the items would just come quicker, not that they would come quicker AND ALSO be more expensive.
Not sure that makes sense but it does in my mind, essentially being charged twice for things to come next day…

FindingMeno · 29/08/2022 12:22

I'm keeping prime but may have to think about my beloved kindle unlimited.

Pemba · 29/08/2022 12:42

We used to have Prime but cancelled about 2 years ago. We can use DD's account for the deliveries, she has our address down as one of her addresses and our credit card as one of her payment options so our items are charged directly to us (previously I transferred her the money each time). DD doesn't mind and Amazon don't seem to either! She just forwards us the confirmation emails.

I do find though that now a lot of stuff marked Prime is taking more than a day to arrive, it's definitely not as good a service as it used to be. I buy less on Amazon really as it is not always the cheapest option, and I don't really want to help Jeff Bezos get even richer. And the way Amazon treat their workers, drivers and suppliers is exploitative apparently.

DD also allows us to sign in to her Prime Video, but not watched anything on there for ages, I find Netflix and Disney better.

FourTeaFallOut · 29/08/2022 12:50

I love amazon deliveries. I have a chronic illness that can see me on my arse fairly regularly and being able to get stuff the next day without going out is brilliant.

mondaytosunday · 29/08/2022 13:00

No. I watch quite a bit of the TV and the next day delivery has been great. It's worth it to me.

Calmdown14 · 29/08/2022 13:13

I'll still pay it. My nearest b&q is a 50 mile round trip (and that's a small one). The number of times we've ordered silicone sealant or screws for a project to arrive the next day and save the hassle is well worth it.

Similarly a toy shop is a 60 mile round trip so much easier to get birthday presents for kids parties etc delivered.

I use the music and TV a bit but deliveries is the main reason for us to have it

Crunchymum · 29/08/2022 13:16

How much is it increasing by? And can you only cancel just before your renewal? (Off to check what date ours renews)

Crunchymum · 29/08/2022 13:18

Oh right. I pay my subscription monthly and can see its going up from £7.99 to £8.99 a month.

ShesNotTheMessiah · 29/08/2022 13:20

Ours just renewed for a year but we also have multiple subscriptions and I think we'll just pay monthly from now on - choosing one or two for a couple of months and watching what we want to see, then switching to another couple for different content - and so on.

DeePlume · 29/08/2022 13:27

I cancelled mine age ago and haven't missed it! It makes you actully think about what your buying more.

NewerCurtains · 29/08/2022 13:35

Hi OP
Yes, Alexa will still work without Prime.

Couple of thoughts! Add up how much you save each year on postage and see if it balances out?

Also, could you share Prime with another family member? I am linked to my brother's account. He pays for it but I'd be happy to go halves if he asked me to.

I use Spotify for music. It's £9.99 a month for ad free but there is a free version with ads. I also cancelled Netflix as I got bored with it but recently signed up for Discovery + for £3.99 a month. If you like reality TV, murder documentaries and lifestyle stuff, it's brilliant.

allsogreen · 29/08/2022 14:11

mine is due to renew in March so think I will be cancelling. I use the delivery a lot and have had it for years , but tbh will just use the free delivery option as I rarely actually need something the next day. And as others have said it will definitely make me think more about what Im buying and help to reduce my purchases. I wont miss anything alse about it tbh.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 29/08/2022 17:44

I want to cancel but DH says there is a programme on there he wants to watch

Grantanow · 29/08/2022 18:07

It's still good value for next day delivery here in rural Zummerzet and for some video streaming. Never use sounds and rarely kindle as we prefer real books.
