Party bag tat

Hiya,

I'm I'm the process of planning two birthday parties. Currently thinking about what to put in the party bags, but honestly I'm sick of party bag tat.

I would usually put in a couple of toys to match the theme, a book, a balloon, some playdoh, bubbles, maybe some stickers, then some sweets/oaty bars/raisins and crisps .

But the apart from the one year I got some really lovely superhero teddy bears, I think the toys are always rubbish/never last and at this point we probably have 20-30 bubble wands of varying shapes and sizes from different parties.

So I'm on the hunt for some new ideas.

Is there anything your kids have ever received that you (and ideally they) have been really pleased with and/or they've actually kept for a decent amount of time (more than 2/3 days at least. Lol)?

For context, the parties are for a 4 year old (Power Rangers) and a 6 year old (Pokemon).

Go to the works and buy each child a book, cheaper than party bag tat after you add it all up. Or a very small craft set.

TenThousandSpoons · 29/08/2022 09:03

I just do sweets.

treaclepumpkin · 29/08/2022 09:03

@DarlingDarwin Yes, I'll definitely still do the book - Love the 10 for £10 at The Works. But it's the other things I'm trying to change.

That said, I like the idea of some sort of craft set - thank you.

My children have always been happy with a sweet cone/bag from the parties they have been to.

Hedonism · 29/08/2022 09:06

Pokémon cards for the 6yo? They are £££ if you buy the individual packs from the supermarket or the entertainer or wherever, but my DS just got a job lot from eBay for about a fiver.

clary · 29/08/2022 09:07

One of my kids has an April birthday so I started just giving out an Easter egg. Everyone was happy. Helpful.huh!

Your bags sound lavish op - other than Easter boy I usually gave a book and a piece of cake. How about wild flower seeds or cress seeds?

Mumdiva99 · 29/08/2022 09:07

A book and piece of cake is plenty.

clary · 29/08/2022 09:08

Ooh yes to pokemon cards - I once gave Match Attax cards for a football party which were a hit I believe.

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 29/08/2022 09:12

We have out the Pokémon official guide at our DS's party last year and it went down a storm.

Think I'll pinch the Pokémon cards idea this time!

Tallulasdancingshoes · 29/08/2022 09:15

I think sweet cones are the way to go. I hate all the plastic tat too. I hate mess, and things everywhere so after a few days it ends up in the bin which is a waste and terrible for the environment.

treaclepumpkin · 29/08/2022 09:16

Yes, I'm starting to think I need to cut down the contents anyway. Considering inflation and all that.

I have bought 200 Pokémon cards for like £15 on Facebook Marketplace- was planning to use them as a sort of table confetti. But I like the party bag idea. I could still give each kid a couple and leave some around for decor that they could take home at the end too.

Though I wish I'd started this thread before ordering personalised party boxes. Because I feel like I need to fill them now and really I think I could have gotten away with Pokémon cards, some sweets and a book. Perhaps I'll just put the sweets and cards in the box and then add the cake (once cut) to fill it out a bit... Unless I can find a decent little craft kit or something

Just give a selection of sweets and maybe a kinder egg...

Beautiful3 · 29/08/2022 09:22

Sweet cones are fabulous, or even a book.

sittingonacornflake · 29/08/2022 09:53

I've been eyeing up these, has anyone had any experience of them?

inappropriateraspberry · 29/08/2022 09:55

I'd do all you do just without the toy. There's still plenty for them to enjoy.

WishDragon · 29/08/2022 10:00

Pokémon cards.
Get a job lot of ‘pokeballs’ from amazon, my kids friends loved them! They’re often on offer.
Small lego sets.
Pop-it’s.
Bakugan. Again you can get a lot of them cheaper in bulk.
That and a small bag of haribo and some birthday cake is all you need.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 29/08/2022 10:02

I do a sweet cone and a piece of cake in a cake box

CakeCrumbs44 · 29/08/2022 10:02

I just wouldnt bother. Piece of cake and some haribo in a party bag would be fine. Unless you want to spend a fortune, and even then you're not guaranteed that every child will like it.

Immeltinnnnngggg · 29/08/2022 10:06

A magazine each?

JamieFrasersBigSwingingKilt · 29/08/2022 10:07

Craft kits from Baker Ross or Hobbycraft. Or a paint pallettes. Bought palettes from the pound shop. Bargain!

ThreeRingCircus · 29/08/2022 10:12

I hate all the plastic tat that goes into party bags, a few of DD's friends have just done sweet cones and I think that's perfect. Other non plastic ideas could be:

Packet of crayons/notebook
Sachet of hot chocolate
Wildflower seeds
Temporary tattoos
Small packet of biscuits (you can get mini party rings or mini Maryland cookies that always seem to go down well.)
Bamboo cup
Lots of ideas on Rex London site

KosherDill · 29/08/2022 10:12

This is all so bad for the environment.

Crap that probably never gets looked at again.

Why not start a "no bag" trend?

pumpkinpie01 · 29/08/2022 10:12

I get those packs of milkshake straws , about 40p , a biscuit /cake mix .B&M have some good stuff

floppybit · 29/08/2022 10:15

Don't waste your money on bits of tat, even the craft kits probably won't get used and will end up in the bin. Just stick with sweets and cake

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/08/2022 10:17

Sun flower/cress seeds
