Neighbour refused to take in a parcel

Obviously it's their right to refuse, but I'm a bit miffed! We've been neighbours for 10 years, and they have taken in parcels for us in the past, as have we for them, although as they are retired and we both (were) working outside the home they've done it more than we have iyswim.

Since lockdown we're home 95% of the time so they've not needed to take one for us for a while. Today we were out for 2 hours, and during that time a small (a4ish size if that's at all relevant) parcel turned up from amazon. The neighbours refused to take it. I only know as the next neighbour along took it and the delivery driver told them.

I know there's bigger problems etc, but I feel... slightly annoyed and unsettled by it! It seems like a really petty thing to do, ans now I'm worried we've unknowingly upset them in some way. Obviously I'm not going to make an issue of it, but wtf?

@FishFingerSandwiches4Tea I would perhaps have a conversation with you neigh our who allegedly refused the parcel. In my experience of the useless evri/yodel/amazon drivers that deliver round me they have probably not bothered to even knock next door or not waited long enough for someone to answer and then made up a reason to have knocked on the next neighbour up.

There is a shop 2 doors up from me. It is only open for a fee hours a day from 9 til 2. I never see them but it is easier to leave it there if a parcel comes as its open than open next doors gate and knock there.

My elderly mum will no longer take in parcels. She is worried about covid on the parcels.

Seraphina1993 · 29/08/2022 15:09

You might not be the only people they take parcels in for and they might be sick of it.

We were the default parcel neighbour once. We ended up with 2 giant radiator cover boxes taking up our small hallway for a week as they had gone on holiday :/

The worst people are the ones who don't come to collect for days and you have to go round and they are all in, tv on and everything.

When I have a parcel I come and get it asap as long as it's sociable hours

There should be short time windows for deliveries, so this is not often needed.

FishFingerSandwiches4Tea · 29/08/2022 15:46

Thanks all, these replies have given me food for thought. I'm astonished at some of the CFery some of you have experienced - ordering furniture to be delivered while on holiday?? 😲 As has been said, there could be any number of reasons for their change in stance and may well be nothing to do with us personally. I've taken steps to avoid them being bothered again, so that'll be the end of it. No point dwelling!

I refuse to take in parcels ….. for any neighbors I don’t like 😂
I take in parcels for anyone I do like.

I had to tell my Gran not to take anymore in because she took one in and got so stressed in the process. Sat at the window waiting for the neighbours all day and when they arrived she jumped up instantly to give it to them and fell over the lip of the doorway. A saved trip to the DPD depot is not worth and A&E trip and a broken bone.

Annoyingly they always come the second I step out to do the 10 minute school run. Thankfully the Amazon driver and I are on a first name basis so he mostly just leaves them for me at the door.

Aww your poor gran. My Nan used to be like that.

Id have no luck with the Amazon drivers around here though. Iv never seen the same one twice! But they just leave it by the door / in my unused & clean food waste bin 😂

@FishFingerSandwiches4Tea Great update. Glad you’re seeing it differently now.

Banana2079 · 31/08/2022 23:02

Maybe they don’t want to take in parcels anymore, and it’s nothing personal..it becomes cumbersome after a while as you feel you can’t go out because your neighbour is going to want to get their parcel

I was constantly taking in my neighbours parcels and was forever texting back n forth suitable times for them to collect because I’m out a lot , it can be annoying

There are bigger things to think about than your neighbour not taking in ur parcel lol , maybe driver got it wrong , who knows .. stop thinking about it

Noodles1234 · 31/08/2022 23:02

Don’t fret about it, I’ve had to ask the driver to knock next door for varied reasons (would be classed as a refusal).

Next door but one used to have 20+ boxes of Slimming World stuff delivered every week as she was a rep. I said no after a few weeks as it was ridiculous...she went mental with me that I was ruining her career, the food they had left would be damaged, the parcels would get wet etc etc 🤯

niugboo · 01/09/2022 20:06

Nice try changing the narrative. There was a vague mention about being concerned you had upset them but your primary issue was that they said no. There could be many many issues, mobility makes it harder to answer and they don’t want to be getting up and down. Or maybe they’re ill. Planning a nap. Going out. There are many many reasons they may have said no.

Woah!!! So entitled.

purplehair1 · 02/09/2022 23:42

It could be they were going away and knew they wouldn’t be around to give you your parcel? I always try and believe the best.
