If you were Andy in Devil Wears Prada

I don't know how old she is supposed to be in the film, but she's young. Just watched the scene where she had to attend the benefit because Emily was sick so Miranda wanted both assistants. Andy is late home for her boyfriends birthday, as in she missed it.

On paper it looks awful.. girlfriend puts work first and missed boyfriends birthday. However... he knows why she is doing the job, to progress to do what she really wants to do in the future which means in the mean time, she needs to suck it up and do as she's told in the job she has. Let's face it, any job we really want in the future usually involves much of what we don't want to be doing for a period of time.

Anyway, I just hate the scene where she arrives home feeling guilty as anything, after turning down an invite to meet people whom might be important to her ongoing career, to Nate, who is sat there having stayed up until she got home, to look at her, make her feel even more guilty and just say "I'm going to bed.."

If that were my young dd I'd be encouraging her to do what she needs to do to further her career and reach for the stars. Not be made to feel guilty by a boyfriend who isn't happy for her to be going forwards.

I'm glad Andy and Nate didn't get back together in the end.

Nate is awful , so unsupportive of her job and of her in general. He's a bad man ,,

He actually gave me the creeps in that film.

Moaningturtle1 · 30/08/2022 09:36

Well this thread made me start watching it again! (It’s on prime)

I love Stanley Tucci in it.

Also loving the mid 2000s fashion! Andy would be my age now.

Hoppinggreen · 30/08/2022 09:38

Oh thank God!
I thought I was the only person in the world that thought Nate was a whiny, jealous, career sabotaging little bitch.

CornishGem1975 · 30/08/2022 09:59

I love Stanley Tucci in it.

Me too @Moaningturtle1 but I love him in everything.

Fun fact, he's married to Emily Blunt's sister, whom he met at Emily's wedding 😀

Navigatingnewwaters · 30/08/2022 10:02

He acts like a dick but the implication at the end is they do get back together

PuppyMonkey · 30/08/2022 10:12

Going to be watching this film tonight now, thanks all. Grin

A lot of people thought this skit about boyfriends in rom-coms reminded them of Nate!

But in the beginning she's moaning about the girls that work at the magazine and looking down on them, them she quickly morphs into one of them, spending all her time at work being given the run around by her boss - she changes beyond recognition and her friends and boyfriend are worried about her. Wouldn't you be worried if you saw your friend change absolutely everything about herself to fit into somewhere she didn't really want to be in the first place?

People change, and more often than not the issue isn’t who they’ve changed into, but us not liking them no longer fitting into our definitions of who they should be.

Nate was a complete arse, and I was so disappointed with Andy when she decided to get back together with him. She deserved so much better.

6coffeesbefore9am · 30/08/2022 13:24

I always hated Nate. And her friends. Tall poppy syndrome.

Rosewaterblossom · 30/08/2022 20:52

Andy in some ways changed for the better. She turned up as a fairly frumpy dresser, quite plain and easily overlooked despite being very clever. The job gave her confidence and highlighted her great organisation and problem solving skills. Something which would never have been showcased had she been a low key writer in the back room of some crappy newspaper.

Read the book

felulageller · 03/09/2022 18:50

The work do could only be done that night. A birthday can be celebrated any date close to the day. Dont most people have to adjust their birthday parties like this?

He was a spolied brat and I hate him and the blonde man in the film.

She didn't go back to Nate. They met up in the coffee shop in the end where she tells him she has a job interview and he tells her he has gotten a job elsewhere, then they go their separate ways which is where Andy sees Miranda across the street.

Er, no, OP, it's pretty clear they get back together. You need to re-watch their last scene.

Just watching it on +1.

Summertimesadnesss · 03/09/2022 21:01

if Andy posted here I feel the response would be 80%+ LTB

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/09/2022 21:10

I'm watching it right now and am feeling sorry for Nate.

They definitely get back together at the end

Something which would never have been showcased had she been a low key writer in the back room of some crappy newspaper.

In the film she only got the confidence to shine in her job after she had her makeover. The job didn't give her the confidence. Her solution to Miranda pushing her was to get her hair done and put a designer dress on. Then she started to succeed. Thus reiterating the idea that as a woman, you have to look a certain way - Andy would never have been successful without the makeover because what you look like is way more important than what you can do. This isn't at all based on her skill or ambition as a writer or what she can actually do.

Which is weird, because Miranda takes her on because she isn't the same as the other girls - so the story would have been much more powerful if she had achieved everything she did without having the makeover.

She only started to shine at the job when she stopped thinking of the fashion business as beneath her. She looked down on the Runway staff and was as guilty as any of them of considering herself superior, which is pointed out to her so succinctly by Miranda and then Nigel. Once she realised that fashion is not just a nonsense, she stopped rolling her eyes multiple times a day and intentionally dressing in an anti-fashion, too-smart-for-this style.

Lol. Thought of this thread last night when it was on!

averageavocado · 30/08/2022 07:20

It annoyed me too, ffs she knows the job with miranda is a stepping-stone to where she wants to be, they know that

Wankers

This is what annoys me about her in the film, she wants to be a journalist and acting like the job is just something she 'has' to do and it's so beneath her. I have zero interest in fashion but if I was an aspiring journalist and I found myself in a position working at Vogue for Anna Wintour I would recognise that it was a huge fucking deal even if I didn't actually like the job itself.
