How to keep cats our of my garden?

Amandasummers · 27/08/2022 08:37

Are there any prevention methods? There's so many cats round here, I'm not moaning about neighbours keeping them in, they can't, that's fine, but they seem to prefer my garden to any of there bloody own and it's driving me absolutely round the bend!

My neighbour has one of those noise things that activate on movement. The local cats just saunter past it !
Id get a super soaker and dissuade them from entering your garden.

MadameMinimes · 27/08/2022 08:44

Cats are contrary little fuckers by nature. Every time you see them just act like you’re really pleased to see them and they choose somewhere else just to spite you. Grin

Buy a dog.

I've got spikes on the fence they used to climb over to get in. I told the neighbour they had a month to come up with an alternative. They suggested nothing. It works fine. Much better than the sonic noise machine.

Buy a dog.

I came on to say that! Haven't had any cats in ours since we got the puppy.

Soak them with water.

We were having so many cats using our back garden as their litter tray I tried all sorts. I now do have a few of those sonic sound things in the back garden - I still see the odd cat wandering through but it seems to have put them off lingering too long to poo there. I turn them off when we’re in the garden.

Very easily when they poo all over your garden, rendering it unsafe for your own children and scratch said children. I hate cats now. I used to like them, actually had one, but cats vs my DC? I would happily ban them.

MeridasMum · 27/08/2022 09:22

My friend swears by filling a 2-litre lemonade bottle with water (peel the label off) and she dots them around her garden. Apparently cats are scared of them.

And it just occurred to me, they're scared of cucumbers (or snake-like things). How about a few plastic snakes?

Newfluff · 27/08/2022 09:24

Buy a cat carrier take the carrier to the vet to prime it and then try and get the cat inside.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2022 09:28

I have 2 cats , I had a cat in the 1990s

Im between that time I had guinea-pigs .
So I know what a pain in the arse cars can be and rhere have been times I didnt want visitor cats (due to the piggies)

I told my NDNs if they didn't want my cats in their garden to throw water .
Providing you don't aim at their face , a well thrown cup/jug water will scare but not harm them

I'm guessing you want to move them but not harm?

And - my cats use a tray indoors , they run inside to pee/poo (evcept once MaleCat used a plant pot while he eyeballed me Shock )
So I am pretty sure the shit out there isn't theirs

Amandasummers · 27/08/2022 09:32

@meltingsocks because I dont like cats, I choose to not have pets, its not just one randomly loitering every now and again, it's several, all the time, and they do their business all over my garden resulting in me having to check the damn thing constantly so my choldrwn can go out there and I don't enjoy spending my time clearing up cat mess constantly when I don't even own a bloody cat!

They poo on the lawn.... it's foul.

Can't say that for sure....

KangarooKenny · 27/08/2022 09:37

I was told that when they poo on your lawn they are marking their territory, so I removed it and put some of my dog poo there instead. It never did it again.

Veryverycalmnow · 27/08/2022 09:38

I think you can buy Lion poo. I'm pretty sure I'm not making this up. I think it's inoffensive to humans- dried up/ powder you can sprinkle on and 'mark territory' so cats stay away.

ultraviolet4753 · 27/08/2022 09:43

Cats hate citrus and lemon scents, you could sprays some around your fences, paths? I use a diluted eucalyptus and limonene spray on furniture to stop them scratching, has always worked. Never aim towards them though, it would harm them obviously, purely for the areas to put them off.

There's also the green rock things that are supposed to work.

I would not use those ultrasonic things, as would affect squirrels and birds we have visiting.

Houseplantmad · 27/08/2022 09:47

Sprinkle cayenne pepper around liberally. You’ll need to redo it when it rains though until they get the message.

ThreeBrittany · 27/08/2022 10:04

We have the same issue. Several neighbourhood cats using our lawns as giant litter trays 🤢 We have to check our grassed areas several times a day before letting our children use the garden. It stinks 🤮

The worst part is that some of the 'business' is so liquid and sloppy that there is no way of removing it so we have no choice but to literally dig and remove the grass underneath it.

We've spent so much on poop bags, shovels, antibacterial spray, wipes etc. It's a real pain.

We have tried almost every deterrent on the market including the sonic noise machines but they haven't helped.

I've now taken to making a concoction of hot chili powder, cayenne pepper and cinnamon to sprinkle on the grass and on the fences in the evenings🤞

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/08/2022 10:10

My DM used to have a cat frequently lurking under a particular shrub, in the hope of catching the birds she encouraged.,

Soaking the (usually bone dry) ground underneath was an effective ploy, ditto spreading snipped-up prickly prunings from e.g. roses or pyracantha.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 27/08/2022 10:11

Move to Northern Ireland. I live in a fairly built up area and have seen several cats sauntering across my garden and even having a drink in the bird bath! I've never found cat poo in my grassed area, literally never. It's obviously the gift of living in NI...that and no snakes obviously. Maybe it was an add-on from St Patrick? Drive out the snakes and no cat shit in neighbouring gardens? Grin

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 27/08/2022 10:12

The only thing that worked for my mum was having one of those things that makes noise

Although my neighbour has added some plastic spikes to his fence which seem to be deterring mine from going in his garden.

I have a dog and 2 cats, we still get other cats coming in so having them yourself doesn't always work!

This would work on my wandering cat 🤣

It does piss me right off that dog owners (rightly) have to pick up after their dogs, but cats can just shit anywhere and no one picks it up.
