How to keep cats our of my garden?

Amandasummers · 27/08/2022 08:37

Are there any prevention methods? There's so many cats round here, I'm not moaning about neighbours keeping them in, they can't, that's fine, but they seem to prefer my garden to any of there bloody own and it's driving me absolutely round the bend!

It's an unappetizing solution, but I'm sure I've read on these threads before that if you can encourage your DH or any other adult male humans you're friendly with, to urinate around the edge of your garden, it puts cats off visiting. It might be best if they wee into a bottle indoors and then empty the bottle around the garden, to avoid upsetting your neighbours.

Pavlova31 · 27/08/2022 10:40

Got a problem with one cat atm. Not poo but sprays (stinks) all over the garden furniture or if I'm sat there has a long wee right nearby 🤮
Water pistol / citrus ideas have no effect. Think I will give the Lion poo a go 🤔

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/08/2022 11:41

Orange pee is supposed to deter them and it isn't harmful like chilli or cayenne (can get in their eyes oingested if they clean their paws )

Can't say that for sure ....

I am pretty sure , I know how much waste is in the trays and I know which cat did each ( the boy is a burrier the girl leaves it uncovered )

I know people who say "Oh I'd never have a tray indoors , cats go outside " are expecting their cats to soil somewhere outside .

IceandIndigo · 27/08/2022 11:51

I have the same problem and have yet to find anything that works. The electronic scarers have not worked for us as the cats seem to just get used to them. I've also tried putting lots of sticks/branches in flower beds to create a physical barrier but it looks pretty ugly and the cats just squeeze around them. You can get various products that are supposed to deter through strong smells (or DIY solutions like orange peel) but effectiveness is limited IMO and you need to keep applying them.

Please don't soak my cat with water 😿 he is rather lovely and probably just wants to say hello.

Meltingsocks · 27/08/2022 12:23

Cats bury their mess. And their poo isn't harmful to DC.

Honestly, humans think we own this planet. We don't. Other species have rights. Cats have the right to roam.

Onlyaprawninwhitby · 27/08/2022 12:26

I like cats, but not the poo in my garden. We have a dog, but the cats aren't concerned with her. Now when I see a cat, I chase it. They still come in the garden, but don't poo and run at the sound of the back door opening. They obviously don't feel relaxed enough in my garden anymore.

I've got spikes on the fence they used to climb over to get in. I told the neighbour they had a month to come up with an alternative. They suggested nothing. It works fine. Much better than the sonic noise machine.

Does this really work?? It would be great if it did as I have small bantam chickens I would like to free range in my garden but terrified the hundreds of cats in my neighbourhood will kill them.

Just to be contrary, couldn't the same argument be used to counter point?
"Humans think we own this planet. We don't. Other species have rights. Humans can't just buy pets because they want them, allow them to roam and kill the local wildlife."

I'm sick of the fuckers around me. Can't open a door or window as they get in and piss everywhere, dds bed had to be replaced as 2 pissed in it, a 6k sn bed destroyed!!!!

Nd has 6 cats, other side 4. They shit in my garden, so I can't use it, they try to Bury it but they're shite at doing that, so all they do is leave a big fucking hole with the shit on top!!!

I've tried everything, every spray know to human, every deterrent on the Internet, the more I spray them and the more stuff I put down the more they come in. The fuckers always have half dead birds, Nd has a 'special' table set up in her garden to catch the birds so her cats can get them.

I was told to get an air horn so I'm looking them up, hopefully that works.

Please don't soak my cat with water 😿 he is rather lovely and probably just wants to say hello.

But you have to appreciate that not everyone wants to say hello to your cat. Some people are allergic, or scared, or just don't want your cat on their property.

If you choose to let him out to roam unsupervised, you take the risk that people are going to do things to get him off their lawn and out of their garden.

Spraying him with water is hardly going to traumatise him, and I say that as someone with three cats.

Please keep your cat away from me and my garden. I do not want to say hello, I do not want it in my garden. I do not think it is lovely, I think it is a pest and has no right to trespass or to use my garden as a toilet.

This tyoe of sprayer works very well for me, though you do have to attach your garden hose to it. Had mine in situ for about 2 weeks and cats not pooping on my lawn for at least 2 months even though i have disconnected it. It occasionally got the postie, the window cleaner and me 🤣

I think you can buy Lion poo. I'm pretty sure I'm not making this up. I think it's inoffensive to humans- dried up/ powder you can sprinkle on and 'mark territory' so cats stay away.

One of my previous cats was a total soppy cat but he was being bullied by a couple of local male cats to the extent he couldn't come into the back yard due to the intruders.

I tried all sorts for him but then a friend told me that I needed to show the other cats that " there was a bigger buck around".

My next question was how? This led to an awkward conversation with several of my male friends (needs to be adults) asking them to save me several days worth of urine in milk jugs. This was then left to sit in the shed for several days to ferment.

So for a week I went outside morning and evening and poured strong male urine around the boundary of the back yard, I thought this was bonkers but after the week the intruding cats would run up to the boundary but no further, leading to my soft fluff ball being able to come home safely as there was a bigger buck to deal with, he knew the scents of my friends and that they weren't a threat to him so could come past safely.

This might keep the males out of the garden as for the females they just don't give a damn and will eyeball you as they do their business so no help there.

Can humans get toxoplasmosis from cats?
People can be infected by: Accidental ingestion of oocysts after cleaning a cat's litter box when the cat has shed Toxoplasma in its feces. Accidental ingestion of oocysts after touching or ingesting anything that has come into contact with a cat's feces that contain Toxoplasma.

Get a sighthound. Any cat stupid enough to enter our garden is likely to lose all 9 of its lives!

Moonface123 · 27/08/2022 16:04

l have the opposite problem, my neighbour actively encourages my cats into her house and feeds them, she acts like my cats are her cats, its bloody annoying.

InsertPunHere · 27/08/2022 16:10

@MissVantaBlack - It's not effective against our local cats. I can say that for sure because DH and both DS have been going outside to pee to discourage foxes for ages on the basis of that advice. Cats turn up anyway.

(mostly so do foxes - I think it's like keeping a banana in your ear to deter the crocodiles)

Learn to appreciate the visits from these superior beings, much easier than fighting i

(Seriously how is it possible to be annoyed by a cat in an outdoor space?)

Disclaimer, I love animals (I've owned cats in the past, but wouldn't again) however there's a few reasons why I don't want them in my garden.

  1. I've spent a long time making the garden bird friendly, feeders, water bath etc. It's wonderful to see them. In my previous house the neighbours got two cats and my garden was instantly deserted of birds.
  1. They crap in the garden.
  1. I'm incredibly fortunate to have hedgehogs visiting and I leave food out for them (cat biscuits/ wet cat food) and of course I've had to cat proof it. Also, I can only have predator proof nesting boxes.

In summary any attempts to make your garden wildlife friendly is destroyed by cats.

There's no guarantee of that!

A friend of mine has two sighthounds that live happily with three cats, rabbits and Guinea pigs! 😂

That is true, but the vast majority are extremely unsafe for cats and that’s very effective I’ve found.

Amandasummers · 28/08/2022 09:51

@meltingsocks I can assure you, they do not bury it. Harmful or not, I don't want to keep cleaning it out of their shoes, or having it walked in my house, of the children having it on them in any way shape or form just because it's "not harmful"

What a bizarre comment lol

I did think about the the high pitched sound thing but I walk past a house that has one and the noise drives me up the wall so I couldn't do that. Will give the citrus thing or cayenne pepper thing a go I suppose!

A very silly generalisation. I have two cats and regular visits from starlings, goldfinches, blue tits and great tits. They love watching them visit the feeders but are too lazy to go for them.

Libre55 · 28/08/2022 21:39

A supersoaker gun works wonders. If Have spent the day planting containers up with bulbs, I don’t want the local cats digging the soil when they want a crap.I sprinkle chilli powder on top after I have finished planting my bulbs in the garden.
