Oh well,

They can bloody get in queue for the sake of 580 quid.

Nice loud scary knock... BANG BANG BANG - how they think that will get a reasonable response I don't know 🙄

Luckily these things don't scare me, if I haven't got, they can't have it.

However I do really feel for those not wanting to have bad credit report, or have a mortgage, or a car for instance.

Just crackers.

Not sure why posting really all getting a bit much.

Who actually knocked at the door? Were they court appointed bailiffs?

BuenoSucia · 26/08/2022 13:32

🤷‍♀️ I feel much the same way. They can’t have what I don’t have - and if I could magic £500 out of my arse I’d have paid the original bill.

but you make a very important point. You weren’t scared - of either them - or any potential ramifications. And they rely on fear. They rely on you being so scared you’ll ohone your dad and beg him to give his cc number.

credit ratings going to shit I’ve never really understood anyway. People who can AFFORD shit get offered credit. When you NEED credit you’ll not get it. So it’s all academic anyway.

Have you got a local credit union? They may be able to offer you advice. I’m sorry this has happened to you.

SunflowerDuck · 26/08/2022 13:38

What happened to get to this stage? Can you use cab or one of the debt charities to help.mediate?

BlueReindeer · 26/08/2022 13:40

I’m so sorry life has got to this stage already and you have to put up with this being brave or otherwise. No other advice but didn’t want to read and run

Stylishkidintheriot · 26/08/2022 13:40

The bailiffs for £500? I’ve not heard about baillifs going to peoples houses for years, but I’m guessing it’s going to be happening a lot.

in practical terms can you call them to try to arrange a payment plan?

Oldcottoneye · 26/08/2022 13:42

You're not going to be the only one in this situation by January.

I'm sorry for the stress you're under. I was crippled by debt I incurred from a friend about 19 years ago. I nearly broke under the pressure they put me under.
It's awful and I'm sorry that you're going through this.
Try to get some advice though as you do not want to be evicted and living on the streets.

I suspect she couldn't pay the bills?

Kerrrmieee · 26/08/2022 13:45

Ah okay - it was authorised officers of She'll (aarg!) Energy, serving notice to get a warrant to enter the property...

So... No not court appointed. Apologies.

Should read my post! (As in letters)

I have a council worker that helps me deal with things but he is on holiday for 2 weeks, so may have ranted in haste.

Thats sounds extremely stressful. It would scare me , you are clearly made of sterner stuff.
It's seems very heavy handed for £580. Have they offered any solution, repayment scheme?
We were transferred to Shell energy after my previous supplier went bust. Not impressed with them so far. Issues with our new smart meter, no fixed tariffs, I can't change supplier and they are doubling my direct debit from next month....

Kerrrmieee · 26/08/2022 13:56

Oldcottoneye · 26/08/2022 13:42

Exactly @Oldcottoneye . I really don't want to get into the long story of why it led to this, however along with life's ups and downs, when my smart meter was installed, I never received a bill or an account number to pay to - I do now!

Ah well. Worse things happen at sea.

Like Jaws.

If it's a warrant to gain entry to cut you off, you should be given a date and time and you have the right to appear and ask the Magistrates not to be cut off.

People don't usually bother but I think it has a reasonable success rate, especially if you can prove that you are in dispute with your supplier.

MichaelAndEagle · 26/08/2022 13:58

I've moved into a new place and bailiffs have been round as the previous tenant has left utility company debt. They owe about £700, so they definitely do go round.

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/08/2022 14:04

I am so sorry, good on you for not being frightened. I hope you can get it sorted once your caseworker is back.

Oh I'm not of sterner stuff at all.

I've just been there before.

I'm lucky (?) That I was homeless with my children in appointed accomodation for a year and now we have a council house.
I don't run a car.
Everything in this house is second hand.

So, I don't really have anything to lose.

I have severe MH issues and waiting on a ASD diagnoses after initial assessment (which makes sense now looking back). I have a council worker who helps me.

You know, it's almost easier for me to say - sod it, can't get blood from a stone, than it is people with a mortgage who've succeeded, because seeing Rishi not Dishy this morning he's only going to help lowest incomes and pensioners.

I know that having worked as a single parent and pulling myself off benefits that, it is the low incomes but no UC or Tax Credits that will suffer the most.

Anyway thank you for your reply. Stay strong - share my sterner stuff x

I admire your strength OP. Most people would be stressed out at this.

Surtsey · 26/08/2022 14:17

Are they allowed to cut off supply if children live at the property? Was that what they were going to do?

If you haven't had bills or a final demand, and it hasn't gone to court, then they can't have a court order to recover the debt. Speak to Citizens Advice.

stopitstopitnow · 26/08/2022 14:19

I'm assuming this doesn't apply to you OP but if I may, I'd just like to say to anyone who this might apply to:

If BSL is your first language and you get a letter from any debt recovery agency, you have the right to ask that they provide an interpreter when they visit. If they fail to do so, under the EA then they cannot enter your property or demand payment. THEY are responsible for the interpreter not (generic) you.

Hi, sounds like a pre-disconnection visit. Next step is to apply to court for warrant and then exchange your meter for pre-payment.

They can't cut you off without installing prepayment meter. Some companies don't have the facility to install prepayment meters, so they can't actually do anything to stop your supply.

It's all part of the suppliers license conditions

Thefruitbatdancer · 26/08/2022 14:25

Sorry this is happening to you op, how stressful for you and your family. While you're waiting for your case WORKER, get in touch with your local citizens advice bureau and the National autistic society (NAS). The NAS has a telephone helpline and will be able to advise you on what to do next. Same for the citizens advice bureau as well.

Also, email Radio 4's You & Yours consumer programme, they were discussing this a few weeks ago. They'd be interested in hearing about this because everyone is struggling now. What are the energy companies going to do, set baillifs like dogs on everybody?

No I'd doesn't, but worth sharing again in quote form.

Thank you for sharing

You know like a Hungarian Bograscz (sp) step dad is Hungarian... Like dig a put, and a tripod over a wood fire... I'm thinking about that in the garden. It'll be winter, windows shut, washing not out...

Oh I don't know, over thinking now 🤣😭

OP posts:
CaptainBarbosa · 26/08/2022 14:32

They are going to enter your property and fit a pre-payment meter. Meaning you'll essentially get cut off when the balance is zero.

They will also place a debt recovery amount on your meter, so say for every 10.00 you top up they will take £1 off the debt.

However.....if you ring them when you reach zero and can't top up, they will place credit on the meters and just add it to your debt, but they will only do this once or twice sadly.

It's basically the stealth way of cutting people off, and then when they are questioned they go "no it's up to the customer to top up" and absolve themselves of any responsibility 🙄
