Good luck everyone. Energy companies are criminals and Ofgem has let them become criminals!

Suppliers are not the problem and neither is OfGem, their powers are very limited and gievn to them by the GOvt.

Good idea on eco7 and batteries (if you can afford them) the night rate on eco7 is 50% less than day rate but i'm not sure suppliers will switch you to E7 now.

Just to note the day rate is higher on e7 though. Mine is about 33p instead of the current cap of 28.

It’s not as bloody simple as that is it? People are worrying about using the microwave or a kettle. You know, like normal things that we should be able to do.

What do we do, sit in the cold and use candles.

Yes we do need to pay a long term debt back. And maybe our kids will pay for it in the longer term.

But the alternative is our kids will have no future if industries and businesses shut down. And people end overwhelming the NHS , which our kids will pay for.

So either way we’re going to be paying off debt regardless. We have to think of the bear and now.

I haven’t said anything is simple. It’s far from simple. We are at war with Russia and until that is resolved this will continue.

I already pay £540, so this will increase to around £970! I'm looking into solar as most of it is electricity

Ever considered using less electricity? Just a thought.

Stop the press. Our genius LimboLass has solved the energy crisis.

From google.....
According to Ofgem, the average British household has 2.4 people living in it and uses 2,900 kWh of electricity and 12,000 kWh of gas. This works out at 242 kWh of electricity and 1,000 kWh of gas per month. Of course, this is just the average consumption for a household of between 2-3 people.

Thanks for the "average" info

Our useage last year was Gas 10500 and Electric 1854

So below average for both and we're going to make drastic cuts in use starting now.

We pay by DD for what we actually used the previous month by submitting meter readings on the last day of every month. Saving as much as possible to cover big bills Nov - Apr.

It'll be uncomfortable but doable.

I think those who are elderly or disabled need the Government to make winter fuel payments a heck of a lot larger.

Alexandra2001 · 26/08/2022 08:49

That 100 billion could be used to nationalise UK production, ensuring lower prices for years to come.
Excess production in the summer would then be sold for large profit on the global market.

The war in Ukraine may last for many more years & regardless, Putin will use gas to blackmail us long after Ukraine is a distant memory.

I am going to cancel my direct debit and wait for the bill to arrive. If I can pay it fine if I can’t they can have the amount I can afford. I am a single mother and work full time but they cannot get blood out of a stone. I am definitely not letting my daughter be cold either.

Be careful. Electricity companies will cut you off if the debt remains unpaid and put you on a pay as you go meter. Each time you top it up, an amount is deducted immediately to gradually pay off the debt.

You're right, they can't get blood out of a stone but you won't get any electricity out of them unless you're putting money in your meter. You will be without any power.

I feel your pain, we're on a prepayment meter and have one downstairs storage heater on in the winter to cut costs. I'm so concerned but refusing to pay is likely to impact people really badly. Please be aware x

I’m surprised at the naivety of don’t pay uk?
In other places in Europe unpaid bills are simply taken from your bank account if the funds are there. If the funds are not there, every bank account you hold in that country is frozen, until you pay. It can happen for bills as small as a five euros.
Surely our government will be looking at bringing in this kind of tactic soon enough?

They don't need to the energy companies can get a warrant to enter your home and put you on a pre-payment meter. Pre-payment meters are more expensive and can be set to claw back debt.

They can also go to court and get a CCJ which can be enforced by attachment of earnings, by using bailiffs to take goods to the value of the debt or by getting a charge on your property.

Don't Pay UK is irresponsible

*I’m so sick of people trotting this out.

If only it was that easy….!

Most people are using as little as they can ffs.*

You think somebody who has a predicted monthly bill off £970 is using as little as they can?

Are you for real?

We don’t know their personal circumstances.

Lots of people with disabilities and other difficulties will be high users. We are. It’s not always possible to cut down. Yes if people can, they should.

But this constant “cut down” mantra isn’t helpful. It’s beyond that now. It’s really naive to keep trotting that line out when people are genuinely frightened to use a kettle or their oven.

I can understand their frustration - it is the persistent luddite refusal to move on from fossil fuels that is trapping us in this economic situation, as well as causing climate change. We are paying through the nose to destroy our own planet. It is mental really.

All ordinary people should be calling for renewables, subsidised insulation and subsidised energy efficiency. The only people opposed to that should be oil shareholders and the Tory party.

Necessity is the mother of invention. We have very sudden needs and invention takes a while I’m afraid.

goldfinchonthelawn · 26/08/2022 08:50

Ours has gone up from £70pcm to £270 pcm. That's almost 300% rise. The vast majority of people can't begin to cope with a rise like that. We're lucky we paidf off our mortgage a couple of years ago but if we hadn't, I'd be sick with worry.

17CherryTreeLane · 26/08/2022 08:51

@LimboLass I thought the fact we'll be cutting back usage was just too obvious to need spelling out to be honest

LittleLlama · 26/08/2022 08:51

From October I am going to be in “Fuel poverty” - a person is living in fuel poverty if, to heat their home to a satisfactory standard, they need to spend more than 10 per cent of their household income on fuel. (Obviously satisfactory standard is subjective).

Fortunately it will only be until April when we receive a £6k real term increase in our income and we have savings we will have to live on until then. But gosh it is scary!

PinkButtercups · 26/08/2022 08:51

I don't get any of this I'm really bad with numbers.

When I go onto SSE app it says we use around £35 a month on electric.

Currently £344.58 in credit with electric which I'm sure will soon be 'used' somewhere.

Gas is not on the smart meter as apparently they couldn't get the part (too old) 🙄.

Currently £303.42 in credit with that.

We pay £75 each a month for them separately on a standard tariff.

Electricity tariff as it says on smart meter is 29.07 standard rate and daily standing charge of 49.100.

Does anyone know or can work out how much we'd be paying monthly roughly from October?

CurtainSchmurtain · 26/08/2022 08:52

Day rate much higher on eco7.
Fire brigades will be bracing themselves for a huge increase in call outs.
There’ll be people reopening old chimneys, not paying for chimney sweeping, drying clothes near open fires rather than tumbling, using appliances over night for cheaper rates, burning anything to keep warm, it’s going to be disastrous from a safety perspective.

My crystal ball tells me that Putin won’t be around in a couple of years. The issue will be which whack-a-mole dictator will take his place.

Govt will need to freeze bills at the current energy cap (£1900) for household incomes below, for example 40k

We are on a higher household income than that but we will also struggle with the rising energy bills too. Having to find an extra 300-500 quid a month is not doable for most families.

We all need help.

The energy bills are predictive to hit over 6k next year, are we all just going to put up with it? I hope people take to the streets.

Same here. I completely get that those on lower incomes need help. But just because we earn more (not much more though) doesn't mean we don't need some help too. Not sure how were going to afford to pay over £600 a month for our gas and electricity.

LakieLady · 26/08/2022 08:53

Any help should be targeted, people like those on MN that wash towels daily and tumble dry them for softness even in the summer should not be getting discounts that others will end up paying for

I kind of agree, but can't see how that sort of usage could be monitored without some sort of big brother type surveillance. One of my SIL's put up a washing line earlier this year for the first time in years, and she was surprised by how much her electricity usage went down. Prior to that, she just tumble dried everything, regardless of the weather!

Yes.

on another note I follow Martin Lewis on Twitter. It’s absolutely disgusting the levels of abuse he’s been getting for trying to help people. It should be aimed at those with the power to change things but instead are swanning about on Greece and Kyiv.

@Igotjelly

i agree he doesn't deserve abuse, but I do know several people who are going to be in the shit because they took his advice not to fix!

I stopped reading his page because I disagreed with him. I fixed and am bloody glad I did, when I did. One close friend is going to be massively in the shit. I tried to get him to fix, but no, Martin Lewis said not to. My friend has a business that took a thumping during covid & he gets Tax credits & HB, but he/they are just not going to be able to find the money for these new bills.

I decided I'd rather take the small risk of over paying (by fixing at that rate) than the huge risk of paying massively more. I don't understand why ML wasn't more cautious with his advice.

What a really unkind and thoughtless comment. Perhaps think about families with elderly or disabled family members who must have a heated house.

Or perhaps those who have the need for electricity to keep life supporting equipment running or charged. Or someone who relies on an electric or battery wheelchair.

Think before you post.

It's shocking. I work from home so thankfully saving on fuel for 2 cars, but we are beginning to make cuts at home. I only charge the laptop for work when it is essential. I've purchased hot water bottles, extra blankets for the bedrooms.

So am I - I feel physically sick.

And very, very angry when you read of the absolutely obscene profits the energy companies make.

Is this a permanent thing or will they drop again maybe next year? I appreciate it’s hard to predict.
But fuel prices have come down, slightly.

Nope? Just going to increase again next year😣Based on gas prices up to yesterday's market close, experts at independent energy consultancy Auxilione now think the cap will rise by another 52 per cent to £5,405 in January 2023, then by a further 34 per cent to £7,263 in April - before falling slightly, by 11 per cent to £6,485 in July and by another 7 per cent to £6,006 in October.
