No fucking idea how were expected to pay over £600 a month for gas and electricity (80% on top of what we currently pay). We just don't have it! We're only in a 3 bed semi Sad

We are not the French. They like to set fire to things when angry. We tend to passive aggress instead.

Maybe we should take a leaf from their book tbh. If nothing else, the fire will keep us warm?

I don’t think I’ve ever been as angry at the government as I am now. Johnson and Sunak and the entire Tory party ought to be in prison. Cunts, one and all.

As much as people wanted rid of Boris it was completely the wrong time. Getting rid of a PM and having a leadership contest at a time like this was unnecessary.
We now have no government intervention because no one has been there to make decisions.

He's still the PM, don't make excuses for his excreble "leadership" when he hasn't lifted a fucking finger to help people.

Surely it would also make sense for financial support to be targeted by region as well as household? My guess is it gets a lot colder in a farmhouse in the sticks in Cumbria than it does in an urban city flat in London or Bristol?

I'm in a farmhouse in the sticks and we are well set up for cold winters and no electric due to frequent power cuts.

like lots of rural areas we don't have access to mains gas so our core heat comes from wood burners which run off wood from our farmland that we spend all spring and summer collecting storing and chopping (it's what I'm going to be doing today actually). We do use a bit of oil as well for hot water heating.

Somewhere around the end of October/early Nov I will swap the curtains over from our summer ones to our winter blackout thermal ones. The thermal door curtains will all go back up onto the curtain rails above the external doors and as the temperature drops through Nov/Dec the fleecy blankets will come out of the blanket boxes in bedrooms and on to beds and sofas.

we have a wood powered Rayburn in the kitchen we can use for additional heat and cooking if needed.

in the evenings we all sit under fleecy blankets with hot water bottles and cups of tea.

we have always done that regardless of energy issues. It's only relatively recently in history that people have expected to be able to sit downstairs comfortably in just pyjamas on a winters evening.

They’re estimating 100billion pounds for the government to bail us out of this situation. You want our kids to foot the bill for this when we could all massively cut down on the energy we use?

🤦🏼‍♀️

If people cut down any more they’ll be sitting in the dark with candles and washing clothes in a bucket of cold water.

Im on the energy forum on Facebook- people ARE cutting down as much as they can, to extreme lengths and they STILL can’t afford their bills.

Its gone beyond cutting down.

xxcatcatcatxx · 26/08/2022 08:39

Just making my way through these posts and doing our estimates so apologies for cross posting. Could someone confirm if these prices are before the VAT is added as that’s an extra kick in the balls if so xxx

I honestly understand how scared, furious and worried everyone is. It’s just we’re not the French, we warred against them for centuries Our mentality was always invention and I hope to god that after the suffering some amazing g new innovation will appear.

safetyfreak · 26/08/2022 08:41

Govt will need to freeze bills at the current energy cap (£1900) for household incomes below, for example 40k

We are on a higher household income than that but we will also struggle with the rising energy bills too. Having to find an extra 300-500 quid a month is not doable for most families.

We all need help.

The energy bills are predictive to hit over 6k next year, are we all just going to put up with it? I hope people take to the streets.

Same here. I'm almost in tears watching him.

Alexandra2001 · 26/08/2022 08:42

Good luck everyone. Energy companies are criminals and Ofgem has let them become criminals!

Suppliers are not the problem and neither is OfGem, their powers are very limited and gievn to them by the GOvt.

Good idea on eco7 and batteries (if you can afford them) the night rate on eco7 is 50% less than day rate but i'm not sure suppliers will switch you to E7 now.

ofwarren · 26/08/2022 08:42

I'm going to need a post about cooking using low energy. I use my oven quite a lot.
No idea how we are going to afford this. I'm on carers allowance looking after my disabled son. My husband runs his own business but it's quite new and not really making much.

RaRaRaspoutine · 26/08/2022 08:42

"It's only relatively recently in history that people have expected to be able to sit downstairs comfortably in just pyjamas on a winters evening." Yeah it's known as "progress". Instead we're sliding backwards, exactly as the Tories want.

Parrotpretty · 26/08/2022 08:43

I'm lucky that I got a fix with bg last year until March 24. I have told my extended family that they can use my tumble dryer, oven and heating during the day if needs be. If I can cook their meals they will only need to warm them up.

That’s not what I meant.

I meant we are all upset and broken by the news.

I wasn’t referring to how much money he has. I meant the stress levels of it all.

HeartofTeFiti · 26/08/2022 08:43

I’m watching Martin Lewis, I thought he was going to cry with anger a few minutes ago. He is saying that there is no clarity whether direct debits will be set based on the new October price cap. Or the expected much higher January price cap. January, February, March are going to be horrific for people.

It’s not as bloody simple as that is it? People are worrying about using the microwave or a kettle. You know, like normal things that we should be able to do.

What do we do, sit in the cold and use candles.

Yes we do need to pay a long term debt back. And maybe our kids will pay for it in the longer term.

But the alternative is our kids will have no future if industries and businesses shut down. And people end overwhelming the NHS , which our kids will pay for.

So either way we’re going to be paying off debt regardless. We have to think of the bear and now.

Sporty2022 · 26/08/2022 08:45

Hear and now

safetyfreak · 26/08/2022 08:46

Suppliers are not the problem and neither is OfGem, their powers are very limited and gievn to them by the GOvt.

Actually Ofgem are the problem, they agreed to allow the cap to change every 3 months instead of 6. I remember Martin Lewis outrage at Ofgem at the time.

The top 1 % are profiteering from the country misery.

Im not denying there will be some that are but pretty much everyone I know is just continuing as they always did. We’ve had decades of expectation that we can wander around the house in shorts and T-shirt over winter with all the lights on, TV blaring in every room.

What I’m hoping will be announced in the government measures (and they will offer some concessions) is community warm areas that will allow a communal warm space for people to gather in the day. What we absolutely don’t want is the elderly sitting at home heating one room and dying in the night. I’m old enough to remember those news stories every winter and that’s why the winter support payment was brought in.

LimboLass · 26/08/2022 08:47

*I’m so sick of people trotting this out.

If only it was that easy….!

Most people are using as little as they can ffs.*

You think somebody who has a predicted monthly bill off £970 is using as little as they can?

Are you for real?

And those idiots are back on the M25 smashing up fuel pumps at service stations. Anti oil protests.

Do these people not realise that they are making things a lot worse?

Lorry’s delivering food and goods not being able to fill up.

Well done genius people.

I can understand their frustration - it is the persistent luddite refusal to move on from fossil fuels that is trapping us in this economic situation, as well as causing climate change. We are paying through the nose to destroy our own planet. It is mental really.

All ordinary people should be calling for renewables, subsidised insulation and subsidised energy efficiency. The only people opposed to that should be oil shareholders and the Tory party.
