Do you use the books/games in a holiday let?

Just wondering! I own a holiday property with a book case in the hall. It’s a small space, I’d like to replace the bookcase with a console table.

DH says people would miss the books.

what do you think?

I love a bookshelf in a holiday let. I particularly like it if they specify that you can take one with you as long as you leave one behind.
I also like a selection of games. We always take some with us in case there aren't any but it's much more fun to do something different

Definitely used board games in a holiday let.
Only looked at books if they are non-fiction especially if walks / history of the local area.

Is it ok if I take a book to finish at home but leave one I've finished with??! Did this once and felt bad

I love the books. Especially Danielle Steele.

Love board games in a holiday let . We played Yahtzee in our last one. DD1 even found the missing dice on the lawn which I assume the previous visitors had lost. DD1 also loves to find books. I have my kindle.

CryCeratops · 25/08/2022 21:30

I don’t really know what a console table is.

But I love browsing through the random books and games in holiday lets.

tobee · 25/08/2022 21:30

I often don't read them but love to have a good nose at the books in a holiday let.

Dd got into reading James Herriot when she was about 8 from a holiday let and loved them ever since!

The first place we stayed at after lockdown has tonnes of books and games on display in the online photos and there were none there when we arrived. Dh asked the owner what had happened to them when they were chatting. The owner said that the holiday let company had said that all of them would have to be wiped down after each let for Covid rules and the owners decided it would take forever! Sad

Sprig1 · 25/08/2022 21:30

Yes. Books, cards and Scrabble please.

Alphavilla · 25/08/2022 21:30

Had many a happy Scrabble or card evening after a days walking. Also enjoy browsing the books! XX bird books are always handy X

Skelligsfeathers · 25/08/2022 21:32

Could you put the book case in the living room instead?

Maltester71 · 25/08/2022 21:32

I’m not sure it’s ok to take books, but don’t feel bad .

I can see why people would consider it, however it’s easy to overlook the fact that the property belongs to a real person and you are taking their books. Tricky one, as I’ve mainly non
fiction

No, because the books are not normally to my taste and I've brought ones I'd prefer with me, and the games usually have pieces missing.

viques · 25/08/2022 21:32

Books, games and a guest comment book are the three essentials in a holiday cottage.

😁

It's what you have to console yourself with when you find there are no books at the holiday let.

I very often leave a book and take a book (only non special looking ones though, wouldn't nick a local guide book for example)

Maltester71 · 25/08/2022 21:33

This is actually very helpful.

I don’t have enough games! Im taking scrabble, monopoly and boggle down!

Mindymomo · 25/08/2022 21:34

My last holiday last month I did my first jigsaw in over 20 years. We also played scrabble, monopoly, cluedo and cards. I always leave my finished books or swap them. We stayed in a house in May where there were a lot of autobiographies, I wouldn’t swap with them, as maybe they were the owners personal books.

TheBikiniExpert · 25/08/2022 21:34

I love random holiday let books! I really would not want to find video games- would actually put me off.

SomethingFast · 25/08/2022 21:35

We love local history books and games. We once mistakenly packed a small game along with dc’s things and had to phone the owners and post it back though!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 25/08/2022 21:35

Definitely keep the books. The best holiday let selection was one where there was a 'take one and leave one' sign, so I didn't have to worry I would start one and not be able to finish! Meant there was a really interesting selection too.

Also keep the games, I discovered a new game I thoroughly enjoyed in a holiday let last weekend, in fact I'd never heard of any of them except for monopoly! Was great fun trying them all. (the one I particularly liked was called 'Hive', if anyone is interested.)

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/08/2022 21:35

Yes to games. My kids will
play anything that seems like a special discovered surprise. A scrabble found on a cottage shelf will get played with, but if I brought one from home it would be ignored!

Speedweed · 25/08/2022 21:36

Love looking at the random and quirky books in holiday places. Games are always a nice thing in case the weather is dreadful etc. I stayed in a holiday let recently which also had a old record player, and a collection of the most bizarre/novelty records (the wombles, barren knights, carpenters at Christmas, colliery bands) - it was hilarious listening to them and I thought it was a really nice touch.

An elegant console table in comparison could never be half as much fun!

SomethingFast · 25/08/2022 21:36

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut we have Hive, it’s good fun

TheBikiniExpert · 25/08/2022 21:37

I only take books if it specifically states it's s book swap situation !
