Proving you have money to enter spain?

I have seen new rules where you have to prove you have xx amount of euros per person per day to now get into Spain. I haven’t travelled abroad for about 20 years so just wondered if anyone could clarify the rules for me? Is it 90 euros per person per day and does this include children aswell? I have also seen £900 minimum, does this superseded the 90 euros? Does everyone get checked?

Just arrived in Spain on holiday today, and wasn't asked this at all! My friend also recently returned from Barcelona and wasn't asked either.

fruitypancake · 24/08/2022 21:44

As far as I am aware this only applies if you are staying longer term or don't have flights home booked etc . Think there is some scaremongering going on with this. We have just been to Spain and no such thing mentioned

Hotandbothereds · 24/08/2022 21:46

I went to Spain last week and none of us were asked this, I don’t think it’s something that’s being routinely checked, just something that can be asked if they already have concerns about a persons intentions in entering the country.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2022 22:11

Think about it for a minute. Do you really think they're going to do this? For all the thousands of people who arrive every day?

Or is it the press getting the wrong end of the stick about a rule that has always been in place for non EU residents and going to town with a non story about the nasty Spaniards making up silly rules to spoil the precious holidays of nice British people?

I'm surprised we haven't had the 'this is so unfair, we've scraped together enough money to take the DC to Spain and we're going to have to mostly eat pasta bought from Lidl while we're there, not everyone can afford All Inclusive and eat out in restaurants every night as well, I'm going to be so upset if we get turned away'.

Unless you turn up with a one way ticket and a vague plan to sleep on a mate's sofa and look for work in a bar while you're there, you have nothing to worry about.

APJ1 · 24/08/2022 22:25

I've only seen this reported on the less reliable tabloid sites such as the Express and Sun and even then it was only something being considered.

BarbaraofSeville · 24/08/2022 22:31

Something I'm now wondering, do the papers who write these stories genuinely believe the rubbish they write (after all, it's something that is easy to check and you'd find out in five minutes that they're not going to be expecting to see proof of funds from every British tourist who arrives in Spain, or all other EU countries for that matter) or do they know that what they write is nonsense, but that they enjoy winding up their readership?

It is also 'reported' on the mich more reliable UK Government website and is very much in place Another fall out from Brexit.

However, as PPs have said, how on earth can they check all these things for everyone entering the country. I reckon they publish this so they can reserve the right to check people who look like they might be trying to enter Spain without money, accommodation and return flights.

NegroniNonna · 24/08/2022 22:33

It's not a new rule is it? It's an existing one for non EU travellers.

Rayn22 · 24/08/2022 22:34

Currently in Spain now and not been asked anything!

I think you are right, as I said above, another fall out from Brexit for us

There was a long thread about this. And apparently these rules were in place before Brexit maybe for countries outside the Schengen zone like us. They could always ask people how they meant to support themselves. We used to be able to do the same.

Cherryana · 24/08/2022 22:40

Just been and got back - no one asked about this but we did need a health entry form and any children over 12 need a negative test/proof of two vaccines. They did check all those.

This 😂

True but it didn't affect us until after Brexit

Topseyt123 · 24/08/2022 22:51

We went to Barcelona about 6 weeks ago and weren't asked this at all. In fact, we weren't asked anything at all, not even about/for Covid vaccination certificates.

Sorry, I've not explained properly. These rules didn't just exist for non eu countries, they existed for eu countries not in the schengen zone. So when people arrived here with no means of support, the uk border officials could ask them to prove how they would support themselves. And other countries could do that to us. We just didn't do it but we could have done.
I can't remember who said that, it's on the other thread, but they were very knowledgeable and put up links.

Iflyaway · 24/08/2022 22:56

Yep. The result of no longer being in the EU.

Like any other country, India, China, etc.

But the Spanish are not stupid, they know which side their bread is buttered on. The Brits are one of the top countries to visit Spain.

Anyway, everything is computerised now. They'll only pull you over - like any other country if you come up on Interpol. (International police database).

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/08/2022 23:06

@MarshaMelrose I'd understood that it didn't apply to us before when we were EU bit does now we're a 'third country'.

Regardless, it's highly unlikely any of us will
be checked.

MarshaMelrose · 24/08/2022 23:16

I agree, @RockingMyFiftiesNot , just a clickbait story by the newspapers.

123rd · 24/08/2022 23:45

I think quite a few countries have this 'rule'. Travelling around Asia the gov websites say you are supposed to have x amount in your account

Temporaryname158 · 24/08/2022 23:51

Well it is a rule and in theory they may spot check but equally a return ticket is valid and so not having the funds will not be problematic as you will have a return plane ticket

GrandSlamFinalee · 24/08/2022 23:53

Unless you turn up with a one way ticket and a vague plan to sleep on a mate's sofa and look for work in a bar while you're there, you have nothing to worry about.

Basically, this. You’ll be fine OP.

It’s not a new rule. It doesn’t only affect Brits. It’s not only in place in Spain - most countries in the world have this requirement. It’s actually a requirement for entering the UK as well, from certain countries.

wwyd2021medicine · 25/08/2022 00:10

It's on the gov.uk website so I'm planning on taking a bank statement when I go in September. I know it's vanishingly unlikely that it will be checked but I'd feel a right idiot if I was turned away knowing it was their rule.
What's really irritating is that it says that online info won't be acceptable esp with so many folk not getting paper statements any longer.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/08/2022 00:16

@wwyd2021medicine a credit card will suffice I read, in the unlikely event

wwyd2021medicine · 25/08/2022 07:34

The information I have read in various places inc this from Spanish government website include mentions statements that are not on line. Possession of a credit card alone is not a proof of funds
