Kindle - for or against?

Rightly or wrongly, I've always been against buying a Kindle.

But it's becoming increasingly apparent that I am in the minority, and now I think maybe I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face as I hate change Grin

Obviously it's cheaper long term, no trekking to the shops, and more environmentally friendly.

But for me, it surely doesn't come close to reading an actual book, and it's one thing I can do to get away from screens.

Has anyone felt like me and is now converted?

Or did you try it and hate it?

Ive had to buy a new kindle because I can’t download books on to my old one anymore….ive kept the old one cos its got masses of books on there, some still unread (had hundreds of books ‘given’ to me)

i read a lot and although i still buy new books and 2nd hand ones I can’t afford to buy new ones every time….i usually read at least 8 books a month, last month it was 16 and this month will be at least 19 (really want to make it 20 but i need to stop mumsnetting)

i have kindle unlimited at the moment and would agree that some of the books on there aren’t exactly going to set the literary world alight but they are still generally interesting so i will probably keep the subscription going

Saves me the cost of an extra suitcase on holidays. Never finish a book and don’t have another with me, syncs with apps on phone/iPad so I can sneaky read anywhere, even without the kindle and now I’m old and need reading glasses for real books, it’s a godsend because I just make the font bigger.

ps. I’ve had one since day dot and I can still tell when I’ve found a good book because I’ll try and bend the corner to save my place 😂

I don't see the point of a dedicated kindle when you can use the app on your phone.

Kindles use e-ink, which looks like a book page. Totally different to a phone or tablet screen.

My husband bought me a kindle years ago against my wishes, he was concerned about the amount of space in our house used up by piles and piles of books.
I agreed grudgingly to give it a go and have never looked back. I absolutely love it!
I can read in the dark and not disturb him, I can enlarge the font and not need my glasses so I can snuggle down in bed and read, I can access any book I want to read instantly which is brilliant when you find a new series and need the next one.
I bought dd a kindle of her own and she loves it too, when we go away we both get excited to get our reading lists ready in advance.
I love physical books but kindles have so much going for them and it doesn’t feel like looking at a screen at all.

I was the same. My DH bought me one about 10 years ago for my birthday.
He didn't bother to wrap it and I saw it in the morning before work, before he actually gave it to me. I purposely didn't 'open' my gift as I needed the day to get used to the idea so I wouldn't look disappointed.

After getting used to it I really do like it.
I still have it. I love that mine is more like a normal book than a screen.
I love that I can be moving between rooms, or brushing my teeth or anything else I should be doing, and keep reading easy enough.

I also still love print books.

The only thing I don't like about mine is I can't read the blurb of books downloaded long ago, as I invariably forget them. I used to at least be able to go to the kindle store to find them, it was a faff but possible, mine is so old apparently that it can't even access the kindle store anymore.

I was given a Fire Amazon for my birthday in July and downloaded Kindle books. I have enjoyed reading them.

Now it is saying 'This item is protected with DRM and cannot be read on your fire'

Has anyone else had this? Feel like throwing the thing in the bin.

I used to feel the same. I was totally against the kindle. I love actual books. Then I found out I could borrow books from the library without having to actually go to the library. And that totally changed my view. Now I love my kindle. Books are also heavy and awkward to hold and the kindle is nice and light.

I can't read the blurb of books downloaded long ago

on mine, if you open a book you can click in the top right corner and find a menu that says "about this book". This was on my old Paperwhite (although it's the same on my new one too)

DorritLittle · 05/09/2022 07:14

I love it mine. What's not to like? I often find people who say they don't like Kindles actually don't like Amazon or have never really tried one.

Or they're talking about the tablet version, not the proper ereader version, which is completely different.

I miss flicking back through the book but I love the fact I can read it in the bath and it's waterproof 🤣🤣🤣

ChessieFL · 05/09/2022 09:12

I love my Paperwhite for all the reasons others have said, but I still read and buy lots of physical books too. It’s really not an either/or situation.

I do wish that Amazon didn’t call their tablets the Kindle Fire though. I often read things on here where people are talking about their kindle and it turns out they’re talking about the Fire tablet, not a kindle e-reader, which can get confusing if they’re talking about something that’s possible on a tablet but not a kindle e-reader, such as using it for library ebooks. I wish Amazon just called their tablet the Fire, would be much less confusing!
