Kindle - for or against?

Rightly or wrongly, I've always been against buying a Kindle.

But it's becoming increasingly apparent that I am in the minority, and now I think maybe I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face as I hate change Grin

Obviously it's cheaper long term, no trekking to the shops, and more environmentally friendly.

But for me, it surely doesn't come close to reading an actual book, and it's one thing I can do to get away from screens.

Has anyone felt like me and is now converted?

Or did you try it and hate it?

I love my Kindle because I like reading, not books as a physical item, although I do love browsing bookshops, only to come away with a list of books to buy for my Kindle when they go on offer for 99p.

The Kindle Paperwhite is also waterproof so good for reading in the bath and being able to read in the dark is probably the best bit.

They're also nothing like a screen. In the daylight it looks just like a real book, and there's also no distraction like you'd get with a phone or tablet.

If you're unsure and in no rush, why not wait for Black Friday, they're usually on offer with a good discount at that time?

I agree with this. Never have to lug two books on my commute because I've nearly finished one of them!

I do buy some books, especially non-fiction, though

Love mine. I carry it everywhere and I know it will always fit in my handbag so no taking loads of heavy books on holiday .No losing the page when bookmark falls out. You can hold it in one hand. Kindle lite is great for reading at night.and also outside .you can font style and size to suit your needs.
I have also discovered new authors as I download a lot of free books and have the read more of their books. I wouldn't have brought the books as I wasn't sure on reading the blurb if I would get into it but nothing lost when they are free. I'm on my third one now as I had one from the begining and they just stopped recharging. . Fantastic love it

DH bought my paperwhite for me for Christmas 2012 I think. I was inwardly furious as I thought it was such a waste of money and I'd never use it.

It is honestly now the thing I'd save if the house was on fire if all humans and animals were safe! I love it. Easy and pleasant to hold, I have been able to increase font as my eyes get old. I can read in the middle of the night when insomnia strikes without disturbing DH. Fab for travelling.

I still read actual books but my kindle is definitely a treasured possession.

emmetgirl · 24/08/2022 21:12

I've had a kindle for over 10 years. I got one as my books were taking up an increasing amount of room in my house. It was getting stupid.
It took some getting used to but I love my kindle now and I get to take hundreds of books on holiday with me!

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/08/2022 21:12

I used to be you until I realised the convenience of
-not having the weight of a dozen books in my holiday suitcase
-being able to buy the sequel at 2am when I need to start immediately

Then I realised I was being a bit silly for holding out.

Now when I pick up a real book I find I get a sore stiff neck within 20 minutes

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/08/2022 21:15

I have a kindle oasis that I got during a black Friday sale.
I find it easier to hold.

I read it during the night when the light is off

I still read paper books as well.

You can get free copies of new books through netgalley if you review them.

CharlotteSt · 24/08/2022 21:16

I se mine for holidays and travel but it will never beat a real book.

CharlotteSt · 24/08/2022 21:16

*use

Starship951 · 24/08/2022 21:17

I prefer real books but download free books onto my kindle. Who knew paranormal romance was so entertaining during bouts of insomnia?

balalake · 24/08/2022 21:32

I have one as a low cost means of accessing the internet when on holiday. Finding out when things are open for example. I did not feel I could justify a normal tablet such as an iPad.

MissPoldark · 24/08/2022 21:37

I also love the built in dictionary so that you can instantly check the meaning if new or unfamiliar words.

nicknamehelp · 24/08/2022 21:46

I love mine for so many reasons.
1 can read it with light out so doesn't disturb others so much.
2 light weight to carry when travelling/reading when on trains etc
3 I don't loose my place if fall asleep and drop book.
4 Can load up books so always have something to read even if finish a book at 2am
5 If want a book before publish date can preorder and it magic arrives
6 battery lasts ages so not inconvenient having to keep chsrdef
7 easier to hold than a big book for my poor old hands
8 cheaper books
9 no stacks of books cluttering up house
10 no one knows what you are reading

I'd only had a Kindle for about 10 years before I realised you could do that. I was actually googling words on my phone until I realised Blush

I don't loose my place if fall asleep and drop book

So you've never fallen asleep on the Kindle and advanced several pages using your sleeping face so when you come back to the book, you have no idea what is going on in the story. Or is that just me?

Brogues · 24/08/2022 21:58

Mine is almost 10 so battery life is compromised but I still love it… but but but I’ve been on audio books via my library and Audible special offers and I’m converted! I can ‘read’ while I drive.

LBOCS2 · 24/08/2022 22:01

I also love the fact that because I have the kindle app on my phone I literally always have my book with me if I find a moment to read, and it's on the right page.

I refused a kindle for years. I took 8! Books on a two week holiday one year and ended up raiding the swap shop for four more!
Dh bought me a kindle that year and it's amazing

Nitflux · 24/08/2022 22:07

Absolutely love my Kindle. The best bit is having a cover so you can stand it up in a triangle shape when on your side in bed, and get all snuggled up under the duvet with only one finger exposed to press the screen to turn the page. I’m also that person who has tapped the page of an actual book to try and turn the page. Ridiculous, I know.

orangetriangle · 24/08/2022 22:09

love my kindle paperwhite on my second one wouldnt be without it take it everywhere

Lochjeda · 24/08/2022 22:11

I would never go back to reading books again. They are a faff to hold open when lying in bed sprawling round. I can get whatever book I want instantly. I can get free books with prime. I can read with the lights out to allow my dh to sleep. It helps me fall asleep so quickly compared to a book where I use to have to have the light on in our room. The e books are cheaper. Wouldn't be without it now.

Treat yourself to a new Kindle- on lots of the newer models you can download Audible books to it and listen via Bluetooth speaker/ headphones, and you can swap between listening & reading

sageandbasil · 24/08/2022 22:12

I go through phases with mine. Nothing beats a good beat but practically a kindle works better for me. For the last few months I've ditched the kindle tho. I've got too many books cluttering up the house but I just love a book!

sorrysaythatagain · 24/08/2022 22:13

I love the traditional book and have over 500 on my bookshelf.
I have a kindle and reading a book on it gave me a headache but I persevered because I paid for the book.

I haven't read one on a kindle for years but found a free book on the kindle app and am currently reading it on my iPhone. Dimmed the screen. It's ok but paper books are my first love.

Fuckitydoodah · 24/08/2022 22:14

I felt the same as you OP. But now I'd say my kindle paperwhite is one of the best/most useful gifts I've ever received.

The biggest positive for me is being able to read in a dark bedroom without disturbing DH or kids.

mondaytosunday · 24/08/2022 22:14

Yes I prefer books, but what space they take up! In our old house we had a room full of shelves of books no one was going to read again.
One holiday I swear half my husbands suitcase was books (more annoying that he thought he'd have time to read all that with a baby and toddler).
Now I have my kindle and I can store dozens if not hundreds of books. I also use Amazon Prime so I can borrow up to six books at a time. So easy.

Blackdiame · 24/08/2022 22:18

May I ask a question from all you kindle lovers - where do you 'buy' books? Is it all from Amazon or are there other vendors? Can you borrow from the library apps on a kindle?
