Anyone dreading the gcse results tomorrow?

Dd has her gcse results tomorrow and I'm dreading it. She did no revision and came out of each exam saying it was fine. She has a place at college if she gets 5 passes. I'm worried she won't. Then what happens? Can she resit them all again?

Me too. Especially with the harsh marking of the A levels this year. I too have a child that just says it was fine. We also have no idea what will happen if it all goes tits up. There will be careers staff on hand to discuss further options.

Boxshibe · 24/08/2022 19:11

Hopefully she'll listen to the staff. She's nervous but not worried as such.

I don't think there was any harsh marking - as an examiner, I was told to mark as normal. The grade boundaries are in line with or more generous than 2019 even though there was reduced content or advance information. As a teacher, I feel more confident than usual!

I am dreading them, my dd is positively laid back about them, despite doing little work.
My other dd says she got 6's on no revision so her sister should walk them as she is super smart compared to he.
I am not so sure.

ToTryToDelight · 24/08/2022 19:21

My son gets his results tomorrow. He’s been super nervous since the end of the GCSEs but now he’s nonchalant

Trixiebell06 · 24/08/2022 19:23

My child is the same and said it was all fine
I am concerned as she’s lazy we have found another school if she doesn’t obtain the grades for her current one

LividLaVidaLoca · 24/08/2022 19:24

Agree with no harsh marking. The boundaries are higher than 2019 but lower than the pandemic TAGs.

UnboxedThoughts · 24/08/2022 19:24

My ds had to retake English so this is his 2nd results day. I don't think he'll have passed, which will mean another year of lessons, if the college allows him...

WeeMadArthur1 · 24/08/2022 19:25

Can I join in for a hand hold? DD needs a six in English and maths for the college she's got an offer at, and she just scraped those in the PPEs/mocks. Frustratingly she dealt with her anxiety around the exams by ignoring the revision and hoping for the best.

We also have no idea what happens if she doesn't get the grades. She's only got this one offer, I presume they may let then retake if the grade isn't too far below the target?

The issue isn't the marking of examiners its that we have been told that the exam boards will reduce the higher grades to stop grade inflation. A direct change from what we were told earlier in the year.

But when has that ever stopped them?

lechatnoir · 24/08/2022 19:30

Yup similar to you dc did very very little work and it honestly could go either way. Needs 8 passes (out of 10 taken) inc maths & English to stay on at 6th form. Do have a plan B college place for a Btec/retakes but definitely not first choice and there will be disappointment to manage. (Me & him - 3 years ago he was a solid 6/7 with the odd 8 student but completely disengaged during lockdownSad)

HairyKitty · 24/08/2022 19:32

There’s been no harsh marking, in fact the grade boundaries are generous compared with all precovid sittings, so in theory it will be easier to get a certain grade this year than in 2019 and all years prior to that.

unless you have seen the grade boundaries, you really can't say this.

CupboardOfThings · 24/08/2022 19:36

Yes and no. No, as I know DC will do well and get the grades needed for the offer to 6th form they have chosen. Yes, because they are incredibly harsh on themselves and quite perfectionistic so while they know they will do well, they want to do "best" and I don't want them to be disappointed.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 24/08/2022 19:38

Ds doesn’t need much to get onto his btec course.

Apparently all of the exams were easy and he says he did actually do some revision for these and he didn’t bother for his mocks (which were ok grade wise). He’s a bright lad, but with such interrupted learning and it being difficult to engage him with the online learning, as long as he passes his GCSEs and can start his college course next month we’ll be happy.

Flyingflamingoes · 24/08/2022 19:39

Yep-
DS previously predicted 7s or more, struggled with engagement with remote learning so terrible mocks....
Bad bout of tonsillitis followed by lockdown followed by Covid infection then multiple odd days off sick....
Then screaming fear and panic attacks to avoid school, no attendance since October....an OD....complete social isolation and more.

Tbh, in March I never thought we'd see exams being sat. It took a village approach to even get into the exam rooms. Now I'm just grateful he's still alive but dreading the fallout from tomorrow.

I'm just praying for a handful of 5s and a change in thinking that gets him back into education......

Purple24 · 24/08/2022 19:42

Come and join us on the Secondary Education board, we have a post running for support - "current year 11 - 2 more weeks of exams"😀

Boxshibe · 24/08/2022 19:43

I'll take a look thanks

DS did very little revision and is totally unconcerned. He just says it was 'fine' when I ask him about his exams. I've got my fingers crossed for tomorrow, he needs 5 passes at 4 or above including Maths and English to get onto his college course.
He also did a level 2 BTEC which apparently might have delayed results!

honkeytonkwoman38 · 24/08/2022 19:47

My daughter developed panic disorder in Year 10 and has barely had any lessons for gcse. Of course I'm dreading it! I just think she has ambitions though and she can make up for it. Life is a journey.

TeenDivided · 24/08/2022 19:50

OP. If she 'fails them all' then generally speaking she can go to college and do a 1 year level 2 BTEC whilst retaking English Language and maths. Then she can progress to a 2 year level 3 BTEC. You can't retake random subjects at college (or at least they won't teach them).

If she doesn't get grade 3s then she may have to start at a Level 1 BTEC and do functional skills for maths and English.

TeenDivided · 24/08/2022 19:52

The world doesn't end if they bomb out. DD missed all y11 through illness and ended up with no passes. She has done a Level 1 course at college whilst recovering, and will do another one next year.

Youcanlaugh · 24/08/2022 19:52

My DS was exactly the same! Didn’t seem to revise and came out saying every one was “fine” and “easier than he thought it would be” etc…. He revised fairly well for the mocks and did quite well in most subjects but I feel like he peaked too soon and got lazy with it… me and my husband have been saying it could go either way, we have no idea!!

GeometricCurtain · 24/08/2022 19:56

Dreading it here.

Ds is capable but lazy and lost all interest in revision. He's only applied to one college so if he doesn't get in there is no plan B yet.
Not looking forward to the despondent and deflated teen he will become if the results are not good enough.

So nervous!

I’ve seen some of last week’s, yes, but you are right we won’t know til tomorrow if they’ve stuck to that for tomorrow’s results as well.
