How much should I pay him?

As I'm moving house I have asked a family friend (who does some handyman work on the side) to help with the following

Assembly of double bed
Assembly of two single beds
Mounting TV to wall
Taking up some old carpet

I'm just wondering..how much do you think I should pay him? What's a reasonable amount for 3/4 hours work?

Most would charge £50 per flatpack so it'd be £150 for those things alone if you didn't know this person. I don't know what I'd offer for the other services.

Mindymomo · 24/08/2022 15:02

£100, or £80 and some lunch thrown in.

Cas112 · 24/08/2022 15:03

£100quid

Nearer to 150 I think.

Bobbybobbins · 24/08/2022 15:17

I would say £150

Sprig1 · 24/08/2022 15:17

If he regularly does this kind of thing just ask him how much he is going to charge you.

GiltEdges · 24/08/2022 15:19

We paid more than £100 just for someone to mount our TV to the wall, so that seems awfully low to me.

blisstwins · 24/08/2022 15:23

I would ask him. So much depends on where you are.

Ducksallovertheplace · 24/08/2022 15:26

£100 would be taking the piss. If he does handy man work surely he has an hourly rate and you pay him for however long it takes.

pumpkinpie01 · 24/08/2022 15:28

The mounting the tv to the wall could be a right pain I know ours was . Taking up a carpet is not going to take long , can you not do that yourself ? You cut it with a Stanley knife into pieces and roll it up . I would say £120

cushioncovers · 24/08/2022 15:32

I would take the carpet up yourself. I ripped up all the bedroom carpets and the stairs carpet. It wasn't that hard.

belliniqueen · 24/08/2022 15:38

He's a family friend and doesn't have hourly rates, I'm not in London so I feel 100 is plenty. Thanks for everyone's input!

£100 is really low I'd pay £300 if I wanted him to come back again
Handy men are very hard to come by, value them

75 quid an hour? I'm in the wrong profession 😂😂😂

What do you mean by mounting the TV, do you want the cables trunked or chanelled in and then walls made good.

Literally mounting on the wall, £150 all in.

TwoNightStand · 24/08/2022 16:20

I think £150 if he is done in 4 hours.

DoubleGauze · 24/08/2022 16:22

It sounds like you want a handyman and an electrician for £100 , to do 3 separate jobs. I think £200 is more appropriate. And I bet it takes longer than 4hrs too.

There is no electrical work involved, it is literally mounting the tv onto a bracket

I’d pay £150 so I always knew I could ask him to do stuff for me again….

DoubleGauze · 24/08/2022 16:27

@belliniqueen fair enough , £100 seems a little low though.

Also not in London FWIW, so not sure why you’ve assumed anyone who said more than £100 would be. But you’ve obviously made up your mind before you even asked 🙄 so I’m sorry I wasted my time responding

Agegapissue · 24/08/2022 16:30

How is 25 an hour taking the piss ? my DP charges £10 an hour for handyman work although I’ve told him many times to charge more

belliniqueen · 24/08/2022 16:38

@GiltEdges have a blessed day!
