New PM to stop energy increase??

Jobotheclown · 23/08/2022 21:35

Bear with me...

I've seen more and more Twitter threads (and TikToks) that are starting to think that the lack of any Tory MPs stepping out of line on the energy crisis is a sign that something might actually be planned for when the leadership contest is over. Going further than Truss with her tax cuts, and Sunak, but that they might actually freeze energy prices (stealing labour's proposals) after all.

At this point, I really don't know. They know that public opinion is rock bottom so they need something to get people back on side but is this too much to hope for?

Not a chance. They'll come up with another 3 word slogan - Turn. Off. Lights. or Wear. A. Hat.or something stupid like that, lecture us all about choices and life sometimes being hard, and will not give a fuck. Perhaps they will give out a fuel voucher for a tenner a month, or an energy loan redeemable against your first born or something, but it will be nowhere near what's needed and certainly nothing that's well thought out.

@Jobotheclown It would be a loan to the tune of £100m i believe! In context Furlough cost £70m. There's more articles about it today, the chief exec of Scottish Power has asked Nicola Sturgeon for something similar.

Did you mean 70billion GBP gross cost?

70m GBP is equal to 50 minutes of U.K. tax revenue.

flowerycurtain · 24/08/2022 13:15

If they do do this loan thingy they need to pull their finger out in renewables.

We're going for a 3MW solar park on (non prime) ag land. It's being held up because there are works needed at the local substation. If the gov wanted to they could do this work in months and the solar panels could be up and running in 18months. So far we've been told 2028 before WPD will receive funding for the works required.

I don't quite get it all to be honest. Electric is going up because there are too many people trying to buy too little gas worldwide. Unless we dramatically upscale our nuclear and renewable options we are yet again kicking the can down the road rather than face the unpalatable truth.

We cannon continue consuming as we do.

There will be a massive intervention and an emergency budget in October. Things have to play out first with the Tory leadership.

RedRiverShore2 · 24/08/2022 13:19

If they do, what about those that fixed and are still fixing now with large exit fees, surely they should say sooner rather than later so people don't fix, many people are paying over the odds now on fixed rates. Ours isn't too bad as we done it in June but some people are paying loads now for peace of mind later

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 13:22

@DdraigGoch trickle down economics may not have been mentioned explicitly but Truss' proposed tax cuts are a prime example (not increasing from 19% to 25% next year as planned which means that of the £30bn tax cuts, £19bn will go to business). Cutting taxes for business with the assumption that it'll kickstart the economy.

I'm sure there will have been small gains for people not in the super wealthy category but it's reaching to say that this gov has benefited lower income families more than their wealthy counterparts.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out once Truss is PM (as we all know that's how it's going to end). I'd like to believe they'll do something more drastic, especially when energy companies are more than willing.

OP posts:
Oblomov22 · 24/08/2022 13:25

I fear not.

Btw I saw this, someone had posted on Facebook. Is it true? Or nonsense? Have France really put a limit? If so why can't we?
Or is that post nonsense?

New PM to stop energy increase??
Oblomov22 · 24/08/2022 13:28

Not a fan of the Conservatives but hang on a second what is labour suggesting here?
what is anyone suggesting as a reasonable compromise here?

I don't even understand what the answer is myself to be honest.

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 13:34

@Oblomov22 labour have proposed that energy prices are frozen which they've said they'll fund by backdating the windfall tax and closing a loophole for tax relief on fossil fuel investment. Not sure how realistic that would be so the suggestion of a loan from the government to the energy companies to keep prices down until renewables are more reliable in the early 2030s seems reasonable.

OP posts:
carefullycourageous · 24/08/2022 13:36

@Oblomov22 Yes that comparison between France and UK is basically accurate.

Starmer is proposing freezing UK energy prices twitter.com/Keir_Starmer/status/1561709213969268736. Tories are currently still telling the British public to fuck off and die if they can't afford the expected increase.

Tory way is worse for the British people as it means the state is subbing the businesses despite their huge/record profits.

Got to protect the profits of course - shareholders matter more than the regular British people.

DdraigGoch · 24/08/2022 12:37

The neoliberal trickle down economics...

OP, what do you mean by this? Kindly name one person of influence who has advocated "trickle-down economics".

Like it or not, the bottom end of society have benefitted significantly from tax cuts during the last 12 years. The personal allowance (on which you do not pay income tax or national insurance) has risen substantially above inflation,

while the threshold for paying the top rate of tax has stagnated. The burden of funding our services falls on high earners far more than it ever did in the past (and quite right too). Even Brexit has benefitted low earners by rebalancing the jobs market in their favour, at the expense of the middle classes. So it's simply not true that only the rich have benefitted from the current government.

And yet the gap between the rich and poor is wider than ever. Anyone with an sense knows exactly who has benefitted from this awful government.

LionessesRules · 24/08/2022 13:40

But the OFGEM rises will be announced before we get a new PM, I thought. Can government enforce a reduction in the pricecap?

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 13:43

Yes price cap announcement on Friday I think? Not sure where they stand on reducing price cap but with Ofgem directors resigning because of the price cap, where there's a will, there's a way.

RedRiverShore2 · 24/08/2022 14:01

It will be us that pays back this loan though, we won't gain anything, power companies aren't paying, it is the government, ie. the taxpayer.

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 14:06

Isle of Man energy prices frozen - news confirmed via BBC earlier today. Yes, they're government owned so slightly different but still a loan to be paid back over 20 years.

@PersonaNonGarter The problem is that the government care more about the owners and themselves than Joe public. Any intervention will be about PR rather than stopping people freezing to death this winter.

Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer they do something rather than nothing but let's not pretend it's because they care.

The idea that everyone in the government is a sociopath is really bigoted and ignorant.

Look, it’s clear that you really hate them, but they are likely nicer people than you, and so do care about you despite how you view them.

They shouldn’t, but they probably do.

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 14:13

Wow @StillGoingStrongToday. It's clear they're nicer people than me? You have no idea what kind of person I am. It's sad that any debate about government (in)action turns into personal insults.

For what it's worth, I work in an area where we're seeing a massive increase in people seeking food and fuel support as the government support is not enough. But yes, they're obviously nicer than me...probably because they're so far removed from it.

Also, no one mentioned sociopathic politicians apart from you...

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 11:23

Actually, I'll correct my post before I get jumped. It's a loan of £100bn being requested. Currently have Covid so not on the ball.

Don’t worry. Pretty much everyone bashing the government on here is functionally innumerate and completely ignorant of economics, international energy markets and the situation in other countries.

It’s little surprise that people so uninformed are struggling to get by. Living life with not enough nous to even read up on a subject before getting angry isn’t a great route to a good job.

You’re being hypocritical. You’re happy to paint the government as uncaring monsters based on little more than your prejudice yet are upset if someone then makes a judgement based on your own words.

I’m just sick of pretty horrible people whining that others won’t care about them.

Why would the government possibly care about someone who hates them?

Jobotheclown · 24/08/2022 14:24

Again @StillGoingStrongToday, wow. I think we already knew which side of the political spectrum you sit.

Your assumption that I haven't read up on a subject when you've quoted my own self correction of a typo Hmm. Humans do occasionally make mistakes but then why do we care about humanity, eh?

I'm guessing the government don't take it personally @StillGoingStrongToday, but you appear to. You seem very invested in them. Maybe have a chat with them and reassure them they can still turn things round by helping people not freeze to death this winter?

Why? Seriously, you are coming across as really not very nice, why should I ask anyone to help you? What are you doing to help people like me?

FourTeaFallOut · 24/08/2022 14:31

Of course the Tories wouldn't announce an intervention right now. The best political bang for their buck is that the new cap is announced on Friday and a huge media cycle begins with apocalyptic narratives to frighten the life out of the general public, Monday, new PM is announced. Tuesday Liz or Rishi rides in on a white horse with a plan and a cheque book and their rating rise is the polls undoing the bad press achieved over the leadership competition.

Calm is restored. Starmer yells,"Hey I thought of that first!" and Gordon Brown mutters, "No you fucking didn't".
