Keep seeing 'my mum' everywhere since she died, does this happen to everyone?

In work today and for a good 3 seconds thought I saw my mum having a peruse through brochures and things. To the extent that I made eye contact with this lady, gave her a big cheesy grin and took a couple of steps towards her before I remembered that she died last year.

This happens nearly every day, or example I see a lady with a similar hair cut and height, wearing a coat my mum owned and my heart lifts for a couple of seconds before I remember again.

It's just thrown me today how long it lasted for before my brain kicked in.
Does this happen to everyone? How do you cope with it? It's been almost a year since she died and when this happens I become tearful all over again

My brother died two weeks ago and I see him everywhere! Mind, I saw " him" all over when he was alive. Chubby, baldy, middle aged bloke with or without a beard there are loads of them 😂

Dh showed me a video of Paddy Pimblett being interviewed for a pod cast and there was a man sitting next to him and the way the man pulled his face to laugh coupled with his general appearance it was my brother all over for a brief second, I actually said his name out loud in disbelief and then the reality set in.

Hearts, flowers and love to all of you. I lost my dad unexpectedly last year -
Mum seems So much more precious now (not that she wasn't before) but I'm terrified about losing her now. I know it happens to all of us at some point but Christ, it's so crap

My dm died in 2006.

l still think l see her😟

Yeah, my DB was 2005 and I do the same. I didn't realise it was a 'thing' - I thought my DB must've just had a very common look 🤦🏻‍♀️

When it happens now though OP it isn't the punch to the gut as it used to be, it's a brief pause, then I think 'wow he's the double of DB' - I don't feel sad about it anymore.

This still happens to me 15 years after losing my brother - I know it just can’t be him but I just have to go and check and end up staring at said person usually or following them down a couple of aisles in the supermarket. It breaks my heart every time. I’m so sorry for your loss

Yes, i like to think they caused my path to cross.

Yes, I’ve ‘seen’ my mother standing quite close to me in my living room. In the house I bought five years after she died. I’ve seen my dad here too, again after he passed away. It’s usually at times of stress or worry I find, I find it comforting. It does lessen over time.

Sorry for your loss.

My brother died in 2010. I thought I saw him waiting at a bus stop the other day.

You aren’t alone in this, I’m sorry for your loss. 💐
We were sitting in a cafe recently and a man who looked just like my late dad came in. My DH & I looked at each other and we both said “ OMG” It was uncanny how much he looked & walked like my dear dad.

This happens to me too. One memorable moment was the day we had exchanged on a flat for DM to move into near us after DF died. I was walking through town and saw someone who looked like DF. He must have seen me looking at him and he gave me a smile. I like to think it was a sign we were doing the right thing moving my DM from their old home.

It's love 🌹😥

I used to see my sister in her long, black winter coat. Lots of women wore them and she was everywhere for a while. Waiting at bus stops. Wandering through the hat department of BHS. Standing outside Top Shop where we used to meet. In a weird way, I was sorry when it stopped.

Sorry about your mum.

Flowers to everyone grieving. I only had this once but it felt very real for a lovely split second.

InsertPunHere · 24/08/2022 01:37

Love to all of you mourning loved ones.

Thinking I saw my mum was less painful than the times I went to ring her because something made me laugh or cry.

shiningcuckoo · 24/08/2022 02:16

I haven't had this. Not for mum nor dad. I wish I did though.

I wasn't close to my mum but I generally have a few memories of her that make me smile. She died quite young in 2007 and although it's happened far less in the past few years - I still "think" I've seen her - usually in shops - and this wave of recognition passes over me as my brain tells me "that's her!" - often because of similar hair, clothing or general stature - it was a bit weird at first but I soon grew to like those moments - and I still do because I don't think of her often but these moments make me think of her so - it's not a bad thing at all - quite a magical thing really - I probably see her once a year now - something like that.

I have never dreamed about my mum after she died and not that often before TBH - 11 years after she died I had an unusually vivid dream about her - I really not sure what triggered it - possibly the face of a white stone angel in a churchyard that looked a little like her - I had stopped there while out running a few times and noticed it. I out the dream into a song which I wrote over the subsequent 2 days. I have never dreamed about her since! Strange isn't it - considering we weren't close - she was not demonstrative and struggled with everything in life. Oddly I am perhaps more fond of her through the few positive memories of her I do have - in practical terms she wasn't up to the role of being a mother.

A year doesn't seem like a long time to me @Arewerelated - I would try and learn to love those moments - they will happen, there's nothing you can do about that and it's not really a bad thing to have a moment to reflect on your mum.
