If my son likes polishing coins, what else might he like?

He loves to get a bit of duraglit/brasso and polish coins. It’s all a bit pointless but he likes it. What else might be just as satisfying?

hes 13, very Asperger’s.

We’ve been dong some crazy advanced Lego tonight - sort of a mosaic but it’s the Beatles. Very good but it was making my eyes go funny!

Hi op! I know you’re asking for OTHER things he might like to do, but… as it happens, my DH is an antiques dealer, mainly coins. We must see in 40-50,000 coins a year and there’s always a pile of coins he puts to one side as they don’t quite make the grade, are too common or the likes. If you’re at all interested, I’ll happily post a box out to you so your son has something to keep him going until you find something else he enjoys doing. I’ve attached a picture of a random box I’ve just seen on the kitchen table this evening, just so you know I’m not some lunatic 🤣 DH is more than happy for him to have them, if he likes. Drop me a PM if your son would like them, no bother at all if they’re not what he’s into! X

It seems quite different but my aspie son who loves tumbling rocks, fossils and growing Venus fly traps absolutely loves needle felting at the moment. He didn't think that he'd like the texture but someone gave him a little kit and he's absolutely hooked: he makes badges and superhero figurines as well as small animals and anime figures.

I wonder if it’s worth trying textile crafts. If it’s repetitive movements he likes, knitting might work.

Aw it’s our pleasure! They’re just sat here doing nothing, would be so lovely if the young man could get a little enjoyment out of them. Let me know your address in a PM and I’ll get them posted out in the morning for him 🤗 x

Will do! Gosh he will be SO excited!

Ah yes we had a carnivorous plant stage, but it wasn’t quite as gory as expected. That said he’s a keen horticulturist and has his own veg beds and is growing a melon (of all things) around the kitchen window.

Car interior detailing. Basically going to fastidious extents to make sure every inch is as clean as it can possibly be. There's bloody good money in it too if he's good.

TheFormidableMrsC · 22/08/2022 00:10

My similarly diagnosed son likes metal detecting, magnet fishing and collecting any shiny thing that has been discarded by others. My garage resembles a museum. Finding and cleaning old hubcaps. Anything that requires a squirt of WD40. I spent so long trying to find ways of dealing with it that I just let him self lead now. Charity shops are a cheap source of entertainment and things to repair or repurpose.

SleepyTraveller · 22/08/2022 00:11

Drawing knotwork or other geometric patterns? The precision and repetitive element might appeal. There are books of knotwork designs and tutorials, and also video tutorials

Ariela · 22/08/2022 00:16

Tack cleaning!

Seriously, he could make a living at this if he's good and you live in a horsey area.

Polishing stuff for a local antique shop

This is so kind and thoughtful! What a lovely offer, I love when Mumsnet enables the kindness of strangers! Hopefully he will gets lots of enjoyment from your husbands coins.

Also, 40-50,000 coins! Wow! My eyes are going cross-eyed just at the thought of sorting through that many coins. Where does he get them? Does he buy blind boxes at auctions and then need to rifle through to see if any are worth anything?
