If my son likes polishing coins, what else might he like?

He loves to get a bit of duraglit/brasso and polish coins. It’s all a bit pointless but he likes it. What else might be just as satisfying?

hes 13, very Asperger’s.

French polishing?

RewildingAmbridge · 21/08/2022 21:41

*pebble painting and varnishing

No idea where purfleet and barcoding came from!

ofwarren · 21/08/2022 21:42

I've no advice but just wanted to say that I LOVED doing that as a child!
I got diagnosed in my 30s.
Im tempted to get some brasso and try it again Grin

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 21/08/2022 21:42

Does he actually love the physical work of polishing, or making things look pretty? If latter, he may like resin art.

Brass rubbings in churches?

This ^^ I did some as a child and it is immensely satisfying

Needmorelego · 21/08/2022 21:43

Sorting things like tangled up wool or beads into colours ?
Some Lego enthusiasts pay people to sort their Lego.

Keepingupappearance · 21/08/2022 21:43

Are you near London? There is a guy in Greenwich who does one to one mudlarking demonstrations. My friend did one and loved it.

WorriedMillie · 21/08/2022 21:44

If he likes finding things too, definitely fossil/pebble/seaglass hunting and polishing ❤️

PineForestsAndSunshine · 21/08/2022 21:46

If he enjoys collecting things might he be interested in vintage horse brasses? My grandfather collected them and would let me polish them when I visited. Very satisfying!

That's a good idea
I used to love polishing my Grandmas brasses too.
I bet you can pick old brass up from charity shops and car boots for cheap.

PineForestsAndSunshine · 21/08/2022 21:58

So many happy memories @ofwarren

My grandfather also collected novelty die cast pencil sharpeners. Now those were amazing!

Welshrarebitontoast · 21/08/2022 22:05

Charity shop for brass ornaments/ plates and get selection of cloths (ones for polish, ones for buffing etc). Perhaps once he’s finished bringing them back to life he can sell them on eBay to fund buying some more?

I bought some rose bowls that were very tarnished but looked amazing after a bit of a clean up.

MilliwaysUniverse · 21/08/2022 22:07

Collecting and cleaning military medals, cap badges and buttons?

TopGolfer · 21/08/2022 22:19

I used to love brass rubbing, collecting postcards and arranging and rearranging them into different groups, patch working , collecting things. He may like WarHammer or fimo.

Ffordecortana · 21/08/2022 22:23

I’m loving this thread! I used to polish the brasses at my gran’s house and I have some here now and polish them together! V satisfying.

Do you have any jewellery he could clean for you? I did all mine in lockdown and really enjoyed it.

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 21/08/2022 22:31

Get him polishing all the mirrors and glass at home. No streaks!

hedgehogger1 · 21/08/2022 22:34

Another vote for Rock tumbling. To be fair I quite want to do it

goinggreatthanks · 21/08/2022 22:35

I was going to say pool cleaning but depends how many people you know with a pool 😁

awwbiscuits · 21/08/2022 22:37

Cleaning jewellery might be something he enjoys? Even I love sitting with a silver cleaning cloth :)

WithFlamingLocksOfAuburnHair · 21/08/2022 22:40

Untying knots? Especially tangled up chain necklaces?

Can I just add to all the rock tumbler suggestions, that yes it is satisfying but the tumblers very very noisy and it takes forever! We have the Nat Geo one, and don't think it's been used for months. It got vanished to the garage due to how loud it was..

Would he like painting by numbers or those diamond sticker pictures? You can get very intricate ones but depends on his fine motor control.
