Soaring energy prices now £6k a year

Sorry if there is another thread on this? Daily Mail have just released an article to say the annual prices are now 'set' to apparently go up to £6k from spring 2023. How is everyone coping?

This is like having another mortgage. How can people find an extra £500 per month after tax? I used to pay £67 a month with Avro now £130 with Octopus and am very frugal not to mention we are in summer.

JulyDreams · 20/08/2022 20:53

Totally agree @PilatesPeach we are on over £200 a month now and we are in a very small 2 bed terrace house with 2 of us.

Also we are not massive earners so this is having such a big impact on us. We have swapped to Aldi which is helping for our food shops but I've noticed even that is going up.

It's like a bad joke with no punchline.
And the best we can hope for are government crumbs.

PilatesPeach · 20/08/2022 20:55

I cannot see how tax cuts will help as many of the poorest do not pay tax. Very depressing the whole thing.

onthefencesitter · 20/08/2022 20:55

we have household income of £91k but we are doing the following:

  1. DH bought a bike so he is cycling to work instead of using the tube so we save money

  2. Being more consistent with bringing packed lunches

  3. Eating out less

  4. I have enough dresses, I don't need anymore

  5. overpaying mortgage

  6. Dyeing my hair at home instead of the salon (and also found a great hairdresser who cuts my hair for £30!)

  7. We buy most groceries at Lidl/Aldi

There is much more we can do... we live in a flat so hopefully it wouldn't be 6k per year! Even if we do manage to move, it would be to another flat and we could not heat/use the future nursery (and maybe limit use of the lounge). So we only use 3 rooms in addition to bathroom and kitchen.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 20/08/2022 20:56

The maths just doesn’t add up.

PilatesPeach · 20/08/2022 20:57

Yes prices are shocking - I needed a couple of black t shirts for work they are now over £20 for 2 - about £12 in February for 2. M&S digestives used to be 50p now 75p - a 50% increase. I physically cannot work anymore hours and live alone.

the tax cuts are bloody ridiculous. How does giving money to the richest help decrease inflation?

tkwal · 20/08/2022 20:58

What is the point of the ombudsman if they keep moving the cap which is supposed to be there to protect us (consumers)?

NorthernPud · 20/08/2022 20:59

Ours will be more as we consistently use more than the average despite being considerate about use. I do worry about low income and vulnerable households, and cost of living post November when businesses really feel the impact

PilatesPeach · 20/08/2022 21:01

One restaurant I know has gone from 30k a year for energy to currently 85k and everyone will soon cut back further on eating out. Places will go bust. More unemployed.

MoistBandana · 20/08/2022 21:02

Standard allowance for the unemployed is £4018.92 a year total.

There's no way they'll ever afford to pay fuel, food, council tax etc out of that.

Lovemusic33 · 20/08/2022 21:03

I don’t pay tax, single parent with disabled dd (I am her carer). We won’t be able to put the heating on this winter, we will have to just wear extra clothes when at home. Many people will struggle but especially those with disabilities and the elderly that are home all the time and need heat. We will survive as we can be out of the house most of the day but many will struggle and if we have a cold winter people will die.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 20/08/2022 21:05

It’s horrific. I’m very concerned. And l think it’s just going to keep going up.

Afterfire · 20/08/2022 21:05

We are one of the lowest income families - 2 disabled on benefits, we receive tax credits and dh works full time on a low wage. Even with the governments payments we will still get into substantial energy debt unless something is done - and that’s with us having no heating on whatsoever.

MargotMoon · 20/08/2022 21:06

They need to reduce the personal allowance, not 'cut taxes'. Reducing tax contributions for high end earners is not the same as increasing the amount you can earn before you have to start paying tax...

One helps the better off, the other helps people who are worse off...guess which one the govt are more interested in doing? 🙄

JustTheOneSwan · 20/08/2022 21:07

I don't have a mortgage luckily or I'd be defaulting. I'm home all day and last year my small pension just covered utilities, just.
this year an oodie won't be enough.

AchillesLastStand · 20/08/2022 21:11

This going to much worse than Covid and will probably kill more people but the government have their heads in the sand. I’m a SAHM and I’m disabled. I’m home all day, don’t have the heating on when home alone, but this is really going to impact people like me who can’t get out the house due to their disability. My DH earns £55k and is considered a high earner (so we’ll probably lose the £400 assistance) but he has two dependents, me and DS 8. We already lose half the child benefit due to his income. We’re going to struggle paying these bills and our mortgage. My poor mum just has her state pension, I can’t even begin to imagine how she’s going to manage.

I know things are going to be hard for a lot of people but think the media are scaremongering. I am old enough to have come through recessions before as well as the 3 day week, Winter of Discontent, etc and we will survive this just as we survived those

They are not scaremongering.

People are literally going to starve or freeze to death or both.

People cannot afford these increases.

mumda · 20/08/2022 21:14

Intergenerational living. People in every room.

Grumpybutfunny · 20/08/2022 21:17

@MargotMoon being fair doesn't win elections, giving handouts doesn't win elections. I would like to see support that is also green so low rate student loan type system for solar panels and batteries, subsidised ground or air source heat pumps etc. I'm hopeful our log burner will be ready for the start of autumn so we will use that to heat the lounge where we sit, big blankets on the beds and minimum heating use. We like tech so don't imagine our electric bill will be cheap but we will have to make do.

I would also like to see them tackling the source of the issue so looking at fracking, nuclear and the North Sea so we are not so dependant on external market. Giving us all £400 back does take the sting out of it a little bit it doesn't solve the issue which is the high wholesale price of gas.

Gas, electricity and water were all nationalised then ...

Im also old enough. This is much worse than any of those. I don’t remember ever not having heating. And the 3 day week, a lot of people still had coal fires so weren’t threatened by loss of heat.
