Period pants: modibodi v cheaper brands?

DC2 has just started her period. When her older sister started a few years ago I bought her some modibodi period underwear. They have been fine, but were £££. I can see that M&S, sainsburys and some others are selling cheaper alternatives. Has anyone tried them and do they do what they need to?

After my daughter having a leak while on a walking tour last weekend, I've been considering these (moribodi or similar). She does wear a pad and those leakproof pants (that are meant to be worn with a pad) as I just can't get my head around the pants alone. Don't you have to change them throughout the day?

My DD (very heavy flow) wears them with a tampon for school. She removes the tampon at lunchtime then the period pants (modibody) last at least until she's home. She has a long school day – leaves at 7:45 and isn't home until about 5:15. Quite often she will just leave the period pants on until bedtime, the modibody ones for heavy flow absorb a lot. In her experience the Primark ones leak – they are much thinner and less absorbent

yoshiblue · 25/08/2022 21:15

I really like the Primark ones. Hated the ones in Sainsburys and M&S were really uncomfortable too.

Badger1970 · 25/08/2022 21:23

I've got about a dozen pairs of the M & S ones. They're uber comfy, don't leak and I just bung them in the wash with everything else. They're also a godsend for leaky bladders if you sneeze unexpectedly Hmm but I've been really pleased with them.

ruralwanderer · 25/08/2022 21:35

I've got a few pairs of Cheeky Pants and really rate them.

CrabbyCat · 25/08/2022 21:44

I have heavy periods and have Modibodi, Wuka and Primark ones.

The Primark ones (I have their medium and heavy flow ones) are only suitable for light periods / days. The absorbent bit only goes half way up the pants. They are perfectly comfortable, but I can only use them for the tail end.

The Modibodi I have the 24 hours one, and for me on my heaviest day they are no such thing - they leak after about 6 or 7 hours. They absorbent bit goes all the way up though, and they have a really nice looking range.

Wuka has been a game changer, their 24 hour ones do what they say and last me from morning until bedtime. Their next level down ones do me for nights / day 3. The heavy adsorbency ones are only available in black though, and they do feel more padded than the Modibodi ones. @Snowdropsarelovely they might be something to look at for your daughter if she's having to wear a tampon with the Modibodi ones?

pastypirate · 25/08/2022 23:17

We have primark, Amazon, cheeky. Dd1 prefers the cheeky ones I think. The Amazon ones have leaked. Primark and cheeky haven't. She rarely uses a pad she's nearly 13.

We have bought modibodi period bikini bottoms and wow they are amazing - pricey but worth it!

Velvian · 25/08/2022 23:22

DD has M&S and they've been really good, especially the night time shorts, which she wears for school, as well as overnight.

I always rinse with cold water ASAP and then wash normally.

Velvian · 25/08/2022 23:23

DD also has modibodi bikini bottoms and they've held up OK so far.

BreadmanAndCake · 25/08/2022 23:23

I have two pairs of the Uniqlo ones which I product tested when Mumsnet were offering it and they are brilliant, highly absorbent and comfy. I usually use reusable pads but the pants are great for overnights and moderate flow days.

Snowdropsarelovely · 26/08/2022 06:09

@CrabbyCat thanks for the recommendation of Wuka, I'll get DD to have a look

My daughter has modi m and s and the thinx brand. All good. She also has the modi swim bottoms which are excellent. All go in the wash. I then hang Con the line to dry. She has about 6 pairs. 2 per day. In winter I put the wash on an extra spin as the pants take ages to dry

howaboutchocolate · 26/08/2022 07:03

I have some from wuka and hey girls. The hey girls ones are more comfortable. I don't know how absorbent they are as I use them as back up for a cup and I'm sure they wouldn't last me more than an hour based on their absorption claims (I have medically extremely heavy periods) but they have never leaked.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/08/2022 07:12

I have also got primark ones and they seem fine.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 26/08/2022 07:16

I use Modibodi because they use the words woman/women and girl/girls on their site. The pants happen to be really good too.

You're not supposed to put them in the normal wash as the fabric softener makes them less effective.

When you use them you rinse them in cold water and then put them in on a cool wash without any fabric softener.

HobnobsChoice · 26/08/2022 07:28

This has been really helpful as I'm looking to buy more pants but can't quite justify full price for ModiBodi again. I've got both their 24 hours pants (more like 12 for me on a heavy day) and their heavy flow ones but they are a polyester/lycra mix which is a bit sweaty in summer although a closer fit and less likely to leak. I have one pair of loveluna which I've had about 4 years and are still absorbent and not bulky at all. I have reusable pads but prefer pants as the pads sometimes slip and can feel bulky or loose.

Off to the Wuka website for the mislabelled ones!

LaTangerina · 26/08/2022 07:30

I bought the Victoria secret period shorties for my daughter & they're perfect no leaks. They can be quickly machine washed & put in the dryer on low too.

My DD wears here with a pad as it stops the leaks

Heatherbell1978 · 26/08/2022 07:56

I have both Modibodi and M&S and a few other brands! I use Modibodi for the first few days as they do feel more secure than the others, then the cheaper ones in the days after that. That said, I've never had an issue with the M&S ones.

Crayfishforyou · 26/08/2022 08:03

i use the modibodi and the primark ones.
I mainly use them for flood defences and non heavy days.
They both work but the modibodi ones seem to be better quality. I can wear pretty tight clothing with modibodi but not the primark ones.

suzyscat · 26/08/2022 08:10

I have modibody, cheeky wipes, random Amazon ones and primark.

Primark are my favourite, by far the most comfortable.

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/08/2022 08:20

The modi bodi are really good although I do just tend to use as cup back up. I do not have the heavy flow ones. The ones I have are nice and thin though which is good under skinny jeans and sports leggings.

The lady days ones seem really nice too. Thicker than midi body. But seem really good.

Abraxan · 26/08/2022 08:36

Dd has a few different makes: mainly Pink, Primark and one if the 'bigger' period pant brands online - can't remember which.

She claims they are all very similar and work the same way for her. She pretty much only ever uses them now, and is looking into the swimsuit versions.

I bought some for the first time last month - from Cheeky Pants, as they had a deal on. So farm so good

Abraxan · 26/08/2022 08:38

Overinvolvedmum · 20/08/2022 13:12

@Violettaa thank you. So you don’t have to rinse or soak them first?

We don't. They just go in the normal ways.
Of particularly heavy we try to put them in a wash same/next day though.

wateraddict · 26/08/2022 08:38

Both my daughter and I have cheeky pants and pads, I use the pads when out in trousers for a while so I can just remove the pad and have the pants there without the faff of changing.

No leaks for either of us and the pants will vary and fit differently according to body shape, so try a few and see what you like! There are heavier and lighter flow options. Lots of brands have a refer a friend option too.

dgirluk · 26/08/2022 08:42

For people who use these and are out all day at work and need to change them, are you getting undressed in a work toilet to change, and then - what do you do with the dirty ones? In a bag in your handbag all day ??

I want to experiment but unsure how to deal with that !

Also - if you don't need to change them (because you're not a heavy enough flow), do you change them for freshness during the day ?
