Where do you buy good quality furniture?

I'm looking for new bedroom furniture: dressing table, bedside tables and chests of drawers. Ordered something from Wayfair and not only was it abysmal quality half the pieces were missing so having spent my Friday evening screwing hundreds of screws into poor quality mdf I then had to chuck it all back in the box and sort it out to be returned for a refund. I'm fed up of cheap substandard stuff.

Where can I buy good quality solid wood furniture? I'm looking for white so a lot of the e.g. Oak furniture places don't work.

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Prefer ready assembled but happy to put something together myself if it is good quality and not mdf that falls apart as soon as you screw something in.

Auctions!!

This!

You’ll be able to buy very good quality furniture, probably very cheaply.

Grananger · 19/08/2022 23:39

Another vote for auctions. God I love ‘em.

RebOrHon · 20/08/2022 00:00

Depends on the style you’re looking for and your budget. Auctions can be good and different sites/sales specialise in different eras. Otherwise, buy direct from the makers or have someone make it for you. Do you have any local joiners who could make something to your design? Rowen and Wren (online) have lovely stuff ; it isn’t cheap - but they’re aiming for longevity not fashion.

Barker and stonehouse if you’re looking for quality

HelloAllll · 20/08/2022 01:29

I love our oak furniture land things - they are fantastic quality. Otherwise barker and Stonehouse

Second hand furniture is ridiculously cheap at the moment, it is incredibly good value. Properly made furniture will last forever! Ok, maybe not forever but certainly generations!

I had some good quality furniture from homes direct 365. Solid and I think it was made to order

Would be useful if they updated their website - it says they are opening soon … on 12 August!

Poppyblush · 20/08/2022 06:53

That’s about Snead Barn interiors.

Charity shops, junk/antique shops.
And a dd has had some fantastic, excellent quality bargains from e.g. Gumtree, Facebook marketplace, inc. an ex John Lewis extending dining table.

try IKEA is good if you like modern furniture and for best kids bedding online shop at baby bedding design

John Lewis. I love looking around London finding hidden gems also

GrouchyKiwi · 21/08/2022 15:25

Another thought: Etsy. I found small businesses that make beautiful furniture on there. We're going to get a large dining table from one of those businesses for about £500 less than the equivalent in a large shop.

Penguintears · 21/08/2022 16:03

Thanks all. Am busy researching all of these.

Vinterior is worth a look, although I am mainly stalking mid-century modern rosewood over there!

"I'm looking for new bedroom furniture: dressing table, bedside tables and chests of drawers."
Have a look at your local auction houses. Most put their catalogue online, so you don't actually have to go there - unless something online looks interesting, in which case definitely go to check that piece of furniture over. If you can't attend the actual auction on the day, you can leave bids there, or participate in the auction online.
