Put my notice in - is this normal?

Put my notice in yesterday morning by email as per company policy. Today I've been locked out of everything, (schedule, training) but have had no response from work even acknowledging my resignation! I've been working there for 10+ years and it kinda hurts that they can't even be bothered to email and let me know they've received the notice!

How much notice do you give and is that what they do to other employees?

Sallyh87 · 18/08/2022 19:28

What do you do? Some professions would require garden leave so you can’t steal customers etc. Though, they should have told you obviously. It might be an admin error and notification of garden leave has been sent to your work email but obviously you can’t access it now.

Letsmoveon · 18/08/2022 19:34

Do you work in an industry with access to sensitive information or are going to work for a competitor? Either way HR or your manager should have told you what would be happening. Or, it’s an error. Speak to HR or your manager.

IQuitUponAStar · 18/08/2022 19:47

Nope, it's a fast food job so nothing sensitive. No impact on colleagues as there's 100+ people working there.

Just feels weird to be locked out of everything yet have had no response from any of the managers!

Notice period is a week and I gave them that.

Well after 10 years id as least expect acknowledgement from my manager!.
If you're locked out of everything can you actually work your weeks notice?

topcat2014 · 18/08/2022 19:53

Are they not used to people working their notice then?

Thefruitbatdancer · 18/08/2022 19:54

That is very strange, especially for a food service role. I thought you worked in the civil service or something from the way you described it.

abovedecknotbelow · 18/08/2022 19:56

Who did you resign to Hr or your line manager?

DancingBeanstalk · 18/08/2022 19:58

Have you been in work since?

Sounds like they terminated it electronically but wanted to speak to you in person.

IQuitUponAStar · 18/08/2022 20:30

Emailed my business manager as is standard.

No I haven't been into work. I've been off on the sick and I'm not well enough to return.

SunnyD44 · 18/08/2022 20:40

No it’s not normal.

I wonder if the being locked out of things was an automatic thing.

But I definitely would be expecting at least an email from the manager.

10 years is a long time!
Good luck with your new job!

LonginesPrime · 18/08/2022 20:44

It's shitty, but it sounds like crossed wires - it's probably just that HR or the manager said "I'll acknowledge them, leave it with me" and then forgot or was too busy, so that everyone thinks someone else has contacted you.

Given that you're on sick leave and not seeing anyone in passing at work, that's my guess anyway.

No I haven't been into work. I've been off on the sick and I'm not well enough to return.

Fair enough then on their part.

IQuitUponAStar · 18/08/2022 21:25

Why do you say that? I've been absolutely clear with them about my illness and I was a very reliable employee before I got ill!

Fair enough then on their part.

To not even send a one setence acknowledgement is piss poor, not "fair enough"

FrangipaniBlue · 18/08/2022 22:35

Did you speak to your line manager?

I'll be honest, as a line manager I'd consider it pretty rude if one of my team (especially of 10 years?!) simply sent an email out of the blue without having a conversation with me too.....

DancingBeanstalk · 18/08/2022 22:39

Yeah, I think the fact you emailed them and didn’t even speak to them first, and that you haven’t been into work makes this fairly standard.

implantsandaDyson · 18/08/2022 23:26

Is it McDonalds? My dd handed her notice in last year, she hadn't been there long at all but she was locked out of rotas etc, no word from anybody. I still have uniform that was barely worn washed and ready to hand back. As far as I'm aware she heard from nobody after her informing them that she was leaving.

thenewduchessoflapland · 18/08/2022 23:28

Sounds like McDonald's especially with the business manager and online schedule

IQuitUponAStar · 18/08/2022 23:29

Is it really rude? They've been getting weekly updates and I did say in my last one I didn't know if or when I'd be able to return. I'm really struggling with my health and driving 30+ mins each way just for a chat isn't something I'm up to doing at the moment.

I've followed the procedure in the handbook exactly!

OP posts:
Babyroobs · 19/08/2022 00:14

I still have access to my previous work email 7 months after leaving !

balalake · 19/08/2022 06:49

I think you should have spoken first. Common decency, don't sink to other people's low levels.

Of course you were rude. You’ve worked there 10 years and you didn’t even speak to them in person to say you’re resigning.
