I need a new egg kettle. Is it worth spending lots of money or are all kettles created equally?

My faithful egg kettle has gone to the small-appliance skip in the sky. It was a Russell Hobbs.

My other kettle (for tea etc) is a fancy Kitchen Aid one that I got as a present from my mum a few years ago.

M very tempted to splash out on another KA to have coordinating water and eggs kettles in nice, but different colours, but that is probably a big waste as I only use the egg kettle once or twice a week.

Are cheap kettles just as good? I had the Russell Hobbs one for about 15 years, but remember it was expensive at the time.

Are thi microwave egg things any good?

Itsmemaggie · 17/08/2022 23:52

Just had a quick gander through the kitchenaide website and there are no egg boilers so maybe the OP did mean an actual kettle - WTF

I like to cook eggs in teacups in the microwave. But if I want a boiled egg, I have a special little saucepan.

All normal people have a special little saucepan for eggs

i have read the word kettle so many times in this thread that it no longer looks like a real word. Fascinated that there’s an egg cooking contraption that isn’t a pan but can’t remember your question, apologies.

Egg boilers seem to be a thing.

Assuming the OP means an egg boiler - I have one and love it. It uses much less water than a saucepan so is more energy efficient, and you always get perfect eggs. The major downside is that I have to google how to boil an egg normally whenever I’m boiling eggs outside of my own house 😳

Same here, DH is the egg-eater in our house and I never got it right when cooking an egg on the hob (we take turns making breakfast on the weekend), the egg boiler has been a game changer. I now. refuse to cook his egg when we are on holiday.

Takes a lot less time and water

Well I use a mikpan for boiled eggs, takes 3 minutes and about 1/2 pint of water.

Cant see any real savings in energy or water to make buying an appliance just for that worthwhile.

Thanks everyone!

Polite to be thanking but why haven't you answered what an egg kettle is

Because it's been answered multiple times in the thread already?

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 18/08/2022 14:49

Well, I'm happy to admit I'd never heard of egg kettles till now!

CuriouslyDifferent · 19/03/2023 21:53

Do they do a bacon kettle too? That would make Saturday mornings so much easier. Hash brown teapot, black pudding strainer, and maybe we could get a fresh rolls kettle too.

Crossing fingers. Am off to google this range now.

ODFOx · 19/03/2023 22:06

Egg kettles, cake pop maker, individual pie maker and the ilk are specialist gadgets that do the same thing as you can do with normal kitchen equipment but are specialised for a specific purpose.
If we ate boiled eggs for breakfast every day I might be tempted but we don't.
I don't think that KA make one OP: they are a US brand and they don't eat soft boiled eggs (weirdos). Egg cups are rare as hens teeth in the US too.

gogohmm · 19/03/2023 22:07

Did anyone discover what an egg kettle is? I'm intrigued now? @SimplifyMe did you find one? I'm guessing it's an American thing as you described the kettle as a tea kettle and I've only ever heard it called that stateside
