I need a new egg kettle. Is it worth spending lots of money or are all kettles created equally?

My faithful egg kettle has gone to the small-appliance skip in the sky. It was a Russell Hobbs.

My other kettle (for tea etc) is a fancy Kitchen Aid one that I got as a present from my mum a few years ago.

M very tempted to splash out on another KA to have coordinating water and eggs kettles in nice, but different colours, but that is probably a big waste as I only use the egg kettle once or twice a week.

Are cheap kettles just as good? I had the Russell Hobbs one for about 15 years, but remember it was expensive at the time.

Google would tell you much faster than posting the same question as 50 other people on this thread and then waiting for an answer. That's if your Google works like my Google, of course...

Wait... that makes so much more sense. I've never heard it called that in my life but I'm relieved to hear that OP doesn't have a normal kettle reserved for boiling eggs!

PowerPack · 17/08/2022 22:56

Technically a kettle is any vessel used for boiling liquids and what we call a kettle, with a handle and a spout, is a teakettle.

Egg kettle is new.to me though.

Just googled egg kettles on the back of this thread and found out you can boil eggs in a kettle?

Mind blown.

dippy kettle eggs tomorrow

You can but your next cup of tea will taste eggy.

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 17/08/2022 22:59

Well OP hasn’t come back. So I guess she went ahead and spent 100£ on an egg boiling gadget.

ChickpeaFlour · 17/08/2022 23:04

I wanted to discuss kettles but now confused 😄
if anyone else wants to discuss kettles, I regret buying mine as it’s plastic not metal and I didn’t realise that could be less healthy with obviously boiling water (does it contaminate it or something ). It looks lovely though .

for egg kettles I have no clue as use a pan like everyone else I know. Or our Thermomix as it’s more fun.

LittleBearPad · 17/08/2022 23:06

Who knew such things existed!

Would love to have enough room in my kitchen to store such a niche item!

Whycantibetangy · 17/08/2022 23:10

My kettle lights up when its boiling and changes colour when its ready. Its not shaped like an egg though 🤷🏻‍♀️

hope that helps

jessyjo2 · 17/08/2022 23:18

I have a very basic egg boiler, plain dome one. Very handy for boiled eggs, never crack etc. Cheap one fine.

Eeksteek · 17/08/2022 23:26

So I’ve garnered what an egg kettle is, but not why you need one. Why can’t one kettle do eggs and tea/coffee etc water (obviously not at the same time)? Or why not buy one of those dedicated egg boiler doo dahs if that’s what you want.

You can cook eggs in virtually anything. A saucepan springs to mind, but the instant pot and halogen oven also do them (no, they don’t explode). Wonder if you can air fry them?

So given the multitude of things you certainly already have that will cook them, I can’t fathom why anyone would want a dedicated kettle. Takes all sorts, I suppose.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/08/2022 23:27

WeAreBob · 17/08/2022 22:16

Do you mean egg cooker? The little thing with a dome that you put eggs I'm after piercing them?

There really isn't much different. I had an expensive one and an £8 one. Exactly the same.

Having just googled in fascination I think the OP means an actual kettle dedicated to actually boiling actual eggs. This is not as normal as you think it is OP!

The egg dome the PP above is referring to is more practical and environmentally friendly OP, and it is certainly cheaper.

Every day is a school day..

Cynderella · 17/08/2022 23:32

I love a gadget and did briefly consider one of those units you cook eggs in, but even I can't justify buying something to turn an egg and boiling water into a boiled egg when I have a drawer full of saucepans. You'll be telling me next I need an electric baked bean warmer with a range of temperatures and timings.

I’m not sure this is what she does mean you know, because my Google just brought up lots of articles about boiling eggs in actual kettles, AND the OP mentioned in her post getting a hundred quid egg kettle to match her normal kettle but in a different colour. Also I would this gadget an egg boiler thingie and in no way would it tone with any kettle.

OP you have to come back and tell us what you mean!!!

HinchcliffeandMurgatroyd · 17/08/2022 23:35

Isn’t a “tea kettle” just another name for a kettle?

I know none of this matters much but it’s confusing.

Leafy3 · 17/08/2022 23:35

An egg kettle?

You be weird, op.

ihatethefuckingmuffin · 17/08/2022 23:37

No idea why that link was so massive

Although do like the idea Of this egg thing - boils, poaches and omelettes for ds who loves eggs and is autistic but I’ve got an allergy, and he often burns them as I cannot supervise

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2022 23:37

Would now be the time to ask the OP if she also has a matching fish kettle?Grin

Leafy3 · 17/08/2022 23:38

Wait. Do you mean a Smeg kettle? Was autocorrect at play?

I still don't know why you'd have two kettles on the go but it's less weird than an egg kettle.

Leafy3 · 17/08/2022 23:39

@ihatethefuckingmuffin but how would an egg kettle work? Even a soft boiled egg takes about 5m in boiling water...

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2022 23:39

Though in view of the OPs name ... just use a small saucepan like the rest of us do. Boiling an egg is as simple as - well, boiling an egg.

Tallisker · 17/08/2022 23:41

Glad someone mentioned a fish kettle!

borntobequiet · 17/08/2022 23:42

I like to cook eggs in teacups in the microwave. But if I want a boiled egg, I have a special little saucepan.

I think OP just started this thread as a wind up though.

Itsmemaggie · 17/08/2022 23:45

Assuming the OP means an egg boiler - I have one and love it. It uses much less water than a saucepan so is more energy efficient, and you always get perfect eggs. The major downside is that I have to google how to boil an egg normally whenever I’m boiling eggs outside of my own house 😳

No idea.
Still baffled and feeling smug about the tea kettle. £150+ for 4 cups of tea. My light up cheap arse thing makes 8 tea, chocolates, coffee and can make different tea flavours come to think of it.
Oh and helps reduce pasta cooking time 😂
