House spiders - how many have you seen this year?

I'm getting fed up of seeing them every night. I don't usually see one until September so this is early for me. Luckily dp will remove them but it's still not pleasant. My worst night so far we had 3!
The dc started off being terrified of them but now they think one on the wall is commonplace.

How many have you all seen, if any so far?

@keeprunningupthathill 😀 right that's the only type of house i can live in then

ItsMyUsername · 17/08/2022 18:49

Yes we do live rurally and I hate it!

I can cope with 'normal' smaller spiders but hate these big house spiders.

Can I ask how you all remove the spiders? I'd love to be able to do it myself.

I'm feeling really anxious about going to bed tonight as I'm sure there will be one somewhere.

I have a phobia and I'm not enjoying the last few days at all. We had 3 just last night!

One in DDs bed when I was changing the sheets, I managed to stand on some furniture whilst shrieking and get a glass over that one so DP could come in and evict him.

Then the cat was chasing one across the floor, so big I wasn't sure which was which... DP picked that one up and saved it from being bopped to death.

Then there was another huge one chilling on the ceiling, but I can't sleep knowing they're nearby, so despite it seeming well behaved and not inclined to chase me around the house or sit on my head, DP released that one into the wild too.

I'm not convinced bed spider and cat spider weren't the same one, if I'm honest. It could have come back in a window.

I think it's because it's so hot, we've got all our windows permenantly on the half latch thing, so they hide in the frame and then mosey on in when it starts raining.

I don't want to hurt them, I'd just appreciate it if they'd treat me as I do them and give me a wide, wide berth. But no. They 'want to be togevver'. It only seems to be me they follow around, they ignore DP completely. They'll chase me across a room...

In an emergency op, I have been able to put a wine glass over a spider, holding the stem keeps my hand away from the spider and I find that helps. Then card under - something nice and big so your hand isn't near the glass, and flip, again holding the stem.

A normal glass or holding the card pressed onto the glass with it upside down means I'm too close to the spider and although I know it can't get me (or indeed that it wouldn't do anything if it did 'get' me!) I panic and drop the lot.

Three, I only remove them and pop them outside if they are in my bedroom. They don’t bother me.

SummerLovin123 · 17/08/2022 19:58

Not many
But for once not living in a very old house!!

ScampiFlies · 17/08/2022 21:22

It's one of these we have.

I was hoping I wasn't alone in this! Also noticed more, also noticed they're bigger but also noticed they're faster. My gosh can they run! Ashamed to admit, I always call for dp and when one has been "rescued" from my bedroom (their favourite place apparently) I spend the night certain one is crawling over me so pps on the face comment has me in the fears 😆

LadyHaversham · 17/08/2022 23:04

About 87,000.

TwoMonthsOff · 17/08/2022 23:06

I’ve had three, I like them though, Not as ‘ pets’ but I feel sad for them as everyone hates them and they’re entitled to a peaceful life
i do try to relocate to the shed

PolishingCandles · 17/08/2022 23:19

Two whoppers so far. Flattened by a well aimed boot.
My harvestman, who I was nurturing has gone AWOL. Skiving in my hour of need!
I try to keep hold of them as they kill the big buggers, but he's legged it somewhere, the traitor!

Thespidersanctury · 17/08/2022 23:22

Too many to count. They’re in every nook and cranny. We live in a bog standard house on a bog standard estate. The entire spider population seems to have decamped to my house!

I think this one has to be the largest yet.

This one nearly made me cry today. It went missing for about 5 minutes which was not much fun. I had my two toddlers with me so I had to be brave!!

A few months ago I saw the biggest spider I've ever seen... Since then I've seen about 5 more of a similar size! Every time I get over the last ordeal, another one pops out from somewhere!! Worst year ever for spiders, and it's only August...

Only 3 but gigantic. Legs touching the sides of the glass I captured them in on all sides! I'm not freaked at all by spiders but I was astonished by the size.
We are in Plymouth

Confuciusornis · 17/08/2022 23:39

Omg no pictures please no pictures. I’m traumatised by the night time face crawling stories too. We’ve had four so far, which bodes ill for September. I fill the house with the spindly fellas as they kill and eat the big guys but this year there are just so bloody many. I get the chickens to eat them when possible. Otherwise DH puts them out or, in extremis, I deploy the vacuum cleaner.

EmmiJay · 17/08/2022 23:40

shudders I've only had one 1" buggery thing a few weeks ago and thats it. Maybe because I went mad with two cans of red Raid and sprayed every single window, door frame and skirting board. Hate the bastards!

supersonicspider · 17/08/2022 23:56

We remove 1 to 3 false window spiders from our bedrooms/living room/bathroom per day. Also have quite a few of those see-through ones, and just 2 brown house spiders. One could easily down the diameter of a mug!! Rural area. Finding a mangled false widow in your bed in the morning is terrifying.

Haybo26 · 18/08/2022 00:07

Oh my we have had some huge ones here. My DH is terrified of them. This is one I evicted last week!

I'm arachnophobic, sorry if I've spelt it wrong, but basically scared of 🕷, I'm OK with little tiny ones, but anything bigger than a 10p coin I lose the plot! Wish I wasn't such a drip lol

Liquorish · 18/08/2022 00:33

Can’t look at the pictures. They’re getting bigger and more and more of them every year. Wish September was over already. I’ve had to evict three that were far too big for my liking and screamed the neighbourhood down because I thought I felt one tickling my hand when I was carrying it outside in a jug.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/08/2022 00:39

Fucking loads. I took four out of DD’s room yesterday - range of sizes, none massive. The day before that I found an enormous dead spider under her bed. Glad I didn’t see that one alive!

stillvicarinatutu · 18/08/2022 00:51

I'm in a new build and I seem to have loads and some big buggers.

Sadly my little room mate (had one in my bedroom for weeks and watched him make his way round the room and back several times) has dropped from the ceiling and appears to have shuffled off this mortal coil . I'd got rather used to him . He never strayed from where the wall meets ceiling . I was enjoying watching him in his manoeuvres.

The big ones I'm not so keen on . Had one on stairs that I narrowly missed stepping on and one in my en suite . Another big un in the sink . I've heard putting them outside doesn't help as they die quite easily and house spiders are meant to live in houses 🤷🏻‍♀️. I felt terribly bad as I hoovered one up thinking I could deposit it elsewhere but they are fragile little things and it didn't survive the ride .
Now I just try and ignore them . As long as they don't touch me , I won't touch them .

LadyHaversham · 20/08/2022 20:40

I bloody hate spiders and they ar E multiplying and I get cross ffs I only cleaned that yesterdays

lightand · 20/08/2022 20:41

double the normal amount

we live rural.
I put them outside. But if they too numerous I shall have to consider more permanent disposal

Work2live · 20/08/2022 21:16

We’ve had two huge ones already in the last couple of weeks, and LOADS of little ones.

Very early this year. I’m dreading the next few weeks!
