Ok people - I need your ‘stop itching’ remedies

It’s like I’ve got fleas (I don’t) or chicken pox (I don’t).

We have swarms if fruit flies (I know they don’t bite so may be completely irrelevant) at the moment and today I am itchy all over. It’s driving me crazy and my arms and legs are raw. I think I have a tiny bug bite on my backside.

My skin is burning! I’ve taken an anti histamine (usually helps) but that’s not helping at all.

Cold shower? Bathe in yoghurt? Aloe Vera gel? I don’t think I’ve got and calamine lotion or anything like that.

owy ☹️

Watching this because I feel the absolute same OP :(

Although you have just reminded me to take an antihistamine!

Also any tips on getting rid of bustard fruit flies! I've also wondered if they can bite

WibbleBibble · 15/08/2022 20:02

Aloe vera or calamine lotion can help, keeping cool helps as well, and if you have hydrocortisone cream that will help too. Also sometimes distracting yourself can help

MarchionessOfMayhem · 15/08/2022 20:03

1% menthol in aqueous cream - a pharmacist can mix it for you! Total magic!!

(stupidly long link just takes you to a zap it on Amazon)

KittenKong · 15/08/2022 20:05

Thanks. Sending DS off the the chemist!

fruit flies can’t bite because they don’t have mouths (or teeth or something) but apparently they can make your skin itch if they land on you (must have dirty little feet).

Witch hazel works well, very cooling

user1471453601 · 15/08/2022 20:08

When you can get to your surgery, ask for dermol 500 lotion. It's the only thing that eases my itching. Oh, and fenofenadine (sp?) Antihistamines work better for me than other antihistamines.

I also only ever use E45 bath oil in the shower. Only shower every other day and always in lukewarm water.

Itchy skin is something I've lived with for years. So I've tried just about everything. This routine is the best I've found so far

Ooh I didn't know know this, although I did think they couldn't bite. Disgusting but "dirty little feet" did make me snort 😆

aliceinshackles · 15/08/2022 20:13

My dogs cooling mat. When I had covid my hands, feet and torso was covered in tiny itchy blisters. No tablets or potions worked.
Worked and I managed some sleep

KittenKong · 15/08/2022 20:15

Oh my god the rain is come! I’m going to run around outside for a bit. It smells wonderful.

vipersnest1 · 15/08/2022 20:20

@KittenKong, maybe you are one of my people?
I can smell when rain is coming and like you think it's lovely. Smile

KittenKong · 15/08/2022 20:32

I can smell it coming too (and feel it and see when the sky colour changes to yellow before it comes - DH says I’m a witch) and the different smells when it comes down!

We are in the city but it’s a rural smell we are getting tonight. Must be all the poor grass, trees and plants crying out for it!

Eurax cream from the pharmacy tomorrow.

Tonight, run a cool bath ( better be a shallow one in light of the drought!) And swish a popsock containing a good handful of porridge oats around in it before you get in for a soak.

Fozzleyplum · 15/08/2022 20:35

If the oats work, ask the pharmacist for Aveeno colloidal oatmeal bath powder. It's less hassle than the popsock method.

dudsville · 15/08/2022 20:35

Fexofenadine, like the pp, this can be bought online. Check dosage for your situation. I use 180 for urticaria.

Flowersintheattic57 · 15/08/2022 20:39

Put some oats in the blender and whizz to a powder. Tip a cup or so into the bath, not too hot. Very soothing.

Fozzleyplum · 15/08/2022 20:57

OP, the smell of rain on parched earth has a name all of its own. It's called petrichor.

either you're my son or he has an identical routine to this. Works for him to prevent eczema.

seething1234 · 15/08/2022 21:04

Itchy skin can be a sign of liver problems not trying to diagnose anything but just to be mindful of it.

PleaseStopExplaining · 15/08/2022 21:08

like a PP I’m not trying to diagnose anything but a few years ago I was so itchy, sure I must be allergic to something but couldn’t work out what. Then an unrelated blood test diagnosed anaemia and sorting out my iron sorted the itching.

Kittybelle123 · 15/08/2022 21:16

If you have fruit out put corks in the bowl with it - absolute game changer for me in terms of limiting fruit flies.

Can't help on the itching front but I sincerely hope the rain helps one way or another!

KittenKong · 15/08/2022 21:18

So now I have to drink some bottles of wine?

ok?
