I swallowed a wasp and it stung me around the oesophageal area

I was super busy running around as it was my dd's 30th bbq with lots of guests and I literally ran over to take a swig of the punch she'd made from my glass ( stupidly didn't look in the glass ) and didn't realise that I had swallowed it until it was nearly the back fo my throat and I was swallowing it ( it was a good size mouthful ).

For some reason every summer in august we get an awful lot of wasps ( we live rurally ) and I should have checked.

I just wanted to say check your glasses before you drink anything sweet!

It stung me immediately but luckily not in the throat it was sooooo painful Sad sort of at the top do your stomach area ( I think where your oesophagus is ) lord it hurt all night and when I went to sleep after whacking down an antihistamine and two paracetamol plus two ibruprofen it was wearing off.

Luckily this morning all the pain was gone but bloody hell it hurt like hell and I won't lie I did panic a bit.

Anyone else ever been stung I really by a wasp? A guest at the party phoned their Mum who's a nurse and she advised lots of water and an antihistamine.

OUCH!!!

That sounds seriously painful. Did you swallow the wasp as well or mange to spit it out? Can imagine you being super paranoid about drinks outside now - as we all should be.

hope you feel better soon

You poor saus'! Yes, I was stung in the throat when I was 10, by a wasp that had really liked the look of my jam sandwich. An awful lot of ice was ingested afterwards. Antihistamene is a very good idea.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 14/08/2022 18:41

Shit! That's horrible!
Hate wasps bloody horrible things.
Eat lots of ice cream to sooth your poor tum.
Almond magnum's highly recommend Smile

SonSonSon · 14/08/2022 18:43

Oh god, I hope you’re OK. Worse nightmare material 😵

myteethwerefine · 14/08/2022 18:45

I remember as a primary aged child my friend's mum being absolutely fanatical at getting us to check our cans of fizzy drinks for wasps if we'd put it down and left it for even a minute. She put the fear of god into me and I assumed, until now, that swallowing a wasp and it stinging you internally meant certain death due to, amongst other things, swelling of the throat and suffocation. I am sorry that it was so painful but am glad (and amazed) you survived OP!

Wagsandclaws · 14/08/2022 19:11

Honestly I thought I was going to swell up and have to call 999 I absolutely shat myself.

I've been stung by wasps before so I know I'm not allergic but fuck me that hurt like hell. Throbbed for hours and I couldn't go to sleep till it was abating.

It's true, I'll never put a can down or any kind of drink in the summer again without putting something over the top.

If I'm honest a couple of the guests had put napkins over their drinks so that should have told me really but I was so busy and didn't even feel the wasp in the mouthful I swallowed till it was at the swelling stage at the back of my throat.

People were advising me to put my fingers down my throat 5 mins after the event but the by that time it was probably dead and had done it's work by stinging me inside.

Gosh!

I knew an old lady who swallowed a fly,
I don't know why, perhaps she'll...

Well anyway I hope you recover soon. 🙂

ItWasJustifiedHeWasACunt · 14/08/2022 19:21

If this was me I'd have been screaming so loud the whole of England would be hearing me. I'm so glad you're okay - I would absolutely shit myself x

WarmSausageTea · 14/08/2022 19:29

Bloody hell, that sounds really upsetting, hope you’re on the mend now.

Can I just add that dead wasps can still sting. I found this out the hard way.

haveiever · 14/08/2022 20:28

😧I think the fear of my throat swelling shut would make me panic so much that my throat would indeed swell shut

Justdontgetit000 · 14/08/2022 21:28

Oh my god this is the stuff of nightmares. Wasps are my only phobia, I’m ridiculously terrified of them. I’m so glad you’re ok. I feel weird after reading this!

RumbleStrutt · 14/08/2022 22:13

I imagine it’s not just the pain but also the panic you can’t expel it/swat it away and as you say the unknown of being stung in the throat.

Pointless bullying little bastards.

ToppCat · 14/08/2022 22:37

Oh lord, that must have been so painful. I’m allergic to wasp stings so it is a helpful reminder, thank you.

AdoraBell · 14/08/2022 22:47

Jeez I will not tell my DH about this thread, he’s terrified of wasps and bees. He saw his brother stung in the mouth when they were young.

Glad the pain wore off OP

In my teens I used to plait my hair and pin it up when it was hot. A wasp got caught under my plaits and I couldn’t get the little fecker out, sting me about 15 times as it was panicking.

FannyFifer · 14/08/2022 23:20

This is the stuff of nightmares. Glad u are ok, sounds bloody horrific.

Bananice · 14/08/2022 23:37

This exact thing happened to our six year old daughter last summer: she swallowed a bee when it landed in her can of lemonade: we only found out when she started vomiting and vomited up the bee. Unfortunately, it was her first ever bee sting and we didn't know if she was allergic to bee stings. So for her, it was straight to A&E, and they had to put a camera down her nose to check to see if there was any swelling. Very scary, but all is well that ends well now, and she is very careful with drinking sweet drinks!

Bananice · 14/08/2022 23:38

Meant to say, her sting was actually in the throat. What started out as a lovely summer's evening in July ended up in hospital very unexpectedly!

Weepah · 14/08/2022 23:47

My elderly neighbor was stung on his tongue when a wasp climbed on his sandwich. He was allergic and his whole mouth started to swell up, he threw himself in his car and drove to the hospital, screeched to stop out front and ran in passing out just as got through the front door. And he survived 😄

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 14/08/2022 23:50

My friend's dad told me that a colleague of his had died like this. He hadn't noticed a wasp in the foam of his beer, gulped it, wasp stung him inside his throat which swelled up and suffocated him! Horrific.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 15/08/2022 00:16

Damn, that is HORRIBLE. What a nasty, nasty experience.

I have such an extreme fear of wasps and hornets that I won't even eat or drink outside or wear scented products in late summer to early autumn. I don't mind spiders, snakes or non-aggressive bees, but wasps I cannot hack. It's embarrassing and silly to be so fearful of an insect, and I've tried to conquer it for years, but it's almost a reflex to scarper when one comes into my field of vision. I just cannot bear them near me.

I had one inside my dress once. I tore it off, right down to my underwear, without a single care for what anyone else thought; about the only thing that could ever persuade me to disrobe in public! The only thing that mattered in that moment was getting the horrible thing away from me.

Sorry you went through this. Glad you are now ok.

Yogibearspicnic · 15/08/2022 07:56

You've not noticed any wasp-like tendencies developing yet? Hanging around picnics? Cravings for fizzy drinks?

Just thinking you could develop a wasp version of Spider-Man type powers as you ingested it.
