Hi we are visiting Dublin next February for the first time from the UK.
Never been to Ireland so really excited to do a few days over there.
Can anyone recommend some nice places to visit/things to do?
Also reasonable priced places to eat ?
Thanks in advance

If you have time, drive up to Belfast where there's lots to do and your money will go further.

Butterfly44 · 14/08/2022 17:04

When I went:
Visit Trinity Hall for the fantastic library
Do a walking tour of the city
Visit temple bar area
Have dinner at a lively pub with Irish dancing
Guinness or whisky experience
Day tour to Belfast - see the giants causeway and visit either titanic exhibition or do a political tour which is so enlightening about the conflict in NI and period of the Troubles

Savage, but love it! 🤣

Epic museum is excellent it’s all about emigration and it’s digital so not many physical exhibits so maybe doesn’t sound great but if you look it up on trip advisor it’s almost entirely 5 stars. The museum under the GPO about the easter uprising. Trinity for the book of Kells and the long gallery (I think it’s called that) Brown Thomas is good for a wander round in the same kind of way Harrods can be in London.

I’m from Belfast and I love Dublin so don’t try and squeeze two amazing cities into one city break, they both deserve to be visited separately it’s a bit like telling someone who is visiting Cardiff to go to Liverpool for a day!

Kilmainham Gaol was fascinating

I've done this before and enjoyed it too.

I always do a bus tour if there's one when I'm away. So many things (generally, not just Dublin!) that I've discovered because of doing a bus tour.

OP - when you say "we", does that include any DC? If so, ages?

Cynderella · 14/08/2022 19:01

The gaol is interesting - better if you know something about the Easter Rising. The Guinness/Jamesons experiences were worth doing - we did both from the hop on hop off bus which was a good way of seeing the main sites and getting your bearings. We stayed in Temple Bar which meant we didn't have to go far in the evenings - plenty of good food, live music, bars etc. Lovely city to walk around.

Sidebrook · 14/08/2022 19:03

The Guinness Storehouse is a fab experience, as is EPIC. Have a wander around Grafton Street and all the side streets. The bars are great.

101 Talbot is a fab restaurant and Sophies Rooftop Bar and restaurant is a great experience and has great views!

Joolsin · 14/08/2022 19:05

Viking Splash tour is fun, particularly with children - and it covers a lot of the usual sights plus a river/docks bit too.

Twawmyarse · 14/08/2022 19:20

My favourite city!

Definitely have a wander round grafton street but if you're staying in The centre you won't be able to avoid that anyway. Other things we do every time we go:

Wander round St stephens green park, go for dinner in Wilde (in the Westbury Hotel), go to Bewleys for afternoon tea, definitely go to Temple Bar for some traditional live music and a pint or two and also the Dawson Lounge which is dublins smallest pub is worth a visit as is the Horsehoe Bar in the Shelbourne Hotel. Bailey's bar is great for a cocktail or two.

We never make big plans when we go - i just love wandering around the place.

sidheandlight · 14/08/2022 19:21

I also agree, Kilmainham Gaol was the best.
National Museum of Ireland Natural History has just reopened, if you'd be interested in that kind of thing and it is free with an optional donation.

TigerRag · 14/08/2022 19:22

Rock and roll museum. OK, most of it is U2 and Thin Lizzy (not a fan of either!) but it was still interesting.

ovenproof · 14/08/2022 19:23

Start saving now!! Very expensive. Are you travelling with children or is it an adult only trip?

To be honest Belfast is so depressing, I fucked off to Derry as soon as I could.

MrsJackRackham · 14/08/2022 19:28

St Michan's church tour is fantastic if you're into that sort of thing ☠️

PopcornAndWine · 14/08/2022 19:39

Visit the two cathedrals, St Patrick's and Christchurch. Irish Whiskey Museum (better than Jameson's Distillery). Museum of Literature on Stephen's Green. Ride the Dart out to Howth and walk around the harbour. Little Museum of Dublin. Malahide Castle & gardens. Glasnevin cemetery. Guinness Storehouse.

There's plenty to do! I live here Smile

Restaurants - really depends what kind of food you like! Millstone on Dame Street is one really good one.

Fleurdecerisier · 14/08/2022 19:49

Another Dublin resident here. Agree with any of the whiskey distilleries (Jameson, Pearse Lyons or Teelings) or the Guinness Storehouse and Kilmainham Gaol. The hop on/hop off is a good way to get to them because while Dublin is compact, you would feel the walk if the weather is poor (likely in February!).

For food and drinks there are several nice places around Dawson Street and South William Street (both within a few minutes' walk of Grafton Street) which are also great for people watching. I wouldn't call it reasonably priced but Sole on South William Street is second to none for seafood if you're a fan. Fallon and Byrne (the Irish answer to Fortnum and Mason) has a nice restaurant also and if you like Japanese food then Yamamori is a good call.

Other than the GPO I would avoid the O'Connell Street area. It has gone way downhill since Covid made the city too quiet and it just doesn't feel particularly safe anymore, sadly.

Lurleene · 14/08/2022 19:58

I second a lot if the previous suggestions and would like to add The Jeannie Johnston famine ship for giving a real sense of history.

rumred · 14/08/2022 20:04

St michans is great. As is kilmainham. And the writers museum.
Cornucopia does the best food
A trip to the coast is good too if you have the time/weather. Easy on the dart/train

Good grief we'll have poor OP standing on Malin Head contemplating chucking herself in at this rate.
My Dublin knowledge is 20 years out of date but I liked the national photographic archive which is in Temple Bar and does free exhibitions IIRC.

Howth is nice and the place to go for seafood restsurants.

If you happen to be near Baggot Street and surrounds you can get some nice photos of Georgian houses. The Baggot Mile has some decent pubs too. We used to go to Millers Pizza Kitchen, put our names down for a table then go for a drink in Searson's next door while we waited.

JustDanceAddict · 14/08/2022 20:16

I know Dublin well and agree re the gaol, Guinness hop house, grafton st, temple bar, st Stephen’s green, Viking tour, trinity college
also coast on the dart

Wateringthegarden · 14/08/2022 20:17

If you have any spare time catch the Dart train from town, out to Dun Laoghaire and go to Sandycove, loads of lovely places for lunch nearby.

The views are incredible. You go past the Aviva stadium (Rugby) and then the train hugs the coast.

If you have extra time stay on the dart to Killiney for the most stunning views. You also go past the bottom of Bono's garden on the train though you can't see it 😀

You could stop off for a pint at Finnegans pub in Dalkey for a more realistic Irish pint.

Baldrickhasaplan · 14/08/2022 20:21

We had a brilliant weekend in Dublin this year. The Little Museum is great. EPIC is a fantastic museum. We enjoyed the Chester Beatty Art Gallery which also has a good cafe. The National Gallery too.

PopcornAndWine · 14/08/2022 21:16

Also the Leprechaun Museum. Nothing like as cheesy as it sounds, it's actually a really interesting museum about Celtic mythology.
