Not sure how to word or phrase this other than its asdas promoting their basic brands , a trolley full for around £30.77

I figured fellow mumsnetters will debate your perspectives, on the promotion.

To me I don’t see what their is to debate, they have made an effort to put together a range of affordable food which can only be a postive at the moment surely?

I would presume that, but this is mumsnet

Geez.. the fact that this is what we’ve come to, that for some families this will be through no choice of their own, what their weekly shop looks like. A shopping trolley full of cheap, processed food, that is severely lacking in nutrients.

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 18:37

where's the fruit & veg?

DesignerRecliner · 11/08/2022 18:40

I find it staggering that they've not included a bag of spuds, carrots, bananas and apples, all of which are pennies and would add some 'greenery' to the cart. Also porridge oats, milk, rice etc, true cupboard staples.

Unfortunately ultra processed foods are the only thing a lot of people can afford Sad

tjey do have plenty in the range. I have assumed this is a selection of easy to store longer life products

whalleyt · 11/08/2022 18:45

Didn't think of that, just took it at face value.

girlmom21 · 11/08/2022 18:48

It's great that foods affordable but it reiterates the point that it's much cheaper to eat processed shit than healthy balanced meals

MoodyTwo · 11/08/2022 18:48

I think it's brilliant, I know what to look for on shelf when I need to save money, they have increased the smart price range by i think 100+ products , and the packing is so much better than the basic white

germsandcoffee · 11/08/2022 18:52

The yellow box weetabix are delicious and my very picky eater child loves the yellow packaged lasagna.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/08/2022 19:11

This isn’t about the fruit and veg, it’s clearly store cupboard/freezer stuff. There will also be families who won’t (by choice) be interested in lots of fruit and veg as they don’t buy it usually anyway.

GreenIsle · 11/08/2022 19:14

There is a full range of fruits, vegetables plus meat in this range if people bothered to look properly are the whole list.

WaitingForWinter1 · 11/08/2022 19:15

Not terribly healthy - no fruit, veg, meat or fish. On the whole, it's ok but very basic indeed

WaitingForWinter1 · 11/08/2022 19:17

GreenIsle I think the OP just meant the trolley full, as shown in the photo. I've been buying some of the fruit and veg, and it's no different to the usual stuff.

I dont have an Asda nearby so don't know the details! Are they advocating that shoppers should only buy what's in the basket or advertising a particular range?

I don't see the problem if it's the latter

hotfroth · 11/08/2022 19:29

I get they're advertising their basics range, but my god, half of what you can see is utter crap. They should have taken out the peanuts, crisps and chewy bars and thrown in some carrots or a bag of apples, at least.

Agree. Such a shame.

Have you actually seen the range, last I looked , fresh food is healthy !
Why do people need to buy branded foods, why pay more for just different packages, most foods are form the same factory or same field

Fresh meat etc needs keeping in the fridge.
Vegetables will go off.

With the stuff in that trolley, they can remove the contents of the boxes if its not room temp.

Asda sell a bag of carrots for 49p.

Exactly. I think some people don’t realise how lucky they are to be in a position to have fresh food. It shouldn’t be that way but it is.

SO224350 · 11/08/2022 20:40

Apples don't need to be kept in the fridge. Why didn't they put them in the trolley instead of one of the multipacks of crisps ?

Because as good as they are (and their Essentials apples and carrots are Ds core foods) they don’t last as long as the crisps and for many households they can guarantee the crisps will be eaten before they go off but they can’t the apples

Toiletwoes · 11/08/2022 21:19

I think it’s great that they showcased this in this manner. It makes sense that there’s no fresh food as the display may be there for a while.

dementedma · 11/08/2022 21:28

Lots of fresh food is cheaper than processed. I bought a bag of carrots in Asda last week for 29p and made soup with the addition of an onion and a stock cube. Still cheaper than tinned soup

Cheaper when you factor in buying the stock cubes, the energy needed to make it into a soup and then the storage after?
